Our study demonstrated that phacoemulsification can increase macular thickness in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients and increase SCP in diabetic patients within 3 months after surgery. Whether these changes persist for a longer period still needs to be investigated.

As with global trends, the prevalence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has increased in recent years in Oman. However, to the best of our knowledge, no local studies have yet been published evaluating the prognosis of DTC cases in Oman. This study aimed to assess disease-free survival (DFS) and prognostic factors related to DTC among Omani patients attending a tertiary care center.

This retrospective, observational cohort study was conducted between January 2006 and May 2016 at the National Diabetes and Endocrine Center in Oman. Data related to DFS and prognostic factors were obtained from the electronic medical records of all ≥ 18-year-old patients diagnosed with DTC during the study period.

A total of 346 DTC cases were identified. Overall, 82.7% of patients were disease-free at their last follow-up appointment. Univariate analysis indicated that various tumor characteristics including histological subtype (i.e., papillary carcinoma, Hurthle cell cancer, and minimally invasive follicular thyroid carcinoma), lymph node status, number of lymph node metastases, distant metastasis status, and TNM status (primary tumor (T), regional lymph node (N), distant metastasis (M) stage) were strong prognostic factors for DFS (

< 0.050). According to multivariate regression analysis, lymph node status, extrathyroidal extension, and angiovascular invasion were independent predictors of DFS (

< 0.050).

The overall prognosis of DTC among Omani patients was excellent. Treatment and follow-up strategies for patients with DTC should be tailored based on the individual's risk factor profile.

We report a case of an Omani newborn who presented with meconium ileus and high suspicion of CF. Thus, full CFTR gene sequencing was performed, which revealed a homozygous unreported C.4242+1G>C novel gene mutation. Both parents were found to be heterozygous for this mutation. This case sheds light on the importance of the extensive genetic testing of typical CF cases in the absence of family history or during neonatal presentations, especially when the sweat test cannot be performed and the diagnosis can be challenging.Pleural effusion is an extremely rare complication in neonates after umbilical venous catheterization that can present with respiratory distress, a neonatal emergency. It needs timely intervention to reduce respiratory distress. We report an interesting and rare case where a term newborn developed right-sided pleural effusion after umbilical venous catheter (UVC) insertion and starting on total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Pleural effusion was confirmed by X-ray and ultrasound and treated with intercostal drainage. The aspirated fluid was TPN, as evidenced by pleural fluid analysis. Pleural effusion resolved after removing the UVC.GABRB3 gene is a recently identified gene located in 15q12 chromosome and encodes for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor subunit beta-3 protein, which is linked to the GABAA receptor. The gene is believed to share a role in inhibitory GABAergic synapses, GABA iron-gated channel function, and possible cellular response to histamine. The β3 subunit is expressed in cerebral grey matter, thalami, hippocampi, and cerebellum, among other structures. Faulty GABRB3 function is linked to several neurological disorders and clinical syndromes. However, the spectrum of such disorders is not yet well known. We present three case reports highlighting the potentially expanding clinical phenotype and variable expression in children with mutated GABRB3 gene. The preservation of marine ecosystems is one of the most severe challenges at present. In particular, oil-water separation from oil spills and oily wastewater is important. For this reason, a low-cost, effective, and sustainable polymeric solution is in high demand. In this work, a controlled-wettability membrane for selective separation of oil-water mixtures and emulsions is developed. The nanofibrous membrane is prepared via a facile and cost-effective electrospinning technique using environmentally sustainable materials, such as recycled polyethylene terephthalate and chitosan. Ginkgolic chemical structure The effect of different concentrations of chitosan on the morphology, chemical composition, mechanical properties, wettability, and separation performance of the membrane is evaluated. The membranes exhibited underoil superhydrophobic and underwater superoleophobic behavior, which is essential to perform the selective separation. In fact, the designed filter has competitive antifouling properties (oil intrusion pressure > 45 kPa) and showed high heavy- and light-oil/water separation efficiencies (>95%) both for emulsions and immiscible mixtures.Mercury ions are highly toxic at trace levels, and its pollution has posed a significant threat to the environment and public health, where current detection methods mainly require laborious operation and expensive instrumentation. Herein, a simple, cost-effective, instrument-free approach for selective detection of Hg2+ based on a hand-drawn paper-based naked-eye colorimetric device is developed. To develop a hand-drawn paper-based device, a crayon is used to build hydrophobic barriers and a paper puncher is applied to obtain patterns as a sensing zone. A green method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is applied using Achillea Wilhelmsii (Aw) extract. The sensing ability of Aw-AgNPs toward Hg2+ is investigated in both solution-phase and paper substrate loaded with Aw-AgNPs using colorimetric methods. For the paper-based sensor, the quantification of the target relies on the visual readout of a color-changed sensing zone modified with Aw-AgNPs. Under optimal conditions, the color of Aw-AgNPs in aqueous solution and on the coated paper substrate can change from brown to colorless upon addition of target, with a detection limit of 28 × 10-9 m and 0.
