Providing rehabilitation to patients with cancer can be challenging due to the medical complexity associated with the illness and its treatments. This article provides the reader with a summary of frequently encountered medical conditions in the cancer population and associated safety considerations and precautions. An update on treatment modalities commonly used for symptom management is also presented.

While overall trends in tobacco use among men are declining, tobacco use continues to rise significantly among women in developing countries. This study aimed to explore the gender-related beliefs and attitudes about tobacco use and smoking cessation in Mexico, one of the top five Latin America countries with the highest prevalence of tobacco consumption.

This study was conducted using an explanatory qualitative methods design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 adults smokers (8 women & 6 men) who visited primary healthcare clinics in Mexico City. Two researchers independently coded the interviews and applied the final codes upon consensus. Inter-rater reliability was assessed for four groups of codewords (92% agreement), based on an ecological model on socio-cultural factors.

In light of the fact that the immune response early in life differs from that of adults, we have applied a human in vitro model stimulating CD4+ T-cells from neonates, children (1-5 years), and adults antigen-specifically with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) for assessment of CTLA-4 blockade early in life. We show that T-cell proliferation as well as frequencies of antigen-specific T-cells (CD40L+CD4+) were enhanced in neonatal T-cells upon CTLA-4 blockade showing a larger variance within the group (F-test p less then .0001). Using machine learning algorithm Random Forest, adult and neonatal T-cell responses can be unambiguously categorized (F1 score-0.75) on the basis of their cytokine (co-)expression. Blockade of CTLA-4 enhanced frequencies of IL-8, IFNγ, and IL-10 producers among CD40L+ T-cells. Of note, antigen-specific T-cells from neonates displayed higher cytokine coproduction at baseline, while T-cells from children caught up to neonates, and adults to baseline of children upon CTLA-4 blockade. Fostamatinib in vivo These findings reveal that in neonatal T-cells blockade of CTLA-4 mainly unleashes the antigen-specific capacity by increasing the numbers of responding T-cells, whereas in children and adults it promotes the coexpression of cytokines by individual T-cells. Inhibition of the ADCC function of NK cells through interactions between inhibitory killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and HLA class I ligands is associated with resistance of cancers to rituximab. In this study, we deeply investigated the impact of KIR, HLA class I, and CD16 genotypes on rituximab-dependent NK cell responses in both an in vitro cellular model from healthy blood donors and ex vivo rituximab-treated non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients. We highlight that an HLA environment with limited KIR ligands is beneficial to promoting a higher frequency of KIR+ NK cells including both educated and uneducated NK cells, two NK cell compartments that demonstrate higher rituximab-dependent degranulation than KIR- NK cells. In contrast, a substantial KIR ligand environment favors a higher frequency of poorly effective KIR- NK cells and numerous functional KIR/HLA inhibitions of educated KIR+ NK cells. These phenomena explain why NHL patients with limited KIR ligands respond better to rituximab. In this HLA environment, CD16 polymorphism appears to have a collateral effect. Furthermore, we show the synergic effect of KIR2DS1, which strongly potentiates NK cell ADCC from C2- blood donors against C2+ target cells. Taken together, these results pave the way for stronger prediction of rituximab responses for NHL patients. HLA class I typing and peripheral blood KIR+ NK cell frequency could be simple and useful markers for predicting rituximab response.Activation of STimulator of INterferon Genes (STING) is important for induction of anti-tumor immunity. A dysfunctional STING pathway is observed in multiple cancer types and associates with poor prognosis and inferior response to immunotherapy. However, the association between STING and prognosis in virally induced cancers such as HPV-positive cervical cancer remains unknown. Here, we investigated the prognostic value of STING protein levels in cervical cancer using tumor tissue microarrays of two patient groups, primarily treated with surgery (n = 251) or radio(chemo)therapy (n = 255). We also studied CD103, an integrin that marks tumor-reactive cytotoxic T cells that reside in tumor epithelium and that is reported to associate with improved prognosis. Notably, we found that a high level of STING protein was an independent prognostic factor for improved survival in both the surgery and radio(chemo)therapy group. High infiltration of CD103+ T cells was associated with improved survival in the radio(chemo)therapy group.
