Our study used qualitative methods and a life course perspective to examine whether life events and psychosocial antecedents, such as early adverse childhood experiences, play a role in the occurrence of non-intentional fall-related TBI. In-depth interviews were conducted with 27 patients who sustained a TBI due to unintentional falls. Transcripts were qualitatively analyzed to explore factors related to their prior life experiences that may have been related to the reasons that led to their falls. The results reveal that childhood family conflict and peer-influenced risky behaviors may have contributed to poorer mental and physical health in adulthood, which in turn contributed to injuries. Respondents whose behaviors did not play a direct role in their injury event were labeled "Stumblers." These patients' falls were seen as being related to unfortunate unique environmental and situational factors and could colloquially be described as "accidental falls." We also identified a distinct group of patients who had a cumulative life experience starting in early childhood that contributed to a pattern of riskier behaviors, ultimately culminating in a fall-related TBI. The second group of patients were labeled "Tumblers" as they chose to participate in risky activities, regardless of whether they considered them to be risky, which ultimately led to the fall-related TBI. This group was identified by a purposeful volitional state that sought out the "opportunity for accidental fall." The purpose of this study was to determine the association of non-routine events (NREs) during the initial resuscitation phase with these physiological disturbances. We conducted a video review of pediatric trauma resuscitations of patients with suspected TBI and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores 1 min. Vital sign monitor data were used to identify periods of significant physiological disturbances. We calculated the association between the rate of overall and moderate NREs per case and the proportion of cases with abnormal vital signs using multi-variate linear regression, controlling for GCS score and need for intubation. Among 26 resuscitations, 604 NREs were identified with a median of 23 (interquartile range [IQR] 17-27.8, range 5-44) per case. Moderate delay NREs occurred in 19 resuscitations (n = 32, median 1 NRE/resuscitation, IQR 0.3-1, range 0-5). Oxygen desaturation and respiratory depression were associated with a greater rate of moderate NREs (p = 0.008, p  less then  0.001, respectively). We observed no association between duration of hypotension, desaturation, and respiratory depression and overall NRE rate. NREs are common in the initial resuscitation of children with moderate to severe TBI. We hypothesized that regulation of cell proliferation through modulation of the sonic hedgehog pathway, a key NSC regulatory pathway, could lead to functional improvement. We assessed sonic hedgehog (Shh) protein levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with TBI. Using the cortical contusion injury (CCI) model in rodents, we used pharmacological modulators of Shh signaling to assess cell proliferation within the injured cortex using the marker 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU); 50mg/mL. The phenotype of proliferating cells was determined and quantified. Motor function was assessed using the rotarod test. In patients with TBI there is a reduction of Shh protein in CSF compared with control patients. In rodents, following a severe CCI, quiescent cells become activated. Pharmacologically modulating the Shh signaling pathway leads to changes in the number of newly proliferating injury-induced cells. We conducted a retrospective review of records comparing 2 periods pre-pandemic (February 1, 2019-February 29, 2020) and pandemic (March 1, 2020-May 31, 2020). Variables evaluated included the number of STAR enrollments, ED census, percentage of census screening positive for opioid use disorder, number and percentage of ED overdose visits, and overdose fatalities by month. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. Given the sharply increased infection rate, the number of pregnant women and children with COVID-19 is correspondingly on the rise. SARS-CoV-2 infection is transmitted through droplets; though hypothesized, other transmission routes have not been confirmed. As of now, it remains unclear whether and how SARS-CoV-2 can possibly be transmitted from the mother to the fetus.

This study examines the medical records of 30 neonates born to women with COVID-19, the objective being to provide documented information on maternal-child transmission and infant outcomes.

Out of the 30 newborns, 28 had negative PCR test results for SARS-CoV-2; among their mothers, fifteen had fever, nine had cough and twenty had delivered by cesarean section. The median birth term was 37wk2dy, and twenty of the neonates were male. Most of them were asymptomatic, except for the three who presented with shortness of breath. Two of them were intubated and both died, the first because of severe sepsis and the second due to severe hyaline membranedisease. As regards the two infected neonates, the first represents a probable case of congenital SARS-CoV-2 infection, which appears unlikely in the second case. The outcome for both of them was good, without any complications.
