Tendinopathies are overuse tendon injuries showing load-dependant pain, stiffness, weakness of movement in the affected area, and impairment in the movements. The scientific interest on the role of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) for the management of tendinopathies has been increased due to its anti-inflammatory and lubricative properties.

To collect evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of HA injections in reducing pain in patients affected by tendinopathies.

A scientific literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Medline and PEDro electronic databases. The databases were searched since their inception until July 2021. The search was limited to English language articles. Different combinations of the terms and MeSH terms "tendinopathy", "tendinosis", "tendinitis", "hyaluronic acid", "hyaluronate", "infiltration", "hyaluronic injections", "viscosupplementation" connected with various boolean operators were used for other electronic databases.

One hundred and one records were identified from the selected databases plus three additional papers identified by the authors through other sources. After removing duplicated papers and title/abstract screening, 19 studies were included in our review (eight papers on shoulder, three on elbow, four on hand, one on knee, and three on ankle).

The results showed that none of the studies report severe adverse effects and most of them support the use of HA injections in tendinopathies, with a special attention to pain reduction and functional assessment. Further studies are warranted to better investigate effects and methods of administration of HA in tendinopathies.

Frozen shoulder (FS), also known as shoulder adhesive capsulitis, is a musculoskeletal disorder associated with pain and functional disability. There is a lack of evidence on the optimal treatment strategy for FS.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation of glenohumeral joint combined with acupotomy for treatment of FS.

In this prospective randomized, double-blind, controlled study, 63 FS patients were recruited, and equally allocated to treatment group and control group. The treatment group was treated with ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation of glenohumeral joint combined with acupotomy, while the control group was only treated with ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation of glenohumeral joint. The pain and mobility of shoulder, overall efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated 3 months after treatment.

At baseline, no significant difference in all characteristic value was found between the treatment group (n= 33) and control group (n= 30). Thined with acupotomy may benefit for FS patients.

To investigate changes in rib cage deviation in the postoperative period after adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) surgery.

Forty-four patients with AIS with a main right thoracic curvature underwent posterior surgical fusion (PSF), and radiological parameters of the spine and thorax were evaluated.

The correction rates of main thoracic curve (MT)-Cobb angle at immediate after surgery and postoperative follow-up (2 years) were 64% and 66%, respectively. At these two postoperative time points, the correction rates of height of thoracic vertebrae 1 to 12 (T1T12) were 10% and 12%; the correction rates of Rib-vertebra angle difference (RVAD) were 59% and 52%; the correction rates of Apical rib hump prominence (RH) were 58% and 76%; while the correction rates of Apical vertebral body-rib ratio (AVB-R) were 23% and 25%, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that all these radiological parameters at the two postoperative time points were significantly different from the preoperative values (p< 0.001). There were significant correlations between MT-Cobb angle and T1-T12 height (p< 0.001), RVAD (p< 0.001), RH (p< 0.001), and AVB-R (p< 0.001).

Myofascial pain is a common, but poorly understood multifactorial condition.

This study analyzed how the degree of central sensitization (nociplastic pain) can impact the response to physical therapy for patients with myofascial pain.

This prospective, observational cohort study compared pain phenotyping and functional measures in 30 participants with non-acute neck/shoulder girdle primary myofascial pain following 3-months of physical therapy. The Fibromyalgia Survey Questionnaire Score served as a surrogate of central sensitization.

All participants demonstrated some benefit from physical therapy; however, those with moderate levels of nociceptive pain features were less likely to have clinically significant improvements on the Neck Disability Index, PEG score, or pain catastrophizing measures. Those with higher levels of nociplastic pain had a similar chance of showing improvement as those with lower levels, except regarding catastrophizing. Significant improvements were independent of the type or amount of therapy received.

Patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) mostly suffer from muscle-related pain. Several conservative interventions have been suggested as treatments for TMD in the last years.

The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of rehabilitative approaches in reducing pain in patients with muscle-related TMD.

PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception until April 28th, 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) presenting patients with painful muscle-related TMD; rehabilitative approaches as interventions; placebo or sham treatment as comparisons; pain intensity, using visual analogue scale as outcome. A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the overall effect on painful muscle-related TMD patients. PROSPERO registration number of this systematic review is CRD42021251904.

Out of 1997 papers suitable for title/abstract screening, 189 articles were assessed for eligibility. Research on the multi-faceted characteristics of persistent severe acute lower back pain (LBP) resulting from acute vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) is lacking.

To investigate the psychological and functional status of older patients with persistent severe acute LBP after conservative treatment of VCFs.

This prospective study included women aged 50 years and older who had acute VCFs and were admitted to the hospital. Pain intensity, depression, pain catastrophizing, activities of daily living (ADL), muscle strength, and vertebral deformity were assessed on admission. At 2 and 4 weeks post-admission, physical performance tests were performed along with the above measures.

We divided 131 participants into severe (n= 64) and mild (n= 67) groups according to their pain intensity at 4 weeks. Compared to the mild group, the severe group showed significantly higher levels of depression and catastrophizing, with significantly poorer muscle strength and endurance. There were no significant differences in ADL and vertebral deformities between the two groups.

Our results suggest that older patients with persistent severe acute LBP resulting from VCFs tend to be depressed and pain catastrophizing. Furthermore, persistent severe acute LBP negatively impacts endurance and muscle strength but not ADL.

Vibration training is an adjuvant to muscle-strengthening exercises.

To investigate the short-term effects of direct vibration on the deep trunk muscles of patients with non-specific chronic low back pain (CLBP).

Participants with non-specific CLBP were randomly placed into two groups the vibration-plus stabilization exercise (VSE) group (n= 31) and the conventional stabilization exercise (CSE) group (n= 31). The groups underwent 12 sessions of an exercise program. The thickness and activity of the trunk muscles were measured using ultrasonography and surface electromyography.
