Recently, SDHB-deficient pheochromocytoma has been cultivated in xenografts and has generated cell lines, which can be traced back to a heterozygous SDHB-deficient rat. We propose that a combination of such models can be efficiently and effectively used in both pathophysiological studies and drug-screening projects in order to find novel strategies in PPGL treatment.

To evaluate the long-term outcomes of Class II treatment with the Jasper Jumper appliance and comprehensive orthodontic treatment concerning inclination of the mandibular incisors and gingival recession.

Sixteen patients with Class II malocclusion at a mean age of 12.54y (SD = 1.17) were treated with the Jasper Jumper appliance and comprehensive orthodontic treatment. The mean treatment time was 2.05y (SD = 0.21). Dental records were taken before (T1), after treatment (T2) and 11.90y (SD = 0.48) after debonding (T3). The frequency of gingival recession, clinical crown height and mandibular incisor position were evaluated using intraoral photographs, digital models and lateral cephalograms. Interphase changes were evaluated using dependent t and McNemar's tests. Correlation between clinical crown height and final position of the mandibular incisors was evaluated using Pearson correlation test (P < 0.05).

The frequency of gingival recessions increased over time and was observed in 6 (9.4%), 12 (18.8%) and 24 (37.5%) of the mandibular incisors at T1, T2 and T3, respectively. A significant increase in labial inclination and protrusion of the mandibular incisors was observed between T1 and T2 interval. The clinical crown height significantly increased in the follow-up period (T3-T2) and in the complete observation time (T3-T1). There was no correlation between the amount of labial inclination and protrusion of the mandibular incisors and clinical crown height for all time intervals.

No significant correlation between the amount of labial movement of the mandibular incisor and clinical crown height increase was found.

No significant correlation between the amount of labial movement of the mandibular incisor and clinical crown height increase was found.Ruminants, as well as other livestock, can synthesize vitamin C (VC) in their liver, and therefore, dietary requirements from exogenous supplementation are often ignored. However, metabolic demand may be exceeded, leading to a decreased endogenous synthetic capacity of VC following exposure to stressful conditions. Such conditions include high thermal load, limited water intake (induced by water scarcity), physiological status and infectious diseases. The obvious consequences are decreased performance, susceptibility to infections and increased mortality. This review discusses the potential role of vitamin C in ruminants' stress management and summarizes the in vitro and in vivo research to date. The different administration routes, comparative advantages and supplementation outcomes on growth, production parameters and physiological status were also identified. Also, areas where there was a lack of evidence or controversy, including critical literature research gaps, were identified, while the mechanism of VC's actions on significant outcomes was explained.

To evaluate the application of RNAscope in the clinical diagnostic field compared to the current 'gold standard' methods employed for testing gene expression levels, including immunohistochemistry (IHC), quantitative real time PCR (qPCR), and quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR (qRT-PCR), and to detect genes, including DNA in situ hybridisation (DNA ISH).

This systematic review searched CINAHL, Medline, Embase and Web of Science databases for studies that were conducted after 2012 and that compared RNAscope with one or more of the 'gold standard' techniques in human samples. QUADAS-2 test was used for the evaluation of the articles' risk of bias. The results were reviewed narratively and analysed qualitatively.

A total of 27 articles (all retrospective studies) were obtained and reviewed. The 27 articles showed a range of low to middle risk of bias scores, as assessed by QUADAS-2 test. 26 articles studied RNAscope within cancer samples. RNAscope was compared to different techniques throughout the incn the clinical diagnostic field. RNAscope was found to be a reliable and robust method that could complement gold standard techniques currently used in clinical diagnostics to measure gene expression levels or for gene detection. However, there were not enough data to suggest that RNAscope could stand alone in the clinical diagnostic setting, indicating further prospective studies to validate diagnostic accuracy values, in keeping with relevant regulations, followed by cost evaluation are required.

To elucidate the clinical characteristics of eyes with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Japan.

Retrospective.

We performed a nationwide survey of dry AMD. A questionnaire on dry AMD was sent to 3,801 major hospitals and eye clinics nationwide. Whenever both eyes met the diagnostic criteria, only the eye with more advanced geographic atrophy was included.

In the current survey, 81 patients (81 eyes) with dry AMD were included. Of the 81 patients, 56 (69.1%) were men, and the mean age of the patients was 76.6 ± 8.4 (range, 54-94) years. Twenty-four patients (29.6%) had a history of smoking. The decimal best corrected-visual acuity (BCVA) was equal to or better than 0.7 in 25 eyes (30.9%), but worse than 0.1 in 17 eyes (21.0%). The mean BCVA was 0.62 ± 0.59 in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution. Lesion size (the greatest linear dimension of the largest geographic atrophy) was ≥ 2 disc diameter in 33 eyes (40.7%) and < 1 disc diameter in 21 eyes (25.9%). Soft drusen was observed in 27 eyes (33.3%), and reticular pseudodrusen was observed in 31 eyes (38.3%). Of the 81 patients, the other eye was diagnosed as dry AMD in 26 eyes (32.1%), neovascular AMD in 16 eyes (19.8%), and intermediate AMD in 18 eyes (22.2%).

Dry AMD in the Japanese population has characteristics of male predominance, older age, high prevalence of reticular pseudodrusen, and high bilaterality.

Dry AMD in the Japanese population has characteristics of male predominance, older age, high prevalence of reticular pseudodrusen, and high bilaterality.Septic arthritis (SA) in chickens shows improper response to antibacterial therapy. This study evaluates the effect of prophylactic vitamin C administration on the efficiency of sulfadiazine-trimethoprim (SDT) or florfenicol (FF) in broilers with experimental SA. Broilers (210) were randomly allocated into 7 equal groups (I) negative control (NC) (normal birds); (II) positive control (PC) arthritic birds by injection of Staphylococcus aureus in tibiotarsal joint at the age of 35 days; (III) vehicle control (injected with sterile medium); (IV) arthritic FF-treated (20 mg/kg/day); (V) arthritic vitamin C + FF-treated (as above + vitamin C at 15 g/100L of D.W. from day 25 of age); (VI) arthritic SDT-treated (35 mg/kg/day); (VII) arthritic vitamin C + SDT-treated. Antibacterial therapy started at day 39 of age and lasted for 5 days. Samplings were performed at the age of 44 and 54 days. A long lasting SA with severe fibrinoheterophilic synovitis and reduced body weights developed in PC broilers as compared to NC group (p  less then  0.05). Oxidative stress was present at sampling 1. Arthritis was not reflected in IL-6 levels of synovial fluid of PC group. None of the antibacterials resulted in completely successful treatment. Vitamin C did not appreciably improve lameness and arthritis scores, although it decreased lipid peroxidation and improved weights of FF treated-arthritic birds. For SDT-treated birds, vitamin C only ameliorated histopathological changes. In conclusion, except for improving body weight in FF-treated birds, prophylactic administration of vitamin C is not associated with improvements in clinical outcome of antimicrobial therapy of broilers with SA, although it ameliorates oxidative stress and some histopathological changes.

To examine long-term cognitive effects of chemotherapy and identify predictors among women with breast cancer (WBC).

Sixty-nine WBC scheduled to receive chemotherapy, and 64 matched-controls with no cancer, participated. Objective and subjective cognition, total sleep time, nap time, circadian activity rhythms (CAR), sleep quality, fatigue, and depression were measured pre-chemotherapy (Baseline), end of cycle 4 (Cycle-4), and one-year post-chemotherapy (1-Year).

WBC showed no change in objective cognitive measures from Baseline to Cycle-4 but significantly improved from both time points to 1-Year. Y27632 Matched-controls showed an increase in test performance at all time points. WBC had significantly higher self-reported cognitive dysfunction at Cycle-4 and 1-Year compared to baseline and compared to matched-controls. Worse neuropsychological functioning was predicted by less robust CARs (i.e., inconsistent 24 h pattern), worse sleep quality, longer naps, and worse cognitive complaints. Worse subjective cognict that WBC showed no practice effects may reflect a form of learning deficit. Compared with the matched-controls, WBC reported significant worsened cognitive function. In WBC, worse objective and subjective cognitive functioning were predicted by worse sleep and sleep-related behaviors (naps and CAR). Interventions that target sleep, circadian rhythms, and fatigue may benefit cognitive function in WBC.

Among the various types of progressive fibrosing interstitial lung diseases (PF-ILDs), substantial survival data exist for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) but not for other types. This hinders evidence-based decisions about treatment and management, as well as the economic modelling needed to justify research into new treatments and reimbursement approvals. Given the clinical similarities between IPF and other PF-ILDs, we reasoned that patient survival data from four major IPF trials could be used to estimate long-term survival in other PF-ILDs.

We used propensity score matching to match patients with IPF taking either nintedanib or placebo in the TOMORROW, INPULSIS-1, INPULSIS-2 and INPULSIS-ON trials to patients with PF-ILDs other than IPF in the INBUILD trial. Seven models were fitted to the survival data for the matched patients with IPF, and the three best-fitting models were used to generate informative priors in a Bayesian framework to extrapolate patient survival of the INBUILD population.

A for patients with PF-ILDs other than IPF, and our analysis suggests that nintedanib may prolong their survival. Our Bayesian approach to estimating survival of one disease based on clinical trial data from a similar disease may help inform economic modelling of rare, orphan and newly defined disorders. The seasonal and spatial variation in the phytoplankton community structure and the environmental variables were investigated in December (the dry season) 2016 and July (the rainy season) 2017 in the Jinjiang River Estuary, China. We identified a total of 138 species of phytoplankton, which were mainly Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Cryptophyta in the dry season; however, in the rainy season, only Bacillariophyta were found. In the Jinjiang River Estuary, the species evenness and the biodiversity index were higher in the rainy season and that the species diversity was higher in the dry season. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the dominant species were statistically related to many of the environmental variables, including the water temperature (WT), pH, salinity (Sal), dissolved oxygen (DO), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN). Among the variables, the Sal, DO, TP, and TN had a significant influence on the dominant species distribution, and the WT and pH also affected the dominant species distribution to some extent.
