Flooding of the sewage system is an environmental hazard often caused by illegal connections between drainage and sewage systems. The timely detection of such illicit connections, often done by property owners in an attempt to remove rainwater promptly from their private courtyards, is a complex task due to the high cost of field surveying and limited manpower of environmental law-enforcement authorities. This paper suggests an empirical approach to the identification and characterization of localities with an elevated likelihood of illegal connections between runoff and sewage systems. The proposed approach is implemented in three stages. First, the association between rainfall and the amount of wastewater arriving to sewage treatment facilities from different localities is analyzed. Next, regression residuals are investigated, to identify localities with an especially strong association between the amount of rainfall and sewage surplus. The identified localities are then analyzed, to determine their geographic location, physical and socioeconomic attributes. In the present study, the proposed approach is tested using data for 623 urban and rural localities in Israel. Pimagedine As the study shows, the probability of association between the amount of rainfall and sewage surplus, which we consider as an indicator of pirate connections between drainage and sewage systems, tends to increase as a function of socioeconomic welfare of the local residents, surface slope, and the level of urbanization. The proposed approach can help law-enforcement authorities to focus their efforts on specific locations and to reduce economic and environmental damages associated with illegal connections between drainage and sewage systems.INTRODUCTION Apple vinegar (AV) has been proclaimed to have different health benefits, such as a weight loss, the ability to lower blood glucose levels, and reducing the risk of heart diseases. Studies on animals have demonstrated effects of AV consumption, deepening our knowledge of the beneficial effects and side effects. AIM The aims of this study were to evaluate the evidence of the effect of AV on metabolic parameters and body weight in humans, furthermore, to evaluate the safety and side effects of ingesting AV, and additionally to evaluate the evidence of the effect of AV on metabolic parameters, safety, and side effects of AV from studies performed on animals (mammals). METHODS A systematic literature search was performed. The databases PubMed (MEDLINE), PsycInfo (Ebsco), CINAHL (Ebsco), and Embase (Ovid) were searched for relevant articles. Primary outcomes were glycated hemoglobin, postprandial glucose, and synonyms for blood glucose. Secondary outcomes were waist circumference, visceral fat, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and total cholesterol. Studies performed on humans and animals were included. The included studies performed on humans were quality assessed for risk of bias using a version of the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. RESULTS A total of 487 papers were identified in the literature search. Of these, 13 studies performed on humans and 12 studies performed on animals were included. There may be beneficial health effects from the consumption of AV. The risk of side effects when ingested in recommended quantities and in recommended ways seems inconsiderable. CONCLUSION Due to inadequate research of high quality, the evidence for the health effects of AV is insufficient. Therefore, more large-scale, long-term clinical studies with a low risk of bias are needed before definitive conclusions can be made.PURPOSE The consumption of dietary flavonoids from plant-based foods has been related to the prevention of multiple chronic diseases. However, intake data from adolescents are lacking. We aimed to characterise the intake and major sources of dietary flavonoids among Australian adolescents and investigate changes during adolescence. METHODS The Raine Study Gen 2 participants completed a 212-item food frequency questionnaire at age 14 years and 17 years, with repeated measures for n = 883. Items were assigned a content for six flavonoid subclasses using the Phenol-Explorer database, which were summed for total flavonoid intake. Daily intakes and sources of flavonoids and flavonoid-subclasses were determined, and change assessed between 14 and 17 years, for males and females. RESULTS Major food sources of flavonoids and each subclass were similar at 14 and 17 years, with fruit juice the major contributor to total flavonoid intake at both time points (providing 44% and 38%, respectively). Citrus flavanones (predominantly hesperitin) were the major subclass at 14 years, while tea flavan-3-ols were a major subclass (predominantly procyanidin dimers) at 17 years. The mean intake of total flavonoids at 14 years was 210 ± 133 mg/day, reducing by 5% (10 mg/day) by 17 years. Females consumed a more flavonoid-dense diet compared to males (104.5 ± 71.5 mg/1000 kcal vs 80.4 ± 50.3 mg/1000 kcal per day; p less then 0.001). CONCLUSION This study provides a comprehensive estimation of flavonoid intake and their major food sources in a sample of Australian adolescents, which may be useful in the development of practical dietary recommendations.PURPOSE Endovascular treatment of unruptured intracranial aneurysms with stent-assisted coiling or flow diverter stents requires a prophylactic antiplatelet premedication to avoid thrombo-embolic complications. Guidelines for optimal antiplatelet regimens are poorly defined. The aim of this study is to report our experience using a high dosage antiplatelet premedication regimen for patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms undergoing endovascular treatment by stent-assisted coiling or flow diverter stents. METHODS From a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database, we collected clinical and angiographic data of 400 procedures in 362 patients treated by stent-assisted coiling or flow diverter stents for 419 unruptured intracranial aneurysms. Descriptive and analytic statistics were performed to report morbidity, mortality, and complication rates and to demonstrate associations between variables and outcomes. Logistic multivariable regression was performed to rule out confounding factors between subgroups.
