Stereotactic biopsies of ventricular lesions may be less safe and less accurate than biopsies of superficial lesions. Accordingly, endoscopic biopsies have been increasingly used for these lesions. Except for pineal tumors, the literature lacks clear, reliable comparisons of these two methods. All 1581 adults undergoing brain tumor biopsy from 2007 to 2018 were retrospectively assessed. We selected 119 patients with intraventricular or paraventricular lesions considered suitable for both stereotactic and endoscopic biopsies. A total of 85 stereotactic and 38 endoscopic biopsies were performed. Extra procedures, including endoscopic third ventriculostomy and tumor cyst aspiration, were performed simultaneously in 5 stereotactic and 35 endoscopic cases. In 9 cases (5 stereotactic, 4 endoscopic), the biopsies were nondiagnostic (samples were nondiagnostic or the results differed from those obtained from the resected lesions). Three people died 2 (1 stereotactic, 1 endoscopic) from delayed intraventricular bleeding and 1 (stereotactic) from brain edema. No permanent morbidity occurred. In 6 cases (all stereotactic), additional surgery was required for hydrocephalus within the first month postbiopsy. Rates of nondiagnostic biopsies, serious complications, and additional operations were not significantly different between groups. Mortality was higher after biopsy of lesions involving the ventricles, compared with intracranial lesions in any location (2.4% vs 0.3%, p = 0.016). Rates of nondiagnostic biopsies and complications were similar after endoscopic or stereotactic biopsies. Ventricular area biopsies were associated with higher mortality than biopsies in any brain area.Within the marine sphere, host-associated microbiomes are receiving growing attention as prolific sources of novel biocatalysts. Given the known biocatalytic potential of poriferan microbial inhabitants, this review focuses on enzymes from the sponge microbiome, with special attention on their relevant properties and the wide range of their potential biotechnological applications within various industries. Cultivable bacterial and filamentous fungal isolates account for the majority of the enzymatic sources. Hydrolases, mainly glycoside hydrolases and carboxylesterases, are the predominant reported group of enzymes, with varying degrees of tolerance to alkaline pH and growing salt concentrations being common. Prospective areas for the application of these microbial enzymes include biorefinery, detergent, food and effluent treatment industries. Finally, alternative strategies to identify novel biocatalysts from the sponge microbiome are addressed, with an emphasis on modern -omics-based approaches that are currently available in the enzyme research arena. By providing this current overview of the field, we hope to not only increase the appetite of researchers to instigate forthcoming studies but also to stress how basic and applied research can pave the way for new biocatalysts from these symbiotic microbial communities in a productive fashion. KEY POINTS • The sponge microbiome is a burgeoning source of industrial biocatalysts. • Sponge microbial enzymes have useful habitat-related traits for several industries. • Strategies are provided for the future discovery of microbial enzymes from sponges.Following publication of the original article (Kher et al. 2020), the authors identified following mistake in the author affiliation.Leg ulcers pose a therapeutic challenge due to a chronic healing process. Conservative wound dressings are initially the treatment of choice, but their effectiveness in therapy-refractory wounds is limited. In these cases, multiple mechanical debridement in combination with split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) are a simple and safe treatment option for ulcer coverage. Additional therapy with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) improves the surgical outcome by promoting ulcer granulation, continuous elimination of exsudate and blood as well as increased contact pressure on the skin graft. After transplantation, the split skin graft requires daily wound dressings until it has fully healed after approximately 3 weeks.

Current psychological interventions to enhance management of chronic pain report small to moderate effects. There is a need to explore the experiences and coping of individuals with chronic pain in depth and expand beyond current knowledge paradigms to enhance psychological interventions. The current literature recommends narrative practice as a qualitative approach in a group to facilitate sharing of knowledge on coping with chronic pain. Therefore, we conducted group sessions incorporating narrative practice to explore the experiences of individuals coping with chronic pain.

We explored the experiences of 11 individuals coping with chronic pain from two group sessions that incorporated narrative practice. selleck chemicals Themes emerging from participants' sharing were triangulated from interview transcripts, field notes, and participants' response worksheets. Data analysis adopted thematic analysis and narrative practice approaches.

Themes on coping found include "refocusing," "distraction," "inspiration and perspectthat can inform clinical practice. Narrative practice is indicated as a feasible and acceptable research and clinical approach for individuals with chronic pain.

Local governments are pursuing policies to limit the availability of menthol cigarettes at the point-of-sale. Although African Americans are disproportionately impacted by menthol cigarettes, little is known about African American smokers' perspectives on emerging menthol policy. The purpose of this study was to fill a gap in the literature by exploring African American adult (25+) smoker perspectives on menthol and a local menthol sales restriction.

In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with African American smokers (n = 27) in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area June-September 2017. Interviews explored smoking behaviors, harm perceptions, perspectives of menthol in the community and reactions to local menthol sales restrictions. The framework method guided identification of key themes and synthesis of findings.

Almost all (96%) participants smoked Newport cigarettes. The majority of participants indicated that menthol cigarettes were more harmful than non-menthol cigarettes, citing strength and additives and because they were targeted to African Americans.
