BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have been widely adopted in US hospitals. EHRs have changed workflow and time allocation and have broad impacts on staff. We adapted an existing instrument to measure nurses' perceptions of a newly adopted EHR. METHODS The 11-item survey was administered to approximately 500 registered nurses in a mid-sized regional hospital in western US, with 153 responses received. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) assessed the factor structure and Cronbach's α estimated internal consistency. RESULTS A 3-factor model was retained through the EFA, and items were internally consistent (Cronbach's alpha for each subscale > .80). CONCLUSIONS Survey adaptation was iterative and resulted in a psychometrically sound and thematically relevant measure of nurses' EHR perceptions. Next steps include further psychometric evaluation and testing with additional samples. © Copyright 2020 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of this study was to determine validation of the Iranian version of the Hospital Ethical Climate Survey (HECS). METHODS This is a methodological study with a cross-sectional design that was conducted in 2016. A forward-backward translation method was used to translate the questionnaire from English to Persian and face, content, and construct validity as well as reliability were assessed. RESULTS The factor structure of the HECS through explorative Principal Component Analysis (PCA) confirmed five factors that explained 64.7% of total variance. The overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient was .86 and the Cronbach's alphas for five of the subscales were between .63 and .92. CONCLUSIONS The Iranian version of HECS has adequate validity and reliability for measuring the hospital ethical climate in the Iraniansociety. © Copyright 2020 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The Portuguese instrument for informal caregivers' skills providing care of aged people after a stroke (ECPICID-AVC) evaluates the capacities that informal caregivers must have for supporting aged stroke survivors. The purpose was to adapt and validate the ECPICID-AVC to be used in Brazil. METHODS A methodological study was conducted. RESULTS The terms with the lowest degree of comprehension were adapted. The factor analysis suggested the exclusion of three items and that the remaining be grouped into six domains. The factor loadings varied from 0.525 to 0.924. The internal intra-assessor consistency was satisfactory (ICC = 0.94, CI 95%). Total reliability was considered excellent (Cronbach's alpha = 0.914). CONCLUSIONS The ECPICID-AVC is considered appropriate for using in Brazil. © Copyright 2020 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The Health Risk Screening Tool (HRST) is a 22-item instrument specifically designed to assess the health risk of persons with developmental disabilities. The predictive validity of the HRST was investigated by examining its ability to predict mortality. METHODS The sample consisted of 12,582 people with an intellectual or developmental disability residing in Georgia (U.S.). Data were analyzed using survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier estimate and Cox regression) and a binary logistic regression. RESULTS All models supported the prognostic value of the six-level health risk classification. The Kaplan-Meier procedure showed clear separation among functions. The Cox proportional hazard regression revealed that hazard is inversely related to the health risk level, even after controlling for potential confounding by gender, ethnicity, and race. CONCLUSIONS The HRST can predict mortality. Therefore, it can serve as a basis for establishing healthcare needs and determining nursing care acuity. © Copyright 2020 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although various measure development guidelines exist, practical guidance on how to systematically generate items is nascent. This article provides practical guidance on item generation in measure development and the use of a Table of Specifications (TOS) in this process. METHODS In addition to a review of the literature, the item generation process within an ongoing study to develop a valid and reliable patient-reported measure of compassion is provided. RESULTS Consensus on an initial pool of 109 items and their response scale was achieved with the aid of a TOS. CONCLUSIONS Dynamic, experiential, and relational care constructs such as compassion lie at the heart of nursing. Practical guidance on item generation is needed to allow nurses to identify, measure, and improve compassion in research and practice. © Copyright 2020 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.BACKGROUND Behaviors that undermine a culture of safety pose a serious threat to the overall wellbeing of healthcare workers as well as to patient outcomes. PURPOSE The purpose of this integrative review is to compare reported psychometrics, feasibility, and identify commonalities among available instruments measuring negative behaviors among healthcare professionals. METHODS Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review methods were used to analyze pertinent instruments designed to measure negative behaviors among healthcare professionals. Multiple computerized databases including CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases were searched in the fall of 2017 without date restrictions. RESULTS Violence, incivility, and bullying are the most frequently measured behaviors in healthcare workers, and a robust number of valid and reliable instruments are available. CONCLUSIONS To date a comprehensive review of psychometric properties and feasibility of administration is lacking. This review synthesizes the instruments measuring these behaviors, providing a resource for future research focused on mitigation and intervention strategies. © Copyright 2020 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Instruments developed specifically to measure nurse caring behaviors need to be assessed in different cultural contexts. The purpose was to translate the Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI) into Turkish and evaluate its psychometric properties. METHODS This was a methodological study with 356 nurses and 363 patients. Linguistic, content validity, and construct validity tested for the validity of scale. Internal consistency and test-retest were calculated for reliability of scale. RESULTS Exploratory factor analysis identified 30 items that could be categorized under three factors. N-Acetyl-DL-methionine Cronbach's α for the CBI was .97 for nurses and .99 for patients. CONCLUSIONS The Turkish version of the CBI is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring caring behaviors. © Copyright 2020 Springer Publishing Company, LLC.
