We investigated the anti-stress effect of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) leaf extract (RLE) on restraint-stressed mice and found that RLE alleviated decreases in the number of intestinal goblet cells and amount of hepatic triglycerides. It also decreased the immobility time in the forced-swimming test and activation of microglia in the brain, suggesting that RLE has beneficial effects on stress-induced dysfunctions.High collagenolytic activity has been detected in pathogenic bacteria. Collagenase plays an essential role in the invasion step in animals and humans. In this study, we characterized collagenase found in the nonpathogenic bacterium Lysinibacillus sphaericus VN3, which was isolated from soil in Vietnam. The purified enzyme with a molecular mass of approximately 110 kDa exhibited collagenolytic, gelatinolytic, and caseinolytic activity. For those patients who evolve to heart failure, myocardial regenerative approaches are of particular interest, and a growing body of preclinical studies has been investigating the use of cell therapy for ANT-induced cardiomyopathy (AIC). However, since animal models and modalities of cell therapy are highly heterogeneous between studies, the efficacy of cell therapy for AIC is not clear. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental studies reporting the use of cell therapy with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) or bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNC) in animal models of AIC with regard to global cardiac function. The Medline, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to November 2019. Two reviewers independently extracted data on study quality and the results of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and fractional shortening (FS) obtained by echocardiography. The quality of outcomes was assessed using the Cochrane, Collaborative Approach to Meta-Analysis and Review of Animal Data from Experimental Studies (CAMARADES), and SYRCLE bias risk tools. Pooled random-effects modeling was used to calculate pooled mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Twenty-two studies comprising 381 small animals (rabbits and rodents) were included. A pooled meta-analysis of all treatments showed that cell therapy increased LVEF by 9.87% (95% CI 7.25-12.50, P less then 0.00001) and FS by 7.80% (95% CI 5.68-9.92, P less then 0.00001) in small animals with AIC. Cell therapy with MSC/BMMNC is effective to mitigate the deleterious effects of ANT on cardiac function in preclinical models. Nevertheless, due to the small number of studies and considerable heterogeneity, future translational studies must be designed to diminish between-study discrepancies and increase similarity to the clinical landscape.

Guided bone regeneration (GBR), commonly used in oral and maxillofacial dental surgery, may show promise for orthopedic applications in repair of cortical bone defects. However, a limitation in the use of GBR for cortical bone defects is the lack of an ideal scaffold that provides sufficient mechanical support to bridge the cortical bone with minimal interference in the repair process. We have developed a new collagen membrane, CelGro™, for use in GBR. We report the material characterization of CelGro and evaluate the performance of CelGro in translational preclinical and clinical studies. The results show CelGro has a bilayer structure of different fiber alignment and is composed almost exclusively of type I collagen. CelGro was found to be completely acellular and free from xenoantigen, α-gal (galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose). Medical students at a large GP surgery in Corby designed, implemented and led a social prescribing service for the practice's patients. Through the project students gained an understanding of social prescribing in an authentic setting. Methods During a 12 week GP placement students collated information on local organisations, charities and schemes into a social prescribing directory. A clinic was set up and a social prescribing protocol created to enable suitable patients to be referred to the service. Students educated staff and collected feedback on how the service should run. Patients referred to the service were seen by medical students, who identified suitable social prescribing opportunities. Follow up was arranged to encourage patient engagement with services. The student-led service has been successfully integrated with the work of the new PCN link worker. Outcome Medical students were able successfully identify social prescribing opportunities for patients referred to them in primary care.
