Following a first wave in spring and gradual easing of lockdown, Luxembourg experienced an early second epidemic wave of SARS-CoV-2 before the start of summer school holidays on 15th July. This provided the opportunity to investigate the role of school-age children and school settings for transmission.
We compared the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 in school-age children, teachers and the general working population in Luxembourg during two epidemic waves a spring wave from March-April 2020 corresponding to general lockdown with schools being closed and May-July 2020 corresponding to schools being open. We assessed the number of secondary transmissions occurring in schools between May and July 2020 using routine contact tracing data.
During the first wave in March-April 2020 when schools were closed, the incidence in pupils peaked at 28 per 100,000, while during the second wave in May-July 2020 when schools were open, incidence peaked 100 per 100,000. While incidence of SARS-CoV-2 was higher in adults than in cell as easy access to testing, systematic contact tracing appears to have been successful in mitigating transmission within educational settings.
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G may have an important role in the natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Our aim was to evaluate the role of HLA-G in the outcome of genital and oral HPV infections in women.
Analyses included 306 women from the Finnish Family HPV-study and were followed-up for six years. Genital and oral samples were tested for 24 different HPV types with multiplex HPV genotyping. HLA-G alleles were determined through direct DNA-sequencing. Unconditional logistic regression was used to determine the associations between HLA-G genotypes and HPV infection outcomes.
Ten HLA-G alleles were identified. Most common HLA-G genotypes were the wild type G*010101/010101 (31.3%) followed by G*010101/010102 (26.8%). G*010101/010101 genotype was associated with increased risk of oral HPV infections by any HPV type or single-type with OR = 1.86 (95% CI 1.14-3.04, P = 0.01) and 2.22 (95% CI 1.14-3.71, P = 0.02), respectively. G*0401+ allele and the G*010101/010401 genotype both protected from any and single oral HPV infections; OR = 0.46 (95% CI 0.23-0.89, P = 0.02) and 0.53 (95% CI 0.23-0.97, P = 0.03), respectively. G*010102/010401 genotype increased significantly the risk of infertility and its treatments, with respective OR = 5.06 (95% CI 1.22-21.02, P = 0.03) and OR = 9.07 (95% CI 1.22-39.50, P = 0.03). Omaveloxolone in vitro Both HLA-G alleles and genotypes showed several significant associations with the outcomes of oral HPV infections, but none of them had any impact on the outcomes of genital HPV infections in these women.
The host HLA-G genotypes appear to impact the outcomes of oral HPV infections in women but have little if any effect on genital HPV status or infection outcomes.

The Hawthorne Effect is the change in behaviour by subjects due to their awareness of being observed and is evident in both research and clinical settings as a result of various forms of observation. When the Hawthorne effect exists, it is short-lived, and likely leads to increased productivity, compliance, or adherence to standard protocols. This study is a qualitative component of an ongoing multicentre study, examining the role of Incisional Negative Pressure Wound Therapy after vascular surgery (INVIPS Trial). Here we examine the factors that influence hygiene and the role of the Hawthorne effect on the adherence of healthcare professionals to standard hygiene precautions.
This is a qualitative interview study, investigating how healthcare professionals perceive the observation regarding hygiene routines and their compliance with them. Seven semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted, each interview included a different staff category and one individual interview with a nurse from the Deparvironment, influence the adherence of healthcare professionals to standard precautions to a considerable extent of which many factors could be mediated by a Hawthorne effect. It is important that managers within the healthcare system put into place an improved and sustainable hygiene care to reduce the rate of surgical site infections after vascular surgery.
The results of this study indicate that the themes identified, encompassing communication, behaviour, rules and routines, and work environment, influence the adherence of healthcare professionals to standard precautions to a considerable extent of which many factors could be mediated by a Hawthorne effect. It is important that managers within the healthcare system put into place an improved and sustainable hygiene care to reduce the rate of surgical site infections after vascular surgery.
The development of direct-acting antivirals (DAA) for HCV has revolutionized the treatment of HCV, including its treatment in patients with HIV coinfection. The aim of this study was to compare the changes in liver function between coinfected and monoinfected patients with cirrhosis who achieved HCV eradication by DAA.
Patients with pre-treatment diagnosis of HCV liver cirrhosis, consecutively enrolled in the multicenter PITER cohort, who achieved a sustained virological response 12 weeks after treatment cessation (SVR12) were analysed. Changes in Child-Pugh (C-P) class and the occurrence of a decompensating event was prospectively evaluated after the end of DAA treatment. Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate factors independently associated with changes in liver function following viral eradication.
We evaluated 1350 patients, of whom 1242 HCV monoinfected (median follow-up 24.7, range 6.8-47.5 months after viral eradication) and 108 (8%) HCV/HIV coinfected (median follow-up 27.1, range 6.0-44. and in 53 of 1109 (4.8%) monoinfected patients (p =0.83).
Improvement of liver function was observed following HCV eradication in the majority of patients with cirrhosis; however viral eradication did not always mean cure of liver disease in both monoinfected and coinfected patients with advanced liver disease.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is the most common cause of acquired heart disease among children in developed countries, in which the resulting coronary artery (CA) abnormalities cause myocardial ischemia, infarction, and death. Prompt diagnosis was essential, and supplemental information should be used to assist the diagnosis when classical clinical criteria are incomplete. The elevated levels of serum transaminases in most KD patients are mild. Herein, a case of atypical KD child with severely elevated transaminase was reported.
A child with clinical manifestations of fever, high C-reactive protein (CRP) and severely elevated transaminases was reported. The treatment effect of antibiotic and liver-protecting drugs was not satisfactory. A bilateral diffuse dilation of the CA was detected on echocardiography on day 5 of the illness; thus, atypical KD was diagnosed. Elevated transaminases declined rapidly to normal after the treatment of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). A 1-month follow-up revealed that CA returned to normal, and 2-month, 6-months, and 1-year follow-up revealed the child was in good general health.
This case highlighted that atypical KD clinical symptoms were diverse, and severely elevated transaminases might provide a clue to healthcare providers for the diagnosis and management of atypical KD.

Reactivation of human cytomegalovirus (CMV) occurs in non-immunocompromised patients with or without specific organ involvement, but it is still unknown whether it has a clinical implication on long-term prognosis or not.
A retrospective cohort study evaluating non-immunocompromised adult patients with CMV reactivation was conducted during the period between January 2010 and February 2018. Patients were divided into ganciclovir-treated and non-treated groups. Patients who died within 30 days from CMV reactivation were excluded as they died from complex causes of conditions. Survivors were followed for 30-months to evaluate long-term prognosis.
A total of 136 patients with CMV reactivation was included, consisting of 66 ganciclovir-treated (48.5%) and 70 non-treated (51.5%) patients. Overall, patients were old-aged (median 70 years old) and most were treated with pneumonia of any cause (91.2%). More patients in ganciclovir-treated group were treated at intensive care unit (43.9% vs 24.3%, respectively) asuspected.
Many older adults prefer to live alone in their own homes, with age-related issues in physical movement, regardless of their cultural background. Importantly, however, to identify the features of successfully ageing in place (AIP), and foster independent living among these individuals, this study explored their level of self-confidence to live alone and its related factors.
We conducted a cross-sectional study using secondary data from an earlier study with older adults living alone in South Korea recruited by convenience sampling methods (N = 936, mean age = 77.1 years, 76.1% female). Data regarding the general, health-related, and social characteristics as well as self-confidence to live alone were collected via face-to-face interviews in 2019. Self-confidence to live alone was measured with a numeric rating scale of 0 to 10.
The average self-confidence score to live alone was 6.59. A regression analysis showed that mould exposure at home, depression, emergency department visits, and loneliness hindering to screen the successful AIP of older adults living alone.
Mature microRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in repressing the expression of a wide range of mRNAs. The presence of polymorphic sites in miRNA genes and their corresponding 3'UTR binding sites can disrupt canonical conserved miRNA-mRNA pairings, and thus modify gene expression patterns. However, to date such polymorphic sites in miRNA genes and their association with gene expression phenotypes and complex traits are poorly characterized in pigs.
By analyzing whole-genome sequences from 120 pigs and wild boars from Europe and Asia, we identified 285 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that map to miRNA loci, and 109,724 SNPs that are located in predicted 7mer-m8 miRNA binding sites within porcine 3'UTR. In porcine miRNA genes, SNP density is reduced compared with their flanking non-miRNA regions. By sequencing the genomes of five Duroc boars, we identified 12 miRNA SNPs that were subsequently genotyped in their offspring (N = 345, Lipgen population). Association analyses of miRNA SNPs with 38 lipid-related traits and hepatic and muscle microarray expression phenotypes recorded in the Lipgen population were performed.
