There were no significant effects of O3 treatment on VFA production or pH. WS6 Ozone treatment reduced the relative abundance of methanogens, particularly Methanomicrobium. This study demonstrates the potential use of O3 as a method to reduce ruminant enteric methanogenesis. As a leading cause of bacterial-derived gastroenteritis worldwide, Campylobacter jejuni has a significant impact on human health in both the developed and developing worlds. Despite its prevalence as a human pathogen, the source of these infections remains poorly understood due to the mutation frequency of the organism and past limitations of whole genome analysis. Recent advances in both whole genome sequencing and computational methods have allowed for the high-resolution analysis of intraspecies diversity, leading multiple groups to postulate that these approaches may be used to identify the sources of Campylobacter jejuni infection. To address this hypothesis, our group conducted a regionally and temporally restricted sampling of agricultural and environmental Campylobacter sources and compared isolated C. jejuni genomes to those that caused human infections in the same region during the same time period. Through a network analysis comparing genomes from various sources, we found that human C. jejuni isolates clustered with those isolated from cattle and chickens, indicating these as potential sources of human infection in the region.Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein required for various fundamental cellular processes in eukaryotes. Herein, we first report the contribution of the ubiquitin fusion protein Ubi1 (a ubiquitin monomer fused with the ribosome protein L40e, Rpl40e) in the growth and pathogenicity of Cryptococcus neoformans. UBI1 deletion resulted in severe growth restriction of C. neoformans, whose growth rate was positively correlated with UBI1 expression level. The growth defect of the ubi1Δ strain could be closely associated with its morphological abnormalities, such as its reduced ribosome particles. In addition, the ubi1Δ mutant also displayed increased cell ploidy, cell cycle arrest, and decreased intracellular survival inside macrophages. All these phenotypes were reversed by the reconstitution of the full-length UBI1 gene or RPL40a domain. Mouse survival and fungal burden assays further revealed a severely attenuated pathogenicity for the ubi1Δ mutant, which is probably associated with its reduced stress tolerance and the induction of T-helper 1-type immune response. Taken together, Ubi1 is required for maintaining the vegetative growth, morphological homeostasis, cell cycle progression, and pathogenicity in vivo of C. neoformans. The pleiotropic roles of Ubi1 are dependent on the presence of Rpl40e and associated with its regulation of cryptococcal ribosome biogenesis.Ebola virus (EBOV) has caused several outbreaks as the consequence of spillover events from zoonotic sources and has resulted in huge death tolls. In spite of considerable progress, a thorough know-how regarding EBOV adaptation in various host species and detailed information about the potential reservoirs of EBOV still remains obscure. The present study was executed to examine the patterns of codon usage and its associated influence in the adaptation of EBOV to potential hosts that dwell in Africa, the origin of the viral outbreaks. Correspondence analysis (CA) revealed that the codon usage signature in EBOV is a complex interplay of factors including compositional bias and natural selection, with the latter having a more pronounced impact. Low codon usage bias in EBOV indicates a flexibility of the viruses in adapting to diverse range of hosts with different codon usage architectures. EBOV adaptation in potential hosts, as estimated by codon adaptation index (CAI) and relative codon deoptimization index (RC possible circulation of EBOV in various African mammals.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread across the globe mainly due to long-term anthropogenic sources of pollution. The inherent properties of PAHs such as heterocyclic aromatic ring structures, hydrophobicity, and thermostability have made them recalcitrant and highly persistent in the environment. PAH pollutants have been determined to be highly toxic, mutagenic, carcinogenic, teratogenic, and immunotoxicogenic to various life forms. Therefore, this review discusses the primary sources of PAH emissions, exposure routes, and toxic effects on humans, in particular. This review briefly summarizes the physical and chemical PAH remediation approaches such as membrane filtration, soil washing, adsorption, electrokinetic, thermal, oxidation, and photocatalytic treatments. This review provides a detailed systematic compilation of the eco-friendly biological treatment solutions for remediation of PAHs such as microbial remediation approaches using bacteria, archaea, fungi, algae, and co-cultures. In situ and ex situ biological treatments such as land farming, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, phytoremediation, bioreactor, and vermiremediation approaches are discussed in detail, and a summary of the factors affecting and limiting PAH bioremediation is also discussed. An overview of emerging technologies employing multi-process combinatorial treatment approaches is given, and newer concepts on generation of value-added by-products during PAH remediation are highlighted in this review.Radiation-resistant bacterium Deinococcus geothermalis has a total of 73 insertion sequences (ISs) in genomes, and some of them are actively transposed to other loci with replicative mode due to oxidative stress of hydrogen peroxide treatment. Here, we detected two transposition events in wild-type (WT) strain and LysR family member gene disrupted strain (Δdgeo_2840). Similar to our previous report (Lee et al., 2019), phytoene desaturase (dgeo_0524), a key enzyme of carotenoid biosynthesis, was disrupted by the integration of IS element, thereby detected a single phenotypically non-pigmented colony in each WT and Δdgeo_2840 strain. Two separate types of IS element have been integrated into non-pigmented clones ISDge11 for WT and ISDge6 for Δdgeo_2840 strain. Surprisingly, Δdgeo_2840 mutant strain revealed higher resistance to oxidative stress than WT strain at late exponential growth phase. From the qRT-PCR analysis, OxyR (dgeo_1888) was highly up-regulated to 30-fold by oxidative stress through hydrogen peroxide treatment in both WT and Δdgeo_2840 mutant strains.
