BACKGROUND Cosmeceuticals are commonly used in skincare regimens to maintain healthy skin and improve visible signs of aging. In recent years, South Korean skincare has gained prominence in the global beauty industry by introducing innovative cosmeceutical products and aesthetic trends. OBJECTIVES To describe the global impact of Korean skincare and to review the current research evidence for bioactive ingredients commonly found in Korean cosmeceuticals. METHODS A review of the biomedical literature was conducted using PubMed to identify laboratory, animal, and clinical studies that evaluated the biological properties and potential dermatologic uses of ingredients found in Korean cosmeceuticals. RESULTS Bioactive ingredients in Korean cosmeceutical products are increasingly undergoing scientific validation and are derived from various sources including animals (eg, bee venom and snail mucin), plants (eg, dragon's blood and tiger grass extract), and biotechnology (eg, synthetic snake venom). Their bioactive components and pharmacologic activities have been shown to provide dermatologic benefits with potential applications for skin rejuvenation, photoprotection, wound healing, and more. CONCLUSION Further research studies are warranted to elucidate any biological or therapeutic mechanisms of action of these ingredients, which may translate into clinical practice. With the rising public awareness and interest in Korean cosmeceuticals, patients may seek advice from dermatologists about how to incorporate these bioactive ingredients into their skincare regimens to improve skin health and aesthetics. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.AIMS To characterize the prevalence and clinical relevance of malnutrition in patients undergoing transcatheter tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair (TTVR). METHODS AND RESULTS Overall, 86 consecutive patients (mean age 78 ± 7 years) with moderate-to-severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) at prohibitive surgical risk were analysed. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), quality of life assessment, 6-min walk test distance and laboratory analyses were performed before and 1 month after TTVR. A total of 43 patients (50%) underwent concomitant transcatheter mitral valve repair. According to MNA, 81 patients (94%) were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition before TTVR. Following TTVR, MNA improved in 64 patients (74%). As compared to patients without MNA improvement, patients with increased MNA score had greater reductions in TR [regurgitation volume -17.0 (interquartile range, IQR -25.0; -7.0) mL vs. -26.4 (IQR -40.3; -14.5) mL, P  less then  0.001] and inferior vena cava diameter. selleck products Only patients with increased MNA scoOBJECTIVE To obtain normative ocular data for Japanese quail as they mature from juveniles to adults. ANIMALS STUDIED Twenty-six captive Japanese quail comprising thirteen males and thirteen females, free of ocular disease, were included in the study. PROCEDURES Ophthalmic reference values were measured in both eyes at 1 and 5 months of age. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed, including neuro-ophthalmic reflexes, slit lamp biomicroscopy, phenol red thread test (PRTT), rebound tonometry, fluorescein staining, horizontal corneal diameter measurement, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and ocular ultrasound biometry. Ultrasound biomicroscopy measurements of axial globe length, lens thickness, vitreal chamber length, and pecten length were recorded. The depth of the anterior chamber was calculated by subtracting the lens thickness and vitreous length from the axial globe length. Measures of association and descriptive statistics were analyzed using STATA-14 and STATA-15. RESULTS Juvenile and adult females were heavier than age-matched males. Weight, intraocular pressure, horizontal corneal diameter, axial globe length, and lens thickness measurements increased with age. No statistically significant differences were found in the remainder of measurements among individuals in different sex or age-groups. CONCLUSIONS This work provides reference values and clinical findings that can be used in future research on quail and ocular disease. © 2020 American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.Cervical cancer stem cells (CCSCs) are considered major causes of chemoresistance/radioresistance and metastasis. Although several cell surface antigens have been identified in CCSCs, these markers vary among tumors because of CSC heterogeneity. However, whether these markers specifically distinguish CCSCs with different functions is unclear. Here, we demonstrated that CCSCs exist in two biologically distinct phenotypes characterized by different levels of cytosolic phospholipase A2α (cPLA2α) expression. Overexpression of cPLA2α results in a CD44+ CD24- phenotype associated with mesenchymal traits, including increased invasive and migration abilities, whereas CCSCs with cPLA2α downregulation express CD133 and show quiescent epithelial characteristics. In addition, cPLA2α regulates the reversible transition between mesenchymal and epithelial CCSC states through PKCζ, an atypical protein kinase C, which governs cancer cell state changes and the maintenance of various embryonic stem cell characteristics, further inhibiting β-catenin-E-cadherin interaction in membrane and promoting β-catenin translocation into the nucleus to affect the transcriptional regulation of stemness signals. We propose that reversible transitions between mesenchymal and epithelial CCSC states regulated by cPLA2α are necessary for cervical cancer metastasis and recurrence. Thus, cPLA2α might be an attractive therapeutic target for eradicating different states of CCSCs to eliminate tumors more effectively. ©AlphaMed Press 2020.The reaction of propargylic amines and CO 2 can efficiently reduce the release to carbon dioxide and provide many high value-added chemical products. Nevertheless most of catalysts in such reaction were associated with noble-metal to obtain high yield, and it is necessary and important to seek eco-friendly noble-metal-free MOFs catalysts, but have not been reported so far. Here a giant and lantern-like [Zn 116 ] nanocage in zinc-tetrazole 3D framework [Zn 22 (Trz) 8 (OH) 12 (H 2 O) 9 ·8H 2 O] n Trz = (C 4 N 12 O) 4- ( 1 ) was obtained and structurally characterized, which is consisted of six [Zn 14 O 21 ] clusters and eight [Zn 4 O 4 ] clusters. To our knowledge, this is the highest nuclearity nanocages constructed by Zn-clusters as building blocks to date. Importantly, catalytic investigations reveals that 1 can efficiently and circularly catalyze the cycloaddition of propargylic amines with CO 2 , exclusively affording various 2-oxazolidinones under mild conditions. It is the first eco-friendly noble-metal-free MOFs catalyst for the cyclization of propargylic amines with CO 2 , which opens a wide space in accelerating the chemical conversion of CO 2 .
