We analyse the paper "The spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Spain Hygiene habits, sociodemographic profile, mobility patterns and comorbidities" authored by Rodríguez-Barranco et al. (2021), published in Environmental Research, vol.192, January 2021. The study was carried out under challenging conditions and provides original data of great value for exploratory purposes. Nevertheless, we found that the authors have not considered the potential effect of the multiple hypothesis testing carried out until obtaining the final model on the increased occurrence of false discoveries by mere chance. After adjusting the results provided in the paper for the effects of multiple testing, we conclude that only one of the five factors cited as statistically significant and relevant in the article, living with someone who has suffered from COVID-19, remained significantly related to the relative prevalence of COVID-19. Therefore, the preeminent role given in the analysed work to walking the dog as one of the main transmission routes of COVID-19 probably does not correspond to an actual effect. Instead, until replicated by other studies, it should be considered a spurious discovery.Dyes molecules are the most common pollutants of wastewater in the environment from the textile industry to numbers of technologies include dyeing, printing, and painting procedures. Among membrane-based separation approaches as established methods in the water treatment industry, polymers attracted massive attention in the production of membranes due to their low cost and high-performance filtration of pollutants. However, hydrophobicity and low speed of filtration along with limited decontamination performance against some of the dyes, demand new approaches and membranes to overcome drawbacks points. Herein, a new design introduced including a support layer made by Poly Vinylidene Fluoride (PVDF)/Graphene Oxide (PGO) composite membrane via immersion precipitation process and a thin layer (≤100 nm) of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) deposited (as an active layer) through a simple vacuum filtration method. It has been observed that the presence of the GO sheets in the PGO composite improved the hydrophilicity of the membrane, water flux (from ~90 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 in pristine PVDF to ~1690 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 in PGO), and anti-fouling property. By deposition of rGO laminate on PGO support, dyes separation as high as ~99% can be achieved for most of the cationic and anionic dyes due to electrostatic adsorption, π-π interactions and molecular sieving. This approach opens new insight on hybrid designs for graphene-polymers based membrane toward efficient and fast removal of pollutants from wastewater.Screening of inhibitors that slow down or suppress amyloid fibrils formation relies on some simple but sensitive spectroscopy techniques. Thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence assay is one of the most common, amyloid specific and sensitive method. However, if an inhibitor is itself fluorescent in the ThT fluorescence range, its screening becomes complicated and require complementary assays. Selleckchem mTOR inhibitor One of such molecules, 6, 7-dihydroxycoumarin (6, 7-DHC, also known as aesculetin, esculetin, and cichorigenin) is fluorescent in the ThT emission range and absorbs in the ThT excitation range. Therefore, it can produce a subtractive effect attributed to primary inner filter effect and/or additive effect due to its self-fluorescence in ThT assay. Our study shows that 6, 7-DHC produces an additive effect in ThT fluorescence, which is minimized at high concentration of ThT and decrease in ThT fluorescence is solely due to its inhibitory effect against HSA fibrillation. These ThT fluorescence-based results are verified through other complementary assays, such as Rayleigh and dynamic light scattering and amyloid-specific Congo red binding assay. Furthermore, hydrophobicity reduction is studied through Nile red (NR) and kinetics through far-UV circular dichroism (far-UV CD) in place of the most commonly employed ThT assay owing to extremely high fluorescence of 6, 7-DHC during initial incubation period.Aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is a relatively rare congenital anomaly of the aortic arch. A 74-year-old woman was referred to our Cardiac Surgery Department for chest pain. Angio-CT scan showed an acute aortic dissection and revealed an ARSA routed behind the trachea. We performed supra-coronary ascending aorta and total arch replacement with Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) technique. The ARSA was then termino-terminal anastomosed to one branch of the Thoraflex arch graft. Postoperative CT-scan indicated a successful reconstruction of the aortic arch, proving the open stent-grafting technique as a useful and effective approach for aortic disease with ARSA.

Methods to assess competency in cardiothoracic training are essential. Here, we report a system that allows us to better assess competency from the perspective of both the trainee and educator. We hypothesized that post-procedural cognitive burden measurement (by the trainee) with immediate feedback (from educator) could aid in identifying barriers to the acquisition of skills and knowledge so that training curricula can be individualized.

The NASA-TLX (National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index), a validated instrument to measure cognitive load, was administered with an online platform following bronchoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for 11 residents. Immediate post-procedure feedback and standardized debriefing occurred for each procedure.

Mean NASA-TLX scores were highest (indicating greater cognitive load) for EGD and VATS (p<0.001). When comparing sub-scale measures, "mental demand" was significantly higher for VATS (p=0for individualized rotation development as a step towards a competency-based curriculum.A male patient in his sixties underwent median sternotomy and thymectomy for thymoma (WHO classification type B1+B3, Masaoka classification stage II). A 10-month follow-up postoperative computed tomography showed a 22-mm nodule in the anterior mediastinal lipid tissue just above the right diaphragm. The patient was followed for 8 years and the nodule's capsule eventually became calcified. Considering the possibility of postoperative recurrence of thymoma, we excised the nodule. The pathological diagnosis was epipericardial fat necrosis. In some cases, fat necrosis is difficult to distinguish from malignancy by imaging only; surgical resection has diagnostic significance and should be considered.
