BACKGROUND Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Impediment of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation results in a shift toward anaerobic respiration and lactate production. Elevated CNS lactate levels in adults with BD inform the need to evaluate lactate in peripheral samples and early in the course of BD. Furthermore, there exists a recent surge of investigations looking at circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA (ccf-mtDNA) as a potential biomarker as they are released from cells under physiological stress, apoptosis, or bioenergetic compromise. OBJECTIVES To compare lactate and ccf-mtDNA, two different ways in assessing the mitochondrial health and function, in adolescents with BD versus healthy control adolescents (HC). METHODS One-hundred and five adolescents (n = 64 BD, n = 41 HC) were included. Serum lactate level was measured using a commercially available colorimetric kit. Serum ccf-mtDNA concentration was measured using quantitative polymeraropic medications used in the treatment of BD on peripheral lactate and ccf-mtDNA requires further investigation. OBJECTIVES The objectives were to explore the associations between various types of occupational exposures and depression in the French national working population, most of the studies in the literature focussing on a limited number of exposures and on symptom scales. METHODS The study was based on a nationally representative sample of 25 977 employees, 14 682 men and 11 295 women. Depression was measured using the PHQ-9 instrument and algorithm. Occupational exposures included factors related to both the psychosocial and physical work environment. Weighted logistic regression analyses were performed to study the associations between exposures and outcome with adjustment for covariates among men and women separately. RESULTS The prevalence of depression was higher for women than for men (5.70% versus 3.78%). The final models showed that low decision latitude, low reward, bullying, work-family and ethical conflicts for both genders, and high psychological demands, low social support, and long working hours among women were risk factors for depression. No occupational exposure of physical, biomechanical, chemical and biological nature was associated with depression. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the results. CONCLUSIONS Significant associations were found between psychosocial work exposures and depression, and there were some differences in these associations between genders. This study is one of the first to provide a comprehensive overview of occupational exposures in association with depression. More prevention towards the psychosocial work environment is needed to improve mental health of working populations. Understanding what motivates suicidal behavior is critical to effective prevention and clinical intervention. The Inventory of Motivations for Suicide Attempts (IMSA) is a self-report measure developed to assess a wide variety of potential motivations for suicide. The purpose of this study is to examine the measure's psychometric and descriptive properties in two distinct populations 1) adult psychiatric inpatients (n = 59) with recent suicide attempts (median of 3 days prior) and 2) community participants assessed online (n = 222) who had attempted suicide a median of 5 years earlier. Findings were very similar across both samples and consistent with initial research on the IMSA in outpatients and undergraduates who had attempted suicide. First, the individual IMSA scales demonstrated good internal reliability and were well represented by a two factor superordinate structure 1) Internal Motivations and 2) Communication Motivations. Second, in both samples unbearable mental pain and hopelessness were the most common and strongly endorsed motivations, while interpersonal influence was the least endorsed. Finally, motivations were similar in men and women -- a pattern that previous work was not in a position to examine. Taken together with previous work, findings suggest that the nature, structure, and clinical correlates of suicide attempt motivations remain consistent across diverse individuals and situations. The IMSA may serve as a useful tool in both research and clinical contexts to quickly assess individual suicide attempt motivations. For decades, photolysis and photocatalysis have been touted as promising environment-benign and robust technologies to degrade refractory pollutants from water. However, extensive, large-scale engineering applications remain limited now. To facilitate the technology transfer process, earlier reviews have advocated to developing more cost-effective and innocuous materials, maximizing efficiency of photon usage, and optimizing photoreactor systems, mostly from material and reactor improvement perspectives. However, there are also some fundamental yet critical chemistry issues in photo(cata)lysis processes demanding more in-depth understanding and more careful consideration. Hence, this review summarizes some of these challenges. Of them, the first and paramount issue is the interference of coexisting compounds, including dissolved organic matter, anions, cations, and spiked additives. Secondly, considerable concerns are pointed to the formation of undesirable reaction by-products, such as halogenated, nitrogenous, and sulfur-containing compounds, which might increase instead of reduce toxicity of water if inadequate fluence and catalyst/additive are supplied due to time and cost constraints. Lastly, a critical issue lies in the uncertainty of current approaches used for identifying and quantifying radicals, especially when multiple radicals coexist together under changing and interconvertible conditions. The review hence highlights the needs to better understand these fundamental chemistry issues and meanwhile calls for more delicate design of experiments in future studies to overcome these barriers. Following the discovery of a new class of compounds that inhibit the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma translocation 1 (MALT1) protease in a prior study, further chemical investigation of the Dictyosporium digitatum fungus resulted in the identification of 16 additional metabolites, including 12 undescribed compounds (1-12). The constitution and relative configuration of these new molecules were established by comprehensive NMR and HRMS analyses. Their absolute configurations were determined by employing Mosher's ester analysis and TDDFT ECD calculations. Two sesquiterpenes, dictyosporins A (1) and B (2), possess an undescribed eudesmen-type of structural scaffold.
