Here, we reviewed recent evidence in favor of this assumption and proposed three main principles that govern the relationship between WM resources and template-guided visual search. First, the allocation of resources to an attentional template has an effect on visual search, as it may improve the guidance of visual attention, facilitate target recognition, and/or protect the attentional template against interference. Second, the allocation of the largest amount of resources to a representation in WM is not sufficient to give this representation the status of attentional template and thus, the ability to guide visual search. Third, the representation obtaining the status of attentional template, whether at encoding or during maintenance, receives an amount of WM resources proportional to its relevance for visual search. Thus defined, the resource hypothesis of visual search constitutes a parsimonious and powerful framework, which provides new perspectives on previous debates and complements existing models of template-guided visual search.

To predict successful dusting of kidney stones during retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) using stone density parameters and histograms measured with non-contrast computed tomography imaging.

Medical records of 49 patients who underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery between January 2018 and January 2019 at Kyung Hee University Hospital were reviewed, and the data of 55 stones were evaluated. Patient age, sex, mean stone density, the highest and lowest measured Hounsfield unit (HU), standard deviation and range of the measured HUs, volume of the most measured HU, and success of dusting were evaluated. Histograms of the measured HUs were created and cutoff values for successful dusting were analyzed.

Thirty-two stones were successfully dusted during surgery. Dusted stones had a wider range of HU and higher standard deviation. The volume of the most measured HU was smaller in the dusted stones. Successful dusting could be predicted when the volume of the most measured HU was < 8.9mm

The case of a 49-year-old patient is presented who was diagnosed with a primary UPS in the left gluteus maximus muscle, which was treated with compartmental resection with adjuvant radiotherapy (60 Gy). During tumor follow-up (3 years later) a locoregional metastasis at an unusual location in the quadratus femoris muscle was detected, which was treated by in toto resection with intraoperative radiotherapy (10 Gy). The intra and postoperative outcome was without complications and without neurological deficits. In the last follow-up, 6 months postoperatively, the patient was free of tumors and symptoms.The present study provides a profile of Canadian Indigenous gambling and problem gambling using the 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) (n = 23,952 adults; 1,324 Indigenous) and an online panel survey of 10,199 gamblers (n = 589 Indigenous). The relative popularity of different types of gambling was similar between Indigenous and non-Indigenous samples. However, there was higher Indigenous participation in electronic gambling machines (EGMs), bingo, instant lotteries, overall gambling and a higher rate of problem gambling (2.0% versus 0.5%). Variables predictive of Indigenous problem gambling were EGM participation, gambling fallacies, having a mental or substance use disorder, sports betting, and male gender. Compared to non-Indigenous problem gamblers, Indigenous problem gamblers had higher substance use and lower impulsivity. In general, variables predictive of Indigenous problem gambling were the same ones predictive of problem gambling in all populations, with elevated Indigenous problem gambling rates primarily being due to elevated rates of these generic risk factors. Yet, the influence of such non-language factors as children's age, the severity of autistic traits, and non-verbal IQ on language functioning was studied. Our results indicate a high variability of language skills in children with ASD (from normal to impaired) which is in line with the previous studies. Interestingly, the number of children with normal language abilities was related to the linguistic levels according to more complex morphosyntax and discourse tests, fewer children with ASD were within the normal range unlike the results in simpler phonological and lexical tests. Importantly, we found that language abilities were best predicted by non-verbal IQ but were independent from age and the severity of autistic traits. The findings support the claim that formal language assessment of children with ASD needs to include all linguistic levels, from phonology to discourse, for helping speech-language therapists to choose an appropriate therapy target.Ketamine is a widely used analgesic and anesthetic in obstetrics and pediatrics. Ketamine is known to promote neuronal death and cognitive dysfunction in the brains of humans and animals during development. Monosialotetrahexosyl ganglioside (GM1), a promoter of brain development, exerts neuroprotective effects in many neurological disease models. Here, we investigated the neuroprotective effect of GM1 and its potential underlying mechanism against ketamine-induced apoptosis of rats. Seven-day-old Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into the following four groups (1) group C (control group normal saline was injected intraperitoneally); (2) group K (ketamine); (3) group GM1 (GM1 was given before normal saline injection); and (4) GM1+K group (received GM1 30 min before continuous exposure to ketamine). Each group contained 15 rats, received six doses of ketamine (20 mg/kg), and was injected with saline every 90 min. The Morris water maze (MWM) test, the number of cortical and hippocampal cells, apoptosis, and AKT/GSK3β pathway were analyzed. To determine whether GM1 exerted its effect via the PI3K/AKT/GSK3β pathway, PC12 cells were incubated with LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor. We found that GM1 protected against ketamine-induced apoptosis in the hippocampus and cortex by reducing the expression of Bcl-2 and Caspase-3, and by increasing the expression of Bax. GM1 treatment increased the expression of p-AKT and p-GSK3β. However, the anti-apoptotic effect of GM1 was eliminated after inhibiting the phosphorylation of AKT. We showed that GM1 lessens ketamine-induced apoptosis in the hippocampus and cortex of young rats by regulating the PI3K/AKT/GSK3β pathway. The investigations provided information on the properties of SARS-CoV‑2 and its transmission as a basis for the recommendations on suitable prevention measures. Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is generally associated with a favorable prognosis. However, some patients have fatal disease, with locally infiltrating tumors or progressive distant metastases; yet few studies have investigated the characteristics of the tumor-progressive gene expression profile in advanced PTC. We conducted this study to clarify the gene expression status in advanced PTC and identify candidate molecules for prognostic biomarkers.

We analyzed 740 tumor-progressive gene expression levels from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded blocks of samples from six patients with low-risk PTC and six patients with high-risk PTC, using the nCounter PanCancer Progression panel. Then, we investigated the association between the expression levels of focused genes and pathological factors in PTC patients in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database.

The expression levels of 14 genes in the high-risk PTC specimens were more than two-fold those in the low-risk PTC specimens. In the TCGA database, expression levels of four genes (CCL11, COL6A3, INHBA, and SRPX2) were significantly higher in patients with advanced PTC. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that high SRPX2 expression was an independent prognostic factor.
