Fortschr Röntgenstr 2021; 193 427 - 436.The aim of this systematic review was to analyze and compare the most up-to-date information available on long-term, medium-term, and short-term survival rates of porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs) and investigate the homogeneity in current studies or lack of it. An electronic search was performed using PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EBSCO, Science Direct, Wiley, and Scopus databases. Based on the PRISMA guidelines, the main inclusion criteria consisted of research articles published after the year 2000, in vivo studies with a follow-up period of at least 1 year and reporting of the Kaplan-Meier estimated cumulative survival rates. Quality assessment of the included studies was performed using the modified systematic assessment list consisting of 24 items. Thirty full-text articles were reviewed in detail. A total of 30 articles met the inclusion criteria and were selected for qualitative synthesis. The remaining 27 publications were retained to discuss the heterogeneity in the current literature and reported longevity of veneer restorations. A conclusive estimation of the longevity of PLVS beyond 20 years is lacking. The availability of evidence in the current literature is limited in terms of sample size and duration of follow-up. However, the majority of studies have concluded that PLVs have high-success rates and predictable patient outcomes. The present literature indicates an increased heterogeneity among research study designs. Researchers should aim for homogeneous study designs that can be included in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
To study the effect of using different cement types under pediatric stainless-steel crown (SSC) around mandibular second primary molar using three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis.
A 3D finite element model was built for pediatric mandibular molar by laser scanning of natural extracted tooth. Four types of cement (zinc phosphate, glass ionomer, resin-modified glass ionomer, and resin) of 200 μm layers thickness were tested under a stainless-steel crown of 130-μm thickness. Twelve case studies were reported within this research, as the applied load of 330 N was tested with three angulations vertical, oblique at 45°, and laterally.
Linear static stress analysis was performed. The resultant stresses and deformations' distribution patterns did not change with cement type, while the values were altered. All deformations and stresses were found within the normal range.
Analysis results indicated that using stiffer cement material increases tooth structure stresses and reduces crown body stresses and deformations, while bone was nearly insensitive to cement type.

This study tested the hypothesis that modifying the sequence of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)/ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) irrigation during root canal shaping would improve apical cleanliness in moderately curved canals.
Forty-five root canals were prepared using Protaper Gold with three irrigation protocols. Standard irrigation (SI) used 0.5 mL 3% NaOCl between each instrument, followed by 5 mL 17% EDTA manually agitated for 30 seconds. Reverse irrigation (RI) used 0.5 mL of 17% EDTA between each instrument, then 5 mL of 3% NaOCl, manually agitated for 30 seconds. Reverse irrigation plus (RI+) was similar to RI, except NaOCl (5 mL), used as a final rinse, was allowed to interact for 3 minutes with dentin before manual agitation (30 seconds).Root canal cleanliness was evaluated under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) (Hulsmann score); the chemical composition of dentin after irrigation was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX).
Results were compared using Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA by ranks and Wilcoxon matched paired posthoc tests. A Chi-square test assessed whether the best cleanliness would demonstrate a significant association with one irrigation protocol; odds ratio calculation was performed using score "1" versus score "2 or more" (2+) (
< 0.05).
In the apical region, cleanliness was better in RI+ than SI and both significantly better than RI. Odd ratios indicate that the cleanliness in RI+ was significantly better than RI and SI groups (
< 0.000 and 0.003, respectively). Independently of the irrigation protocol, EDX analyses showed no chemical alteration of root dentin.
Using 17% EDTA during shaping, followed by 3% NaOCl rinse for 3 minutes, improved apical cleanliness without inducing erosion of dentin.

The main aim of this study was to determine the undergraduate dental students' self-reported effectiveness of online classes offered by various dental institutes of Pakistan.
A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey. A pretested and validated questionnaire comprising of 31 questions was circulated among dental students. The study participants were inquired about the perceived level of accessibility of resources and the effectiveness of online teaching. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 24. Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for statistical analysis at
≤0.05.
A total of 1,207 students from all over Pakistan responded. The majority of students was dissatisfied with the institutional learning management system and quality of learning resources available. Students were also dissatisfied with the level of training of teachers for online lectures. The worst rating was reported for questions related to the effectiveness of online classes (average rating 3.83 and 3.781/5). First-year students reported poor interaction with teachers (
< 0.001) and strongly disagreed with the effectiveness of online classes (mean rating 4.14 ± 0.935).
The results from the present survey showed that dental students of Pakistan unanimously voiced dissatisfaction toward various elements of online teaching sessions. Findings from this survey will aid the academic institutes to establish proficient learning platforms focused on improving students` learning experience.

Curcumin promotes oral wound healing; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. We hypothesized that curcumin may regulate gene expression in human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs). This study investigated the effect of curcumin on the expression of wound healing-related genes, collagen type I (COL1), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF)-1, and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), in the
wound healing model of hGFs, as well as the signaling pathway involved in the regulation of these genes by curcumin.
The hGFs were treated with curcumin in the unwounded condition and in the
wound healing model (scratch assay). Gene expression was determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. PD98059 was used to elucidate whether extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK) signaling is involved in the curcumin-regulated gene expression in hGFs. Cell migration was also analyzed by the scratch assay.
Data were analyzed by independent
-test or one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference ( HSD) test.
In unwounded hGFs, curcumin significantly increased KGF-1 and EGFR expressions but not COL1 mRNA expression. Interestingly, curcumin significantly upregulated COL1, KGF-1, and EGFR expressions in the
wound healing model. Furthermore, PD98059 significantly decreased the curcumin-induced COL1 and EGFR expressions, but did not significantly affect KGF-1 upregulation by curcumin. However, hGF migration was not affected by curcumin treatment.
Curcumin induced KGF-1 and EGFR expressions in unwounded hGFs. In the
wound healing model, curcumin upregulated COL1 and EGFR expression via the ERK pathway and increased KGF-1 expression, possibly by an ERK-independent mechanism.

The aim of this study is to verify the influence of three pigment incorporation methods (conventional, mechanical, and industrial) on the sorption and solubility of the MDX4-4210 and A-2186 silicones.
The groups formed were based on the silicones used (A-2186 and MDX4-4210), intrinsic pigments (pink, bronze, and black), and pigment incorporation methods (conventional, mechanical, and industrial). The dimensions of all samples were 45-mm diameter (ø) × 1-mm thickness. Readings were taken initially and after 1,008 hours of aging.
Three-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's test were performed (α = 0.05).
For sorption and solubility, there was no difference between the incorporation methods for the A-2186 silicone, regardless of the pigment used (
> 0.05). For pink MDX4-4210, the industrial and mechanical methods showed higher values of sorption compared with the conventional method (
< 0.05). For bronze MDX4-4210, the industrial method showed a higher sorption value compared with the conventional and mechanical methods (
< 0.05). For black MDX4-4210, there was no difference between incorporation methods based on sorption (
> 0.05). For pink MDX4-4210, the mechanical method showed a higher solubility value compared with the industrial and conventional methods (
< 0.05). For black MDX4-4210 and bronze MDX4-4210, there was no statistically significant difference between incorporation methods based on solubility (p > 0.05).
Based on sorption and solubility, for the A-2186 silicone, the conventional, mechanical, and industrial methods of pigment incorporation were equivalent. For the MDX4-4210 silicone, its results of sorption and solubility were varied, and further studies are recommended.
