The aim of this study was to assess the epidemiological profile of unintentional opioid overdoses, the prevalence and number of psychotropic substances involved in opioid overdoses.
This was a descriptive study, in which 180 participants were enrolled, and covered a nine-years-period. For collecting data was used the National patient electronic system "My term". The variables as gender, age, duration of opioid dependence, number of overdoses, type of substance, number of antidote ampoules, duration of hospitalization were analyzed. Severity of poisoning was made by using the Poison severity score.
Opioid overdose cases were significantly higher among males than females. Mean age with standard deviation (SD) was 32.23 ± 6.71 years. Mean years (±SD) of duration of opioid use disorder was 11.60 ± 5.89 years. The most commonly used primary substance was methadone in 68.89% and heroin in 31.11% cases. Twenty patients were treated with mechanical ventilation because of the severe respiratory depression. Poison severity score was moderate in 51.11%, severe in 45.56% and fatal in 3.33% of the cases.
Most of the cases, predominantly males used one or two substances. The combination of methadone and benzodiazepine was most frequently used and the most common way was by injecting the abused substances. In most of the subjects PSS score was moderate and severe with no differences between genders.

Gastrointestinal injury caused by dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) is a reliable porcine experimental model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus casei DN 114001 (LC) on DSS-induced experimental IBD.
Eighteen female pigs (Sus scrofa f. domestica, weight 33-36 kg, age 4-5 months) were divided into 3 groups (6 animals per group) controls with no treatment, DSS, and DSS + LC. LC was administered to overnight fasting animals in a dietary bolus in the morning on days 1-7 (4.5 × 1010 live bacteria/day). DSS was applied simultaneously on days 3-7 (0.25 g/kg/day). On day 8, the pigs were sacrificed. Histopathological score and length of crypts/glands (stomach, jejunum, ileum, transverse colon), length and width of villi (jejunum, ileum), and mitotic and apoptotic indices (jejunum, ileum, transverse colon) were assessed. DSS increased the length of glands in the stomach, length of crypts and villi in the jejunum and ileum, and the histopathological score of gastrointestinal damage, length of crypts and mitotic activity in the transverse colon. Other changes did not achieve any statistical significance. Administration of LC reduced the length of villi in the jejunum and ileum to control levels and decreased the length of crypts in the jejunum.
Treatment with a probiotic strain of LC significantly accelerated regeneration of the small intestine in a DSS-induced experimental porcine model of IBD.

Contrary to the classic anatomical description, many recent studies have reported wide variations in branching patterns and location of motor branches that are supplying the pronator teres muscle. To understand these variations and their implications in surgical procedures of the nerve transfers, a systematic review was performed on the innervation of pronator teres muscle from cadaveric studies.
A systematic literature search was performed in databases such as Medline, PubMed, Google Scholar, SciELO, ScienceDirect, Cochrane reviews and orthopedics textbooks using the search terms "pronator teres nerve branches"; AND "number" OR "location" OR "length" OR "diameter" yielded 545 article links. Articles were evaluated according to PRISMA guidelines.
A total of twenty cadaveric studies including 648 branches have registered 52.9% of two branch innervation pattern followed by 31.3%-single branch pattern; 13.5%-three branch pattern; 1.7%-four branch pattern, and 0.4%-five branch patterns, respectively. Of thes information is very vital for surgeons during the nerve transfers.Caries incidence and prevalence have decreased significantly over the last few decades due to widespread use of fluoride. However, an increase in the prevalence of dental fluorosis has been reported in both fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities. Care must be taken to ensure that a balance between the optimal fluoride preventive effect at the individual and community level and minimal risk of dental fluorosis is maintained. This review describes the main sources of fluoride intake that have been identified fluoridated drinking water, dietary fluoride supplement, and topical forms comprising toothpastes, rinses, gels and varnishes. The cited data were taken from meta-analytic studies and reports from Cochrane database systematic reviews up to December 2019. Efficiency, but safety, of topically applied fluorides in individual home care is dependent on the degree of compliance of individuals/parents and on the level of competence of providers of preventive counselling. The broad spectrum of these resources allows individualization of fluoride prevention based on risk analysis of caries attack and taking into consideration other preventive measures.Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is becoming a popular method of treating infertility in Nigeria however the practice still remains largely unregulated leaving room for unethical practices and/or with possible financial exploitation of the infertile couple thereby compounding their misery. There is an urgent need for widespread adoption of proper ethical guidelines and regulation in the provision of ART services in the country for the protection of both the providers and the clients.
Childhood osteoporosis is an uncommon condition that usually develops secondary to underlying disease states. Idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis or early onset osteoporosis is a rare cause of primary osteoporosis in childhood associated with mutations in "bone fragility" genes.
The index case presented with upper back pain and was detected to have multiple vertebral fractures. Further workup for the cause revealed a homozygous benign mutation in low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5, which was also detected in the mother who remained asymptomatic till presentation. The child was successfully treated with intravenous zoledronate.
The case report describes the management approach and four-year follow-up of the child.

Smoking in pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth (PTB), intrauterine growth restriction, placental abruption and perinatal death. The association between smoking and other delivery outcomes, such as chorioamnionitis, mode of delivery or post partum hemorrhage (PPH), however, is insufficient as only few studies addressed these issues. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between prenatal smoking and delivery outcomes in a large database, while controlling for confounding effects.
A retrospective population-based study using data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS). CX-5461 concentration A dataset of all deliveries between 2004 and 2014 (inclusively) was created. Our control group included all pregnant women who did not smoke during pregnancy, which was compared to pregnant women who smoked. A multivariate logistic analysis was conducted, adjusting for any statistically significant confounding effects.
Our study identified 9,096,788 bneonates. The current study also revealed a decreased risk for PPH as well as for chorioamnionitis among pregnant smokers. The erratum corrects an author affiliation.
A minimally invasive retroperitoneal pancreatic necrosectomy (MIRPN) decreases morbidity and mortality from necrotizing acute pancreatitis. However, the impact of MIRPN on patient reported outcomes (PRO) was not investigated yet.
Patients with acute pancreatitis who underwent MIRPN between January 2010 and December 2016 were identified and invited to participate completing the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC PAN-28(CP) questionnaires. PROs were compared using Pearson correlation coefficient and ANOVA (significance p < 0.01) with an age- and sex-matched normative population of Western Europe and stratified by age and also the duration after MIRPN (<3y, >3y). A > 15 point change in PRO score was clinically important.
Among 52 eligible patients identified, 46 (88%) agreed to participate. 74% (n=34) returned questionnaires. After MIRPN all patients reported poorer physical and social functioning scores with a clinically important (>15point) reduction in those ≤50 years old; whilst fatigue, pain and i, patients should be informed that HRQL deteriorates with time often due to chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic insufficiency. This study supports the use of MIRPN and prospective studies of HRQL in this setting are indicated. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
To evaluate endothelial function in subjects with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), comparing them with subjects with chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction on the list for heart transplant (HT) and with HT patients with a normal systolic cardiac function to identify any differences.
We enrolled 28 subjects with LVAD, 55 subjects with HT, and 42 subjects with heart failure on the transplant list. The subjects underwent a general physical examination, assessment of laboratory blood parameters, and assessment of endothelial function through flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of brachial artery.
The three groups were homogeneous as regards age, gender, smoke abuse, C-reactive protein (CRP) and FMD parameters (P=ns). In LVAD group percentage of FMD change showed an inverse correlation with CRP (rho -0.5, P 0.003), a well-known marker of inflammation and tissue damage.
Continuous flow related to LVAD seems to not worsen endothelial function. Endothelial function was not affected by cardiovas that inflammation is the main determinant of endothelial function.Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most prevalent primary intraocular malignant tumor with a high lethal rate. Patients who undergo conventional enucleation treatments consistently suffer permanent blindness, facial defects, and mental disorders, therefore, novel therapeutic modalities are urgently required. Herein, an injectable and stimuli-responsive drug delivery antibacterial hydrogel (CP@Au@DC_AC50) is constructed via a facile grinding method that is inspired by the preparation process of traditional Chinese medicine. The incorporation of gold nanorods can enhance the mechanical strength of the hydrogel and realize photothermal therapy (PTT) and thermosensitive gel-sol transformation to release the gene-targeted drug DC_AC50 on demand in response to low-density near-infrared (NIR) light. The orthotopic model of UM is built successfully and indicates the excellent efficiency of CP@Au@DC_AC50 in killing tumors without damage to normal tissue because of its synergistic mild temperature PTT and gene-targeted therapy.
