Purpose A wealth of studies has assessed the diagnostic value of the nonword repetition task (NWRT) for the detection of developmental language disorder (DLD) in the clinical context of speech and language therapy, first in monolingual children and, more recently, in bilingual children. This review article reviews this literature systematically and conducts a meta-analysis on the discriminative power of this type of task in both populations. Method Three databases were used to select articles based on keyword combinations, which were then reviewed for relevance and methodological rigor based on internationally recognized checklists. From an initial pool of 488 studies, 46 studies were selected for inclusion in the systematic review, and 35 of these studies could be included in a meta-analysis. Results Most of the articles report significant discrimination between children with and without DLD in both monolingual and bilingual contexts, and the meta-analysis shows a large mean effect size. Jet fuels contain components that are known to affect central nervous function, yet effects of these fuels on auditory function, specifically auditory processing of sound, are not well understood at this time. Animal studies have demonstrated that exposure to jet fuels prior to noise exposure can exacerbate the noise exposure's effects, and service members exposed to jet fuels are at risk of noise exposure within their work environments. The purpose of this article was to give a brief synopsis of the evidence on the ototoxic effects due to jet fuel exposure to aid audiologists in their decision making when providing care for populations who are occupationally exposed to fuels or while during military service. Conclusions Exposure to jet fuels impacts central nervous function and, in combination with noise exposure, may have detrimental auditory effects that research has yet to fully explain. Additional longitudinal research is needed to explain the relationships, which have clinical implications for service members and others exposed to jet fuels. In the meantime, audiologists can gain useful information by screening for chemical exposures when obtaining patient case histories. If jet fuel exposure is suspected, the Lifetime Exposure to Noise and Solvents Questionnaire can be used to estimate a noise exposure ranking and identify other potentiating agents such as jet fuel and industrial chemicals. Such pH changes along with the ionic interactions bring conformational changes in bovine serum albumin (BSA), leading to the formation of amyloid fibers at 37 °C without external control of pH or addition of electrolyte. The fibrillation of BSA occurs spontaneously with the addition of IL; however, the highest growth rate has been observed in aqueous solution of 10% IL (v/v %) among investigated systems. Thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence emission has been employed to monitor the growth and development of β-sheet content in amyloid fibrils. The structural alterations in BSA have also been investigated using intrinsic fluorescence measurements. Circular dichroism (CD) measurements confirmed the formation of amyloid fibrils. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been explored to establish the morphologies of BSA fibrils at different intervals of time, whereas atomic force microscopy (AFM) has established the helically twisted nature of grown amyloid fibrils. The docking studies have been utilized to understand the insertion of IL ions in different domains of BSA, which along with decreased pH cause the unfolding and growth of BSA into amyloid fibrils. It is expected that the results obtained from this study would help to understand the impact of IL containing [BF4]- anion on protein stability and aggregation along with providing a new platform to control the formation of amyloid fibrils and other biomaterials driven via ionic interactions and alterations in pH.Heat transfer through heterointerfaces is intrinsically hampered by a thermal boundary resistance originating from the discontinuity of the elastic properties. Here, we show that with shrinking dimensions the heat flow from an ultrathin epitaxial film through atomically flat interfaces into a single crystalline substrate is significantly reduced due to violation of Boltzmann equipartition theorem in the angular phonon phase space. For films thinner than the phonons mean free path, we find phonons trapped in the film by total internal reflection, thus suppressing heat transfer. Repopulation of those phonon states, which can escape the film through the interface by transmission and refraction, becomes the bottleneck for cooling. The resulting nonequipartition in the angular phonon phase space slows down the cooling by more than a factor of 2 compared to films governed by phonons diffuse scattering. These allow tailoring of the thermal interface conductance via manipulation of the interface.The prevalence of obesity is increasing and the number of surgeries of obesity-induced diseases and obesity itself is on the rise. Besides the comorbidities of obesity, pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) changes in obese patients make it difficult to control the appropriate dose of anesthetic agents. Factors that affect the pharmacokinetic changes in obese individuals includes increase of adipose tissue, increase of lean body weight, increase of extracellular fluid and increase of cardiac output. These physiologic and body compositional changes affect the changes of PKPD parameters. Increased central volume of distribution and clearance affect the plasma concentration of propofol and remifentanil in obese population. Hemorrhoidal disease remains a common condition that can have a significant effect on a patient's quality of life. Various methods have been introduced over the years; however, their overall success rates remain low. Although the traditional Milligan Morgan technique is effective, the associated pain level prevents it from being an attractive form of treatment. This study was devised to assess the safety and efficacy associated with a novel minimally invasive approach, radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
Forty-two patients underwent RFA at a single center, by 1 of 2 surgeons. This was performed under local anesthetic and sedation. Outcomes including postoperative pain levels, recurrence rates, and patient satisfaction scores were recorded and analyzed using medians and interquartile ranges.
The median postoperative pain score was 2.5/10 (interquartile range [IQR], 0-4.5) and the overall patient satisfaction score was 9/10 (IQR, 6.5-10). Recurrence rates (6-12 months following the procedure) were low at 12% and all patients reported milder symptoms at recurrence. There were no serious adverse complications.

Laparoscopic appendicectomy (LA) has several advantages over conventional open appendicectomy (OA). However, about 5% to 10% of LA patients still need to be converted to open surgery. Identifying risk factors that contribute to conversion to OA allows for early identification of patients who may benefit from primary OA. A retrospective review of medical records was performed among patients with acute or perforated appendicitis who underwent LA between December 2015 and January 2017. With the use of multivariable logistic regression analyses, the predictors of conversion from laparoscopic to OA were investigated.
Out of 120 patients, 33 cases were converted to OA which gives a conversion rate of 27.5%. Among 33 patients who were converted to OA, 27 patients (81.8%) had perforated appendix, while in the LA group, perforated appendix cases consisted of 34.5% (P<0.001). Histopathology of the appendix was the predictor of conversion from LA to OA (adjusted odds ratio, 8.82; 95% confidence interval, 3.13-24.91; P<0.001).
The result from our study shows that the overall conversion rate for the study period was high. Patients with perforated appendicitis had a higher risk of conversion to OA. Therefore, preoperative diagnosis of perforated appendicitis may be paramount in predicting conversion to OA.
