Target mimicry prediction between differentially-expressed lncRNAs and miRNAs identified 40 putative target mimics of lncRNAs and 58 target miRNAs. Six differentially-expressed lncRNAs were further validated by qPCR, and one in particular showed consistent differential expression using both techniques. Expression levels of most of the lncRNAs were found to be very low, and this may be the reason for the apparent inconsistency between RNA-seq and qPCR data. CONCLUSIONS The analysis of lncRNAs that are differentially-expressed under low-nitrogen stress, as well as their co-expressed or co-located protein coding genes and target mimics, could elucidate complex and hitherto uncharacterised mechanisms involved in the adaptation to low-nitrogen stress in barley and other crop plants.BACKGROUND To date, the microbiota of the human penis has been studied mostly in connection with circumcision, HIV risk and female partner bacterial vaginosis (BV). These studies have shown that male circumcision reduces penile anaerobic bacteria, that greater abundance of penile anaerobic bacteria is correlated with increased cytokine levels and greater risk of HIV infection, and that the penile microbiota is an important harbour for BV-associated bacteria. While circumcision has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of acquiring human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, the relationship of the penile microbiota with HPV is still unknown. In this study, we examined the penile microbiota of HPV-infected men as well as the impact of HIV status. RESULTS The penile skin microbiota of 238 men from Cape Town (South Africa) were profiled using Illumina sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Corynebacterium and Prevotella were found to be the most abundant genera. Six distinct communitted with greater relative abundances of Staphylococcus and BV-associated bacterial taxa (notably Prevotella, Peptinophilus and Dialister), respectively. It is possible that these taxa could increase susceptibility to HIV and HR-HPV acquisition, in addition to creating conditions in which infections persist. Further longitudinal studies are required to establish causal relationships and to determine the extent of the effect.BACKGROUND Reports of anaesthetic management of paraganglioma resection in patients with isolated L-transposition of the great arteries (L-TGA) are rare. We focus on the preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, and postoperative care of a frail patient with "physiologically corrected" L-TGA for paraganglioma resection. CASE PRESENTATION We performed general anaesthesia for a 46-year-old patient with "physiologically corrected" L-TGA undergoing open large retroperitoneal paraganglioma resection. Although the preoperative medical therapy had attained its goals, the patient went through three periods of severe episodic hypertension and tachycardia as tumour manipulation released catecholamines. Goal-directed fluid therapy based on pulse pressure variation (PPV) and point-of-care transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) imaging enabled anaesthesiologists to make rapid judgments and to regulate blood pressure in a timely manner, thereby reducing the risk of heart failure caused by massive rapid fluid bolus therapy. The patient was transferred to the intensive care unit because of intraoperative hemodynamic changes and significant blood loss. Despite transient myocardial injury (elevated troponin I), no lethal arrhythmia or complications occurred perioperatively, and the patient recovered well and was discharged 1 week later. CONCLUSIONS Goal-directed fluid therapy combined with the adoption of TEE could effectively guide fluid administration, which is helpful for anaesthesia management during operation. We recommend the routine use of TEE in such cases.BACKGROUND Endoscopic balloon dilation and/or plastic stent placement has been a standard method for treating biliary strictures complicated post living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). The strictures may be refractory to endoscopic treatment and require long-term stent placement. However, consensus on the optimal period of the stent indwelling and usefulness of the inside stent does not exist. METHODS We evaluated the long-term efficacy of stent treatment in patients with biliary stricture post LDLT. In addition, we compared the stent patency between inside stent and conventional outside stent. RESULTS A total of 98 ERC sessions (median 6 range 1-14) performed on 16 patients receiving endoscopic treatment for biliary strictures post LDLT with duct-to-duct biliary reconstruction were analyzed. Biliary strictures successfully treated in 14 patients (88%) included 7 patients (44%) showing improvement of biliary strictures with repeated endoscopic stent placement. Stent replacement was carried out every 6 to 12 months for the remainder 7 patients (44%). Biliary stents were placed in 87 sessions (77 inside sessions and 10 outside sessions). Stent migration occurred 13 times (16%) and none of the inside stent sessions and the outside stent sessions, respectively. Median patency of inside stent and outside stent were 222 days (range; 8-1736) and 99 days (range; 7-356), respectively. The stent occlusion was significantly less in inside stent than in outside stent (p less then 0.001). Stone formation was observed in 14 (18%) of the inside stent and 3 (30%) of the outside stent. Biliary stones were small and successfully removed endoscopically. CONCLUSIONS The endoscopic treatment using inside stent was useful in the management of biliary strictures after LDLT.BACKGROUND Circular bacteriocins are antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria with a N and C termini ligation. They have desirable properties such as activity at low concentrations along with thermal, pH and proteolytic resistance. There are twenty experimentally confirmed circular bacteriocins as part of bacteriocin gene clusters, with transport, membrane and immunity proteins. Traditionally, novel antimicrobials are found by testing large numbers of isolates against indicator strains, with no promise of corresponding novel sequence. RESULTS Through bioprospecting publicly available sequence databases, we identified ninety-nine circular bacteriocins across a variety of bacteria bringing the total to 119. They were grouped into two families within class I modified bacteriocins (i and ii) and further divided into subfamilies based on similarity to experimentally confirmed circular bacteriocins. EGFR inhibitor Within subfamilies, sequences overwhelmingly shared similar characteristics such as sequence length, presence of a polybasic region, conserved locations of aromatic residues, C and N termini, gene clusters similarity, translational coupling and hydrophobicity profiles.
