Glutamine is essential for maintaining the TCA cycle in cancer cells yet they undergo glutamine starvation in the core of tumors. Cancer stem cells (CSCs), responsible for tumor recurrence are often found in the nutrient limiting cores. Our study uncovers the molecular basis and cellular links between glutamine deprivation and stemness in the cancer cells. We showed that glutamine is dispensable for the survival of ovarian and colon cancer cells while it is required for their proliferation. Glutamine starvation leads to the metabolic reprogramming in tumor cells with enhanced glycolysis and unaltered oxidative phosphorylation. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in glutamine limiting condition induces MAPK-ERK1/2 signaling pathway to phosphorylate dynamin-related protein-1(DRP1) at Ser616. Moreover, p-DRP1 promotes mitochondrial fragmentation and enhances numbers of CD44 and CD117/CD45 positive CSCs. Besides the established features of cancer stem cells, glutamine deprivation induces perinuclear localization of fragmented mitochondria and reduction in proliferation rate which are usually observed in CSCs. Treatment with glutaminase inhibitor (L-DON) mimics the effects of glutamine starvation without altering cell survival in in vitro as well as in in vivo model. Interestingly, the combinatorial treatment of L-DON with DRP1 inhibitor (MDiVi-1) reduces the stem cell population in tumor tissue in mouse model. Collectively our data suggest that glutamine deficiency in the core of tumors can increase the cancer stem cell population and the combination therapy with MDiVi-1 and L-DON is a useful approach to reduce CSCs population in tumor.A variety of evidence supports the dominance of the right hemisphere in perceptual and visuo-spatial processing. Hemianopics with both left and right posterior lesions showed a reduced alpha reactivity at the opening of the eyes, suggesting that posterior cortices have a pivotal role in the functionality of alpha oscillations. However, right-lesioned hemianopics showed a greater dysfunction, demonstrated by a reactivity reduction more distributed over the scalp, compared to left-lesioned hemianopics. Moreover, they also revealed impaired reactivity in the theta range. This favors the hypothesis of a specialized role of the right hemisphere in orchestrating oscillatory patterns, both coordinating widespread alpha oscillatory activity and organizing focal processing in the theta range, to support visual processing at the opening of the eyes.
Concomitant use of vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and statins is frequent in cardiovascular patients. However, clinical guidelines on this drug combination are divergent. Therefore, we performed a systematic review to evaluate the effect of statin initiation on coagulation among VKA users.
Following the PRISMA guidelines, we applied two broad search strategies for the drug interaction between VKA and statins in both Embase and Pubmed; 8623 unique hits were obtained. In the final sample, eight studies were included.
The most frequently used VKA in the studies was warfarin, while simvastatin was the most commonly initiated statin. All included studies showed a minor increase in the anticoagulant effect of VKA following statin initiation during VKA treatment. The reported increases in mean international normalized ratio (INR) ranged from 0.15-0.65.
The anticoagulant effect of statin initiation in patients treated with VKA is likely to be of limited clinical relevance but should be evaluated individually.

This study investigated subtypes of peripheral blood lymphocytes and immunoglobulin levels in workers who were occupationally exposed to X-ray radiation at the Department of Radiology. Seventeen radiology workers received low levels of ionizing radiation as the study group and 18 individuals who were not exposed to radiation were included as the control group. The percentage of lymphocyte subtypes (CD4+, CD8+ and CD4+/CD8+) and serum levels of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG and IgM) were measured using peripheral blood samples. Considering all lymphocyte subtypes and serum levels of IgA, IgG and IgM, there was no significant difference between the study and control groups (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in all mentioned parameters regarding gender (P > 0.05). For the length of employment period, there was a significant difference concerning CD4+/CD8+ (P less then 0.05). The findings showed that exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation does not affect the immune system of workers in diagnostic radiology dose level. Because of relatively small samples of workers, it is suggested that these factors be investigated on larger samples of radiology workers.
Small bowel neuroendocrine neoplasms (SB-NEN) are rare cancers, population-based studies are needed to study this rare indolent disease. The aim of this study was to explore trends in epidemiology, treatment and survival outcomes of patients with SB-NEN based on Dutch nationwide data.
Patients with grade 1 or 2 SB-NEN diagnosed between 2005 and 2015 were retrieved from the Netherlands Cancer Registry and linked to The Nationwide Network and Registry of Histo- and Cytopathology in the Netherlands. Age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated based using the direct standardization method. Survival analyses were performed with the Kaplan-Meier method.
A total of 1132 patients were included for epidemiological analyses. The age-adjusted incidence rate of SB-NEN increased from 0.52 to 0.81 per 100.000 person-years between 2005 and 2015. Incidence was higher for males than females (0.93 vs. 0.69 in 2015). Most patients had grade 1 tumours (83%). Surgery was performed in 86% of patients, with resection of the primary tumour in 99%.
