Lymph node involvement is one of the important prognostic factors of patients with lung adenocarcinoma. In the tumor, node, and metastasis classification, lymph node involvement is categorized only according to the anatomical station and not the involvement pattern. The aim of this study was to investigate which morphological pattern of lymph node involvement affects the prognosis of patients with surgically resected lung adenocarcinoma.

We retrospectively reviewed 168 consecutive patients who underwent surgical resection for primary lung adenocarcinoma with lymph node involvement. The morphological patterns of lymph node involvement (tumor area, number of metastatic lymph nodes, presence of necrosis, and extranodal extension) were histologically examined. The relationships between the patterns of lymph node involvement, clinicopathological features, and survival of patients were analyzed.

Tetraspanin KAI1/CD82, a tumor metastasis suppressor, has emerged as a promising molecular target for the management of metastatic disease. However, the peptide mimicking small extracellular ring domain (EC1) of CD82 has not been fully investigated for the function of inhibiting cell migration in vitro and tumor metastasis in vivo.

Different cancer cells were treated with EC1 mimic peptide in order to detect migration and invasion by the healing assay and transwell. Cell aggregation and adhesion assays were used to investigate the function of homotypic cell-cell aggregation and adhesion to tissue culture plates. Then, we established syngeneic and xenograft animal models to assess the metastasis inhibitory effect of EC1 mimic peptide in vivo.

Human tau is a highly dynamic, multifunctional protein expressed in different isoforms and conformers, known to modulate microtubule turnover. In this study, we investigated the clinical and pathologic characteristics and prognosis of overlapping obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG) and immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) (ORG + IgAN), which is rare in the clinic.

We included 62 cases of ORG + IgAN, 110 cases of ORG without other glomerulopathy (ORG alone) and 124 cases of IgAN without other glomerulopathy (IgAN alone). The clinical, pathologic and prognostic data were collected and compared.

ORG + IgAN patients showed a higher incidence of body mass index (BMI), higher incidence of hyperuricemia, higher incidence of hypertriglyceridemia and higher bloodglucose than the IgAN alone(all P < 0.05). The genus Penicillium has been extensively studied regarding their secondary metabolites and biological applications. However, the photoprotective effects of these metabolites remain underexplored. Herein, the photoprotective potential of Penicillium echinulatum, an Antarctic alga-associated fungus, was assessed by UV absorption, photostability study, and protection from UVA-induced ROS generation assay on human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) and reconstructed human skin (RHS). The photosafety was evaluated by the photoreactivity (OECD TG 495) and phototoxicity assays, performed by 3T3 neutral red uptake (3T3 NRU PT, OECD TG 432) and by the RHS model. Through a bio-guided purification approach, four known alkaloids, (-)-cyclopenin (1), dehydrocyclopeptine (2), viridicatin (3), and viridicatol (4), were isolated. Compounds 3 and 4 presented absorption in UVB and UVA-II regions and were considered photostable after UVA irradiation. Despite compounds 3 and 4 showed phototoxic potential in 3T3 NRU PT, no phototoxicity was observed in the RHS model (reduction of cell viability less then  30%), which indicates their very low acute photoirritation and high photosafety potential in humans.
