This scoping review examines the available evidence on the effect of unilateral cochlear implantation (CI) in adults with postlingual bilateral hearing loss on societal-related outcomes in terms of work, autonomy and participation.

Five databases were searched (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO and Cochrane Library). Publications were screened in three steps on inclusion criteria. ATGL is considered the central rate-limiting enzyme in the mobilization of fatty acids in mammals. Currently, severe fat accumulation has been commonly detected in farmed fish globally. However, the ATGL-mediated lipolysis and the potential synergy among ATGL, HSL, and autophagy, which is another way for lipid breakdown, have not been intensively understood in fish. In the present study, we added Atglistatin as an ATGL-specific inhibitor into the zebrafish diet and fed to the fish for 5 weeks. The results showed that the Atglistatin-treated fish exhibited severe fat deposition, reduced oxygen consumption, and fatty acid β-oxidation, accompanied with increased oxidative stress and inflammation. Furthermore, the Atglistatin-treated fish elevated total and phosphorylation protein expressions of HSL. However, the free fatty acids and lipase activities in organs were still systemically reduced in the Atglistatin-treated fish, and the autophagy marker LC3 was also decreased in the liver. On the other hand, glycogenolysis was stimulated but blood glucose was higher in the Atglistatin-treated fish. The transcriptomic analysis also provided the hint that the protein turnover efficiency in Atglistatin-treated fish was likely to be accelerated, but the protein content in whole fish was not affected. Taken together, ATGL plays crucial roles in energy homeostasis such that its inhibition causes loss of lipid-sourced energy production, which cannot be compensated by activation of HSL, autophagy, and utilization of other nutrients.

To investigate the predictive value of carotid artery calcifications (CACs) seen on dental imaging for future adverse events related to cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases.

Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS and Cochrane) and selected grey literature were searched. Outcomes included stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA), myocardial infarction (MI), angina, heart failure, future interventional revascularization procedures and death. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.

5 studies were selected from 1011 records. All were of moderate to low risk of bias. Results were heterogeneous but showed that patients with CACs on panoramic radiographs (PANs) were more likely to experience strokes, TIA, MI and future revascularization procedures compared to control groups. The differences between groups were not all found to be statistically significant. Bilateral vessel-outlining CACs were an independent risk marker for future vascular events. Patients who are not currently being managed for cardiovascular risk factors should be referred for further evaluation. Those already being treated for atherosclerosis may not benefit from additional investigations.

The evidence for the predictive value of CACs on PANs for adverse future vascular events is equivocal but can help to identify at-risk patients who require further evaluation.

Carbonyls and oxidative stresses, which are intricately linked to one another, predominantly drive such modifications. Oxidative stress leads to the loss of glutathione (GSH) and ascorbate degradation; this in turn leads to the formation of highly reactive dicarbonyl compounds that react with proteins to form advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The formation of AGEs leads to the crosslinking and aggregation of proteins contributing to lens aging and cataract formation. To inhibit AGE formation, we developed a disulfide compound linking GSH diester and mercaptoethylguanidine, and we named it carboxitin. Bovine lens organ cultured with carboxitin showed higher levels of GSH and mercaptoethylguanidine in the lens nucleus. Carboxitin inhibited erythrulose-mediated mouse lens protein crosslinking, AGE formation and the formation of 3-deoxythreosone, a major ascorbate-derived AGE precursor in the human lens. Carboxitin inhibited the glycation-mediated increase in stiffness in organ-cultured mouse lenses measured using compressive mechanical strain. Delivery of carboxitin into the lens increases GSH levels, traps dicarbonyl compounds and inhibits AGE formation. These properties of carboxitin could be exploited to develop a therapy against the formation of AGEs and the increase in stiffness that causes presbyopia in aging lenses.
