This is the first integrative in silico analysis of available genome-wide DNA methylation profiles in schizophrenia. This work identified novel candidate genes and pathways for SZ and provides the basis to explore their role in the pathogenesis of SZ in future studies. Background Surgical fixation of tibial plateau fracture in elderly patients with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) provides inferior outcomes compared with younger patients. Primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may be of benefit in elderly patients with a combination of osteoporotic bone and metaphyseal comminution. However, there continues to be conflicting evidence on the use of TKA for primary treatment of tibial plateau fracture. This systematic review was performed to quantify the outcomes and perioperative complication rates of TKA for primary treatment of tibial plateau fracture. Materials and methods A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed databases from inception through March 2018 was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Two reviewers independently screened papers for inclusion and identified studies featuring perioperative complications and outcomes of primary TKA for tibial plateau fracture. Weighted means and standard deviations are presented for each outcome. Results Seven articles (105 patients) were eligible for inclusion. All-cause mortality was 4.75 ± 4.85%. The total complication rate was 15.2 ± 17.3%. Regarding outcomes, Knee Society scores were most commonly reported. The average Knee Society Knee Score was 85.6 ± 5.5, while the average Knee Society Function Score was 64.6 ± 13.7. Average range of motion at final follow-up was 107.5 ± 10.0°. Conclusions Primary TKA for select tibial plateau fractures has acceptable clinical outcomes but does not appear to be superior to ORIF. It may be appropriate to treat certain geriatric patients with TKA to allow for early mobilization and reduce the need for reoperation. Other factors may need to be considered in deciding the optimal treatment. Level of evidence Level III.Background Iliosacral screw fixation is safe and effective but can be complicated by loss of fixation, particularly in patients with osteopenic bone. Sacral morphology dictates where iliosacral screws may be placed when stabilizing pelvic ring injuries. In dysmorphic sacra, the safe osseous corridor of the upper sacral segment (S1) is smaller and lacks a transsacral corridor, increasing the need for fixation in the second sacral segment (S2). Previous evidence suggests that S2 is less dense than S1. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to further evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) of the S1 and S2 iliosacral osseous pathways through morphology stratification into normal and dysmorphic sacra. Materials and methods Pelvic computed tomography scans of 50 consecutive trauma patients, aged 18 to 50 years, from a level 1 trauma center were analyzed prospectively. Five radiographic features (upper sacral segment not recessed in the pelvis, mammillary bodies, acute alar slope, residual S1 disk, and misshapen sacS2 body and achieve fixation in the cortical bone of the ilium and sacrum. Level of evidence Level III.One anastomosis gastric bypass/Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB/MGB) is an emerging bariatric surgery (BS) technique. We evaluated and compared attitudes of bariatric surgeons and dietitians towards the considerations for choosing BS-type ("Decision-making"), the contributing factors to the rise of OAGB/MGB in Israel ("OAGB/MGB-rise") and notions regarding the occurrence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and nutritional deficiencies following OAGB/MGB. Anonymous online surveys were distributed. The participants were asked to rate by a 10-point Likert scale (0 = not at all; 100 = very much/often) their attitudes towards "Decision-making", "OAGB/MGB-rise" and occurrence of GI symptoms and nutritional deficiencies following OAGB/MGB. For "Decision-making" and "OAGB/MGB-rise", items were considered prioritized where ≥ 50% of the group considered them as 'very-important' (rating ≥ 80). Data on age, sex, years-in-practice and main workplace were also collected. A total of 106 professionals participated in the survey (42 surgeons; 64 dietitians). The respective mean age, years-in-practice and sex were 52.3 ± 8.7 vs. 42.3 ± 9.0 years, 21.0 ± 10.8 vs. 15.5 ± 9.2 years and 85.7% vs. 3.1% males. The inter-observer agreement for prioritized items related to "Decision-making" was fair (Kappa = 0.250; P = 0.257) and both groups prioritized patient's BMI, comorbidities and compliance. selleck chemicals llc The inter-observer agreement for prioritized items related to "OAGB/MGB-rise" was moderate (Kappa = 0.550; P = 0.099) and both groups prioritized ease of performance, shorter operation duration and failure of former restrictive BS. Surgeons reported lower occurrence of nutritional deficiencies and GI symptoms as adverse effects of OAGB/MGB (P ≤ 0.033). The study highlights the views of bariatric surgeons and dietitians concerning factors that underpin the rise of OABG/MGB in Israel and possible rates of GI symptoms and nutritional deficiencies associated with this modality. The study evaluated the effect of time of the year in which changes in photoperiod occurs on ostrich semen characteristics and male libido. Semen was collected for 5 days before, on and 5 days after winter solstice (21 June 2016), spring equinox (22 September 2016), summer solstice (21 December 2016) and autumn equinox (20 March 2017) in the southern hemisphere. Semen was collected from 10 South African Black ostrich males (average age ± standard deviation; 4.5 ± 2.27 years) using the dummy female. Semen volume, sperm concentration, total sperm per ejaculate, sperm motility traits, percentage of normal sperm, head and tail abnormalities and percentage of affected sperm in the hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOS) were evaluated. Male libido defined as the willingness of males to mount the dummy female was also recorded. Semen samples collected around summer solstice, spring and autumn equinox were higher in sperm concentration and sperm output compared with winter solstice (P less then 0.05). Study periods did not influence semen volume, sperm motility traits, the percentage of normal sperm, head abnormalities and HOS.
