Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) pathophysiology is a complex, multistage process, usually diagnosed at advanced stages after significant anatomical and hemodynamic changes in the valve. Early detection of disease progression is thus pivotal in the development of prevention and mitigation strategies. In this study, we developed a diet-based, non-genetically modified mouse model for early CAVD progression, and explored the utility of two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) microscopy for early detection of CAVD progression. TPEF imaging provides label-free, non-invasive, quantitative metrics with the potential to correlate with multiple stages of CAVD pathophysiology including calcium deposition, collagen remodeling and osteogenic differentiation.

Prediction of patient outcome in medical intensive care units (ICU) may help for development and investigation of early interventional strategies. Several ICU scoring systems have been developed and are used to predict clinical outcome of ICU patients. These scores are calculated from clinical physiological and biochemical characteristics of patients. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a correlate of cardiac autonomic regulation and has been evident as a marker of poor clinical prognosis. HRV can be measured from the electrocardiogram non-invasively and monitored in real time. HRV has been identified as a promising 'electronic biomarker' of disease severity. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a subset of critically ill patients admitted to ICU, with significant morbidity and mortality, and often difficult to predict outcomes. Changes of HRV for brain injured patients have been reported in several studies. This study aimed to utilize the continuous HRV collection from admission across the first 24h in the ICU in severe TBI patients to develop a patient outcome prediction system.

A feature extraction strategy was applied to measure the HRV fluctuation during time. A prediction model was developed based on HRV measures witha genetic algorithm for feature selection. The result (AUC 0.77) was compared with earlier reported scoring systems (highest AUC 0.76), encouraging further development and practical application.

In this study, we identified a novel long sterile lemma (lsl2) mutant from an EMS population. First, we mapped the lsl2 gene between the markers Indel7-22 and Indel7-27, which encompasses a 25-kb region. The rice genome annotation indicated the presence of four candidate genes in this region. Through gene prediction and cDNA sequencing, we confirmed that the target gene in the lsl2 mutant is allelic to LONG STERILE LEMMA1 (G1)/ELONGATED EMPTY GLUME (ELE), hereafter referred to as lsl2. Further analysis of the lsl2 and LSL2 proteins showed a one-amino-acid change, namely, the mutation of serine (Ser) 79 to proline (Pro) in lsl2 compared with LSL2, and this mutation might change the function of the protein. Knockout experiments showed that the lsl2 gene is responsible for the long sterile lemma phenotype. The lsl2 gene might reduce the damage induced by spike germination by decreasing the seed germination rate, but other agronomic traits of rice were not changed in the lsl2 mutant. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the lsl2 gene will have specific application prospects in future rice breeding.

Various techniques in assisted reproductive technology (ART) have been developed as solutions for specific infertility problems. It is important to gain consensual conclusions on the actual risks of neurodevelopmental disorders among children who are born from ART. This study aimed to quantify the relative risks of cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and behavioral problems in children from different ART methods by using systematic review and meta-analysis. Healthcare providers could use the results of this study to suggest the suitable ART technique and plan optimum postnatal care.

Pubmed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases were used to search for studies up to January 2020. Of the 181 screened full manuscripts, 17 studies (9.39%) fulfilled the selection criteria. Based on the Newcastle-Ottawa scale ratings, 7 studies were excluded, resulting in 10 studies that were eventually included in the meta-analyses. Mantel-Haenszel risk ratio model was used in the meta-analy cerebral palsy. ICSI treatment causes higher risk of intellectual disability and ASD.
