Objective This study evaluates the characteristics of the foreign bodies removed from the nose, the treatment methods used, and the complications associated with the foreign body, and discusses the reports in the literature. Methods Age, gender, type of foreign body, side of nose, clinical symptoms, complaints, diagnosis and treatment methods were retrospectively evaluated in all 1724 pediatric patients with foreign bodies. Results Of the 1724 patients, 841 (48.7%) were female and 883 (51.3%) were male. Their mean age was 4.3±3.06 years (age range 4 months-16 years). Foreign body was found on the right side in 928 (53.8%), on the left-side in 768 (44.5%) and bilaterally in 28 (1.6%) patients. The foreign bodies were inorganic substances such as beads, paper, napkins, toy parts, batteries, pencils, erasers in 1287 cases (74.7%) and organic materials such as hazelnuts, walnuts and fruit seeds in 437 cases (25.3%). The foreign bodies were extracted in outpatient settings in 1709 cases. Fifteen patients in whom the foreign body was located in the posterior region and/or who were uncooperative were treated under anesthesia. The most common complication was epistaxis. Septal perforation was seen in one patient with alkaline battery. Conclusion In pediatric patients presented to the otolaryngology and the pediatrics clinics with complaints involving nasal obstruction, unilateral purulent nasal discharge, epistaxis, and foul odor, possibility of a foreign body in the nose should be kept in mind. © Copyright 2019 by Official Journal of the Turkish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.Objective To assess the effectiveness of paper patch closure of tympanic membrane perforation in patients with otomycosis and tympanic membrane perforation. Methods Fifty-six otomycosis patients with central tympanic membrane perforations were included in the study. Patients were randomized into two groups as patched (PG) and non-patched (NPG) groups. In both groups, Castellani's solution was applied to the external auditory canal. In PG patients, the perforated tympanic membrane was covered with carbon paper patch soaked in Castellani's solution to reduce ear canal humidity and to prevent fungi from passing from the ear canal to the middle ear mucosa. Paper patch was not used in NPG patients. Results There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of severity scores in the first, second, third, fourth and sixth weeks of admission (p=0.004, p=0.018, p=0.001, p=0.009, and p less then 0.001, respectively). Time to complete recovery was statistically shorter in PG patients (p less then 0.001). Disease recurrence was statistically less among PG patients compared to NPG patients (p=0.025). Conclusion Closing of perforation with paper patch and topical application of Castellani's solution was found to be an effective and safe method. The method eliminated otomycosis in a shorter period and reduced recurrence rate in patients with eardrum perforation. © Copyright 2019 by Official Journal of the Turkish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.Objective To help understand the anatomy and the diseases of the semicircular canals (SCCs) by defining the three-dimensional reconstruction of the SCCs in a model reconstructed using the two hands (two-hands model) and to determine the three-dimensional configuration of the two hands by measuring the angle between the SCCs and the sagittal plane. Methods Patients older than 18 years of age with computed tomography (CT) scans of the temporal bones taken between 2017 and 2018 at the Yeditepe University Hospital were included in the study. CT images were evaluated by a radiologist. The angles between every SCC and the sagittal plane were measured with the MIMICS 12.1 program. Mean angles between the SCCs and the sagittal plane were measured. These angles were demonstrated on the two-hands model of the SCCs by means of a goniometer and photographed. this website Results Thirty patients and 60 temporal bones were included in the study. Mean angles between the superior, the posterior, and the horizontal SCCs and the sagittal plane were found as 37.1±3.3°, 50.4±4.1°, and 89.5±4.7°, respectively. Conclusion This is the first study to define the three-dimensional representation of the SCCs with a two-hands model. This may allow for a better understanding and the better teaching of the anatomy and diseases of SCCs. © Copyright 2019 by Official Journal of the Turkish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.Objective The use of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in medical education and postgraduate education is becoming more and more widespread across the world. A survey study was carried out in Turkey to collect information and raise awareness about the use of MOOCs for educational and training purposes in the field of otorhinolaryngology after graduation. Method The prepared survey questionnaire was published on the online communication platform of the Turkish Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Association, and volunteers were asked to fill-out the questionnaire by clicking the given link. Results A total of 210 volunteers participated in the survey study. Most of the volunteers (26.2%) were in the 36-40 age range. At the time of the study 53.8% of the volunteers were working as specialist doctors, 19.5% as residents, 10.5% as professors, 8.1% as associate professors, and 8.1% as assistant professors. Only 19 (9%) respondents ticked "yes" in response to the question "Are you familiar with the MOOC programs?" and only six (2.9%) of these respondents had attended a MOOC program. Evaluation of the correlation between academic title and awareness of MOOC programs showed that the instructors had a significantly higher level of MOOC awareness compared to the specialists and the residents (p=0.032). Conclusion Results of the survey revealed that the use of MOOC programs in postgraduate otorhinolaryngology education was low and the volunteers were not well-informed about this practice. © Copyright 2019 by Official Journal of the Turkish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
