To investigate factors that influence the assessment of postoperative pain in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) and the tools available to determine pain intensity.

The search was performed in January 2022 using six databases. Articles focused on paediatric patients with CP; we included instruments for postsurgical pain assessment in this population published in the last 11 years.

Eight of 441 studies were included. Males and females behave differently; their families can be called on to describe their pain responses. Seven instruments for pain assessment were identified the Non-Communicating Children's Pain Checklist and its Postoperative Version; the Paediatric Pain Profile; the revised Face, Legs, Activity, Cry and Consolability (FLACC) pain scale; the Douleur Enfant San Salvador scale; the Pain Indicator for Communicatively Impaired Children; the University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital Pain Scale; and the Individualized Numeric Rating Scale.

The revised FLACC pain scale is suited to postsurgical units because of its ease of use and the fact that parental collaboration is not required. More studies are needed to demonstrate the clinical utility of these scales in postsurgical units and the factors that influence pain assessment.

Families should be asked to collaborate when assessing pain in children and adolescents whenever possible. Larger studies that focus on the factors influencing pain assessment in this population are required.

Natural microbial consortia could efficiently produce 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), a most promising bulk biochemical derived from glycerol that can be used as a monomer in the synthesis of polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT). While natural microbial communities are made up of a diverse range of microbes with frequently unknown functions, the construction of synthetic microbial consortia allows for the creation of more defined systems with lower complexity.

In this study, the synthetic microbial consortia were constructed by combining facultative microbes of Klebsiella pneumoniae DUT2 (KP) and/or Escherichia coli DUT3 (EC) cultures with the strictly anaerobic microbe of Clostridium butyricum DUT1 (CB) cultures under micro-aerobic conditions. This study aims to summarize the evidence from natural and quasi-experiments that evaluated interventions used to prevent or control hypertension.

We searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science for natural and quasi-experiments evaluating interventions used to prevent hypertension, improve blood pressure control or reduce blood pressure levels from January 2008 to November 2018. Descriptions of studies and interventions were systematically summarized, and a meta-analysis was conducted.

Thirty studies were identified, and all used quasi-experimental designs including a difference-in-difference, a pre-post with a control group or a propensity score matching design. Education and counseling on lifestyle modifications such as promoting physical activity (PA), promoting a healthy diet aat used education and counseling strategies; those that used management strategies; those that used combined education, counseling and management strategies and those that used screening and referral strategies were beneficial in preventing, controlling hypertension and reducing blood pressure levels. Many studies have focused on the biological role of CDC20 in cancer development, as alterations of its functionality have been linked to genomic instability and evidence demonstrated that high CDC20 expression levels are associated with poor overall survival in solid cancers. More recently, novel CDC20 functions have been demonstrated or suggested, including the regulation of apoptosis and stemness properties and a correlation with immune cell infiltration. Here, we here summarize and discuss the role of CDC20 inside and outside mitosis, starting from its network of interacting proteins. In the last years, CDC20 has also attracted more interest in the blood cancer field, being overexpressed and showing an association with prognosis both in myeloid and lymphoid malignancies. Preclinical findings showed that selective CDC20 and APC/CCDC20/APC/CCDH1 inhibitors, namely Apcin and proTAME, are effective against lymphoma and multiple myeloma cells, resulting in mitotic arrest and apoptosis and synergizing with clinically-relevant drugs. The evidence and hypothesis presented in this review provide the input for further biological and chemical studies aiming to dissect novel potential CDC20 roles and targeting strategies in hematological malignancies.

This study aimed to evaluate the ability of next-generation sequencing (NGS) to conduct preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) for thalassemia using affected embryos.

This study included data from 36 couples who underwent PGT for thalassemia without probands and relative pedigrees. NGS results were compared with prenatal diagnosis results.

Thirty-six couples (29 α-thalassemia and 7 β-thalassemia) underwent 41 PGT cycles (31 α-thalassemia and 10 β-thalassemia). Analysis using NGS produced conclusive results for all biopsied blastocysts (100%, 217/217). One hundred and sixty (73.7%, 160/217) were unaffected by thalassemia. Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy revealed that 112 (70.0%, 112/160) were euploid. Single blastocysts were transferred into the uteri of 34 women (53 frozen embryo transfer [FET] cycles). Thirty-two cycles resulted in clinical pregnancies, with a clinical pregnancy rate of 60.1% (32/53) per FET cycle. Twenty-two cycles (22 couples) resulted in 23 live births, with a live birth rate of 43.4% (23/53; 3 cycles were ongoing pregnancies). All 25 embryos' prenatal diagnosis results and/or thalassemia gene analyses after delivery were concordant with the NGS-PGT results. Seven embryos (21.9%, 7/32) were miscarried before 12 weeks' gestation, and the abortion villus in four showed a normal karyotype and thalassemia results consistent with the NGS-PGT results. Aborted fetus samples from 3 cycles were not available because the pregnancy lasted less than 5 weeks.

Neuroblastoma is a deadly childhood cancer, and MYCN-amplified neuroblastoma (MNA-NB) patients have the worst prognoses and are therapy-resistant. While retinoic acid (RA) is beneficial for some neuroblastoma patients, the cause of RA resistance is unknown. Thus, there remains a need for new therapies to treat neuroblastoma. Here we explored the possibility of combining a MYCN-specific antigene oligonucleotide BGA002 and RA as therapeutic approach to restore sensitivity to RA in NB.

By molecular and cellular biology techniques, we assessed the combined effect of the two compounds in NB cell lines and in a xenograft mouse model MNA-NB.

We found that MYCN-specific inhibition by BGA002 in combination with RA (BGA002-RA) act synergistically and overcame resistance in NB cell lines. BGA002-RA also reactivated neuron differentiation (or led to apoptosis) and inhibited invasiveness capacity in MNA-NB. Moreover, we found that neuroblastoma had the highest level of mRNA expression of mTOR pathway genes, and thatce in MNA-NB.

Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma is a kind of rare benign pulmonary tumor with potential malignancy. The clinical features, risk factors for prognosis, and optimal treatment have not been identified yet. This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and prognosis of pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma.

We retrospectively performed a review of pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma patients in West China Hospital from 2009 to 2019. The basic characteristics, treatment regimens, operation detail, postoperative variables, and follow-up time were recorded for each case. Differences in features between patients undergoing lobectomy and segmentectomy were compared. We also performed a case review and summarized reported clinical features in former studies.

Altogether 61 pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma patients were retrospectively reviewed. Fifty-six patients were female and 5 were male. The patients' median age was 51 (23-73). Seven (11.48%) patients had smoking history. Twenty tumors were located in the right lung [upper lobe (n = 7), middle (n = 2), and lower (n = 11)] and 41 in the left [upper (n = 12) and lower (n = 29)]. The median tumor size was 2 (0.9-7) cm. Thirty-six (59.02%) patients underwent sublobectomy (segmentectomy or wedge resection) whereas 25 (40.98%) underwent lobectomy. All patients recovered uneventfully, and no perioperative mortality was identified. Sublobectomy showed a trend towards reduced chest tube duration and shorter postoperative hospital stays compared with lobectomy.
