Long-term depression (LTD) is a form of physiologic plasticity that is important for reversal learning and may be linked to major depression. Few studies have examined LTP-like plasticity in patients with depression. It is unclear if continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) induced LTD is altered in depression patients.
Here we recruited 29 healthy control subjects and 31 female patients with depression. We performed cTBS protocol on left motor cortex and employed motor evoked potentials (MEPs) response to measure LTD-like plasticity. Peripheral molecules were measured for correlation analyses to cortical plasticity.
Our results revealed persistent LTD-like plasticity deficits in female patients with depression. LTD-like plasticity was impaired in patients with depression despite the fact that peripheral concentrations of BDNF were comparable to that of healthy subjects.
Our findings provide evidence for impaired LTD-like plasticity in patients with depression which may be an important mechanism linked to the pathophysiology and treatment of this disorder.

Respiratorytract infections (RTIs) and interstitial lung disease (ILD) secondary to interleukin (IL) 12/23 or IL-23 antagonists have been reported in autoimmune diseases.
To assess the risk of RTIs and noninfectious ILD with these drugs.
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Risk of RTIs and noninfectious ILD was compared to placebo by Mantel-Haenszel risk difference. Selleckchem Vadimezan We divided RTIs into upper RTIs (URTI), viral URTIs, and lower RTIs (LRTIs) including infectious pneumonia. Noninfectious ILD included ILD, eosinophilic pneumonia, and pneumonitis.
We identified 54 randomized controlled trials including 10,907 patients with 6 IL-12/23 or IL-23 antagonists and 5175 patients with placebo. These drugs significantly increased the risk of RTIs (Mantel-Haenszel risk difference, 0.019; 95% confidence interval, 0.005-0.033; P=.007), which was attributed to URTIs, but not viral URTIs or LRTIs. There was no significant difference in infectious pneumonia and noninfectious ILD between 2 groups.
Because of the rarity of infectious pneumonia and ILD, sensitivity analysis was required.

Population-based studies analyzing hydrochlorothiazide's (HCTZ's) effect on keratinocyte carcinoma, and particularly invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), are lacking.
To characterize the association between HCTZ use and invasive SCC, SCC in situ (SCCis), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
This population-based case-control study included all 6880 patients diagnosed with first-time BCC, SCCis, and invasive SCC between 2003 and 2017 in Iceland and 69,620 population controls. Conditional logistic regression analyses were used to calculate multivariate odds ratios (ORs) for keratinocyte carcinoma associated with HCTZ use.
A cumulative HCTZ dose above 37,500mg was associated with increased risk of invasive SCC (OR, 1.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-2.74). Users of HCTZ also had an increased risk of SCCis (OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.01-1.52) and BCC (OR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.02-1.29).
Limitations include this study's retrospective nature with the resulting inability to adjust for ultraviolet exposure, Fitzpatrick skin type, and comorbidities.

In order to account for the emergence and spread of such phenomenon as an effect of exposition to larvicide and/or adulticide, we develop in this paper a general time-continuous population model with two life phases, subsequently simplified through slow manifold theory. The derived models present density-dependent recruitment and mortality rates in a non-conventional way. We show that in absence of selection, they evolve in compliance with Hardy-Weinberg law; while in presence of selection and in the dominant or codominant cases, convergence to the fittest genotype occurs. The proposed mathematical models should allow for the study of several issues of importance related to the use of insecticides and other adaptive phenomena.Food waste is a global issue with major environmental and socio-economic implications. The problem is even worse in Arab countries where tremendous amounts of food are wasted everyday. In this study, we engaged in an ethnographic journey documenting meal management practices in rural Lebanese households as they relate to food waste. We interviewed 60 women from the Chahhar region (closest communities to the nation's largest landfill) who are in charge of their households' food management. We kept detailed reflexive notes of observations and photo-journaled the provision, preparation, preservation, consumption, and disposal of food. We found that despite the enormity of the food waste crisis in Lebanon, the environmental impact was strikingly absent from the participants' construction of food-related practices. Yet, the women exhibited a strong food waste averse behavior rooted in cultural norms and religious beliefs built on active avoidance of food waste. Our findings shed the light on the intricate connections of family and community routines anchored in frugality and hospitality practices.
