The literature reveals a complete set of applications of the design thinking approach in the different stages of the patient experience throughout the health context; however, the papers identified focus on specific parts of the process, and there is no systemic analysis about the different aspects involved in each stage of the complete experience. This review presents a holistic analysis concerning the application of design thinking to the distinct phases of innovation development in orthopedics, from the identification of the specific initial challenges up to the introduction of technology-based artifacts, such as innovations in the musculoskeletal health market. Systematic description of design thinking application to orthopedics, including concepts, methods, tools, and implementation examples in the most relevant phases of the patient experience-clinical treatment, perioperative care, and rehabilitation.This paper focuses on effective messaging practices identified in data collected after 10 years of implementing a gain-framed messaging campaign encouraging healthier behaviors in middle-aged and older adults. In Study 1, we measured message recall and intended health behaviors in an intercept survey of 733 adults. Binary logistic regression indicated that women were more likely than men to report intent to change behavior. Recalling messages from billboards or fliers was associated with a lower likelihood of intended behavior change, and media type was associated with intended behavior for those who saw the message online (reducing screen time) or on television (increasing physical activity and ceasing smoking). Study 2 focused on adult generational differences in response to the campaign and types of media used to access information. Data from an intercept survey of 604 clients at agencies serving low-income adults were segmented into three age groups under 35, ages 35-54, and ages 55+. Recall and reaction to campaign materials differed by age group, and the influence of life stage factors and health costs varied across age groups. Television and newspapers were most frequently reported by the oldest group, and social media and online news/blogs were most frequently chosen by the youngest group. Campaign response of adults older than age 35 aligned with goals of improving health behaviors. Together, these studies indicate that diffuse messaging strategies may raise overall awareness, and targeted strategies may be more influential in motivating behavior change. Influential factors and media should be differentially leveraged to target different age cohorts of adults.

The purpose of this brief review is to highlight significant recent developments in survivorship research and care of older adults following cancer treatment. The aim is to provide insight into care and support needs of older adults during cancer survivorship as well as directions for future research.

The numbers of older adult cancer survivors are increasing globally. Increased attention to the interaction between age-related and cancer-related concerns before, during, and after cancer treatment is needed to optimize outcomes and quality of life among older adult survivors. Issues of concern to older survivors, and ones associated with quality of life, include physical and cognitive functioning and emotional well-being. Maintaining activities of daily living, given limitations imposed by cancer treatment and other comorbidities, is of primary importance to older survivors. Evidence concerning the influence of income and rurality, experiences in care coordination and accessing services, and effectiveness rventions remains scant for older adults during survivorship. There is a clear need for further research relating to tailored intervention and health care provider knowledge and education. Emerging issues, such as the use of medical assistance in dying, must be considered in this population.In recent years, the distribution of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks has expanded into new territories in many European countries, including Poland, with increased population densities in areas of their regular occurrence. The spread of D. reticulatus enhances the risk of exposure of domestic animals and their owners to tick-borne diseases. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of infection of D. reticulatus ticks feeding on dogs with the pathogens Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The study material comprised 152 D. reticulatus ticks collected from dogs in the northeastern part of Lublin Province (eastern Poland). A ready-made AmpliSens® TBEV, B.burgdorferi sl, A.phagocytophilum, E.chaffeensis/E.muris-FRT PCR kit was used for qualitative detection and differentiation of tick-borne infections. The assessment of the degree of infection of the analyzed ticks with the two pathogens revealed that 9.2% (14/152) of the examined ticks were infected with one of the pathogens. No co-infections with the pathogens were detected in any of the ticks. The highest specific percentage of infections (8.6%, 13/152) was associated with A. phagocytophilum. For this, the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) regions, flanked by partial sequences of the 5.8S and 28S genes, were PCR-amplified, cloned and sequenced. The sequences obtained were aligned with co-specific sequences available in the GenBank database for primer design and phylogenetic studies. Three pairs of primers were chosen to compose the mPCR assay, which was used to verify the frequency of different mites in house dust samples (n = 20) from homes of Salvador, Brazil. Blomia tropicalis was the most frequent, found in 95% of the samples, followed by G. malaysiensis (70%) and D. pteronyssinus (60%). Besides reporting for the first time the occurrence of G. malaysiensis in Brazil, our results confirm the good resolution of the ITS2 region for mite identification. Furthermore, the mPCR assay proved to be a fast and reliable tool for identifying these mites in mixed cultures and could be applied in future epidemiological studies, and for quality control of mite extract production for general use.The intrinsic rate of natural increase of a population (rm) has been in focus as a key parameter in entomology and acarology. It is considered especially important in studies of predators that are potential biological control agents of fast-growing pests such as mites, whiteflies and thrips. Life-table experiments under controlled laboratory conditions are standard procedures to estimate rm. However, such experiments are often time consuming and may critically depend on the precise assessment of the developmental time and the fecundity rate early in the reproductive phase. Using selected studies of predatory mites with suitable life-table data, we investigated whether and how measurements of growth rates can be simplified. We propose a new method for estimating rm from partial life tables, in which the researcher can choose a level of precision based on a stand-in measure of relative error. Based on this choice, the procedure helps the researcher to decide when a life-table experiment can be terminated. Depending on the chosen precision, significant amounts of experimental time can be saved without seriously compromising the reliability of the estimated growth parameter.While gun violence has been declared a public health crisis, there is limited information concerning stakeholders such as parents' perceptions of acceptable procedures to prevent this violence in schools. This study explored 114 parents' degree of acceptance for an assortment of school shooting prevention interventions. Specifically, this study compared security measures, threat assessment, zero tolerance, and an exploratory procedure. While all procedures were deemed acceptable, parents rated the threat assessment as most acceptable, followed closely by security measures, which were significantly more acceptable than the exploratory procedure, and finally the zero tolerance procedures. Discussion is provided on possible factors influencing the acceptance of these procedures.In the United States (US), acceptance of adolescent vaccines, as measured by vaccine uptake in adolescents, is high amongst caregivers. However, this does not routinely extend to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. In the US state of Georgia, HPV vaccine coverage rates remain suboptimal, especially when compared to other adolescent vaccines. Our study aims to identify and examine caregivers' motivators and barriers towards vaccinating their adolescents against HPV. We conducted nine focus groups with caregivers (n = 75) throughout the state. Using MAXQDA for thematic analysis, we identified common motivators and barriers related to adolescent HPV vaccine uptake amongst caregivers. Barriers reported include caregivers' inability to develop a trusting patient-provider relationship and HPV vaccine message framing issues. Motivators reported include caregivers' intrinsic need to protect their adolescents and trust their healthcare provider. Trust in healthcare providers was a key theme identified towards mitigating barriers and reinforcing motivators related to HPV vaccine acceptance and uptake. By improving patient-provider relationships throughout Georgia and streamlining digestible, representative vaccine information sharing across reputable sources, caregivers may become more receptive to vaccinating their adolescents.While bystander intervention programs have been implemented to help prevent sexual violence on campus, little is known about the impact of these programs on faculty members. We examined faculty perspectives and motivations regarding participation in a faculty-focused bystander intervention program. We facilitated three faculty focus groups (N = 10) in 2017 at a southwestern university in the U.S. Faculty were recruited through their voluntary participation in a faculty bystander intervention program. We found that faculty gained a variety of new skills from their participation in this program including new vocabulary to facilitate sensitive conversations, increased awareness regarding best practices for intervention, and practical tools to apply when intervening. Study results also revealed strategies for implementing faculty-focused bystander intervention programs that will increase the likelihood that they will affect changes in bystander behavior at all levels of the university and promote cultures of non-violence at institutions of higher education.
