Etlingera elatior, Ocimum xcitriodorum, Kaempferia galanga, and Apium graveolens had the highest lymphocyte cell proliferation stimulation index (SI) at concentrations of 41.67, 16.67, 4.17, and 2.5 mg/mL culture, respectively (SI 2.21 ± 0.05, 2.62 ± 0.12, 3 ± 0.05, and 2.64 ± 0.07, respectively). The NMR spectra of these four most potent plants showed low peaks in the aromatic/phenolic area and several other peaks indicating the presence of terpenoid, steroid, amino acid, and sugar compounds. The results demonstrate the immunomodulatory potential of all vegetables, herbs, and spices, except P. amaryllifolius, although this potential did not necessarily correlate with flavonoid content and antioxidant activity. Amplification of DNA from single nematodes for further molecular analysis can be challenging sometimes. In this research, two whole-genome amplification (WGA) methods were evaluated for their efficiencies in DNA amplification from a single reniform nematode. The WGA was carried out using both REPLI-g Mini and Midi kits, and the GenomePlex single cell whole-genome amplification kit. Sequence analysis produced 4 Mb and 12 Mb of genomic sequences for the reniform nematode using REPLI-g and SIGMA libraries. These sequences were assembled into 28,784 and 24,508 contigs, respectively, for REPLI-g and SIGMA libraries. The highest repeats in both libraries were of low complexity, and the lowest for the REPLI-g library were for satellites and for the SIGMA library, RTE/BOV-B. The same kind of repeats were observed for both libraries; however, the SIGMA library had four other repeat elements (Penelope (long interspersed nucleotide element (LINE)), RTE/BOV-B (LINE), PiggyBac, and Mirage/P-element/Transib), which were not seen in the REPLI-g library. Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) is often used to guide ICS treatment in asthma. This study investigated the change in pulmonary NO dynamics before and after a maximum oxygen uptake (V'O2 max) test. An extended NO analysis was performed among Swedish elite junior cross-country skiers (n=25), with and without declared asthma, before and after a V'O2 max test using roller skis. Asthma was declared by six boys and two girls among whom five occasionally used ICSs. There were no differences in baseline NO parameters between those with and without declared asthma. The median (interquartile range) diffusion capacity over airway wall (D awNO) was 21 (17-25) mL·s-1, which is much increased for this age group. After the V'O2 max test, there were statistically significant differences from the baseline fraction of exhaled NO (F ENO50 ), NO flux from airways, D awNO and alveolar NO values; but not in the NO content in airway wall (C awNO) for all subjects together as one group. However, in the asthma group, differences were only seen in F ENO50 and C awNO. Interestingly, a majority of the subjects had an increase in the D awNO. An increase in D awNO has been found with allergic asthma together with elevated C awNO. The skiers did not have elevated C awNO, which indicates an absence of inflammation in the airway wall. Modelling of lung NO production clearly shows that the asthma among our skiers is distinct from the allergic asthma in nonathletes.

In sarcoidosis, blood monocytes, circulating precursors of granuloma macrophages, display enhanced inflammatory cytokine production, reduced expression of the regulatory (inhibitory) receptor CD200R, and altered subsets defined by CD14 and CD16. Multiparameter flow cytometry was used to perform detailed analyses of cell surface regulatory molecules on freshly isolated blood immune cells from patients with chronic pulmonary sarcoidosis and age-matched healthy controls.

Airflow obstruction is associated with cognitive dysfunction but studies have not assessed how emphysema, a structural phenotype of lung disease, might be associated with cognitive function independent from pulmonary function measured by spirometry. We aimed to determine the relationship between the presence of visually detectable emphysema on chest computed tomography (CT) imaging and cognitive function.

We examined 2491 participants, mean age of 50 years, from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study who were assessed for the presence of emphysema on chest CT imaging and had cognitive function measured 5 years later with a battery of six cognitive tests.

Of those assessed, 172 (7%) had emphysema. After adjusting for age, sex, height, study centre, race, body mass index, education and smoking, visual emphysema was significantly associated with worse performance on most cognitive tests. Compared to those without emphysema, participants with emphysema performed worse on cognitive testing 0.39 sd units lower (95% CI -0.53- -0.25) on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, 0.27 sd units lower (95% CI -0.42- -0.12) on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, 0.29 sd units lower (95% CI -0.43- -0.14) on the Digit Symbol Substitution Test and 0.25 sd units lower (95% CI -0.42- -0.09) on letter fluency.
