Retinal prostheses hold the potential for artificial vision in blind patients suffering from outer retinal dystrophies. The optimal number, density and coverage of the electrodes that a retinal prosthesis should have to provide adequate artificial vision in daily activities is still an open question and an important design parameter needed to develop better implants.
To address this question, we investigated the interaction between the visual angle, the pixel number and the pixel density without being limited by a small electrode count. We implemented prosthetic vision in a virtual reality environment in order to simulate the real-life experience of using a retinal prosthesis. We designed four different tasks simulating object recognition, word reading, perception of a descending step and crossing a street.
The results of our study showed that in all the tasks the visual angle played the most significant role in improving the performance of the participant.

Rituximab (RTX) is a CD-20-depleting monoclonal antibody which has been used for the treatment of LGI1 encephalitis, however, its efficacy remains controversial. A 54-year-old woman came to our attention due to memory loss and gambling. Brain MRI revealed areas of bilateral hippocampal hyperintensity and LGI1 antibodies were found in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Immunotherapy with steroids was started, followed by intravenous immunoglobulins with partial improvement. The patient developed multiple generalized tonic-clonic seizures. She was then administered intravenous rituximab with significant improvement for both cognitive symptoms and seizure control. We aimed to analyse functional connectivity (FC) of the temporal lobe and related areas in patients with TLE with iPP (iPP-TLE) and without iPP (non-iPP TLE). Twelve patients with iPP-TLE, 13 patients with non-iPP TLE, and 13 healthy controls (HC) underwent resting-state functional MRI (fMRI). Seed-based FC was analysed between the homologous insulae, hippocampi, amygdalae, parahippocampal, superior temporal, and middle temporal gyri. FC was reduced between homologous temporal lobe areas in patients with TLE compared with HCs. Patients with non-iPP TLE displayed decreased FC between the homologous parahippocampal and superior temporal gyri, and patients with iPP-TLE had lower FC between the homologous insulae, parahippocampal and superior temporal gyri compared with HC. Furthermore, patients with iPP-TLE tended to have lower FC between the bilateral insulae when compared with patients with non-iPP TLE. Reduced FC of interhemispheric connections between temporal lobes and related areas might be an adaptive change to protect contralateral areas in seizure propagation. The insula showed decreased FC between two hemispheres in patients with iPP-TLE, assuming a role in ictal scalp propagation pattern changes in TLE.The photoparoxysmal response (PPR) is defined as the occurrence of generalized spike, spike-wave or polyspike-wave discharges consistently elicited by intermittent photic stimulation (IPS). PPR is not well studied in Sub-Saharan African people. We prospectively studied the epidemiological, clinical, and EEG characteristics of PPR among consecutive patients recorded at the clinical neurophysiology unit of Fann University Hospital (Dakar, Senegal). Among 6,808 EEG recordings including 3,065 pathological EEGs, we collected 56 EEGs with PPR (0.8% of all recorded EEGs and 1.8% of anormal EEGs), from 31 women and 25 men (sex ratio 0.8). The mean age was 13.3 years (range 8 months to 59 years). The peak of photosensitivity was found in the range of 6 to 10 years. Of the PPR cases, 12 had clinical manifestations during IPS. Generalized epilepsy was diagnosed in 23 (41%) patients and 18 (32%) had focal epilepsies. The most epileptogenic stimulation frequencies were between 12 and 24 Hz (range 1-28 Hz). PPR were mainly triggered during eye closure (64%), and 41 patients (73% of PPR cases) were classified as Type 4 (Waltz classification).
