We aimed to identify relationships between OCM and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease biomarkers in postmenopausal women. A total of 131 postmenopausal women participated in this study and were stratified by the incidence of FL based on the hepatic steatosis index (HSI). Food intake was evaluated using dietary records. Aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase concentrations in serum were measured using the colorimetric method. Total homocysteine and GSH concentrations in plasma were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. Folate and phosphatidylcholine (PC) concentrations were determined in red blood cells using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Other OCM biomarkers concentrations were measured using the isotope dilution analysis. Women with FL (HSI > 36) had lower GSH, choline, and betaine concentrations than women without FL (HSI less then 36). Higher HSI level was negatively correlated with betaine and PC and positively correlated with plasma choline/betaine ratio. The present study aims to describe epilepsy surgery outcomes in the pediatric population from a tertiary center in India.

Children less than 18 years who underwent epilepsy surgery between June 2015 and December 2019 for whom at least a 1-year follow-up was available, were retrospectively evaluated for clinical presentation, radiology, surgical intervention, and seizure outcomes.

Out of a total of 355 epilepsy surgeries performed, 242 were in the pediatric group (140 males, 80 females). The mean age at surgery was 9.4 years±4.8 years (range 4 months-18 years). The mean duration of epilepsy was 5.64 years±3.91 (range 2 months-17 years). 126 patients experienced daily seizures, 45 weekly and 39 reported monthly seizures. Six had refractory status epilepticus. All the patients were on multiple anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) the mean number of AEDs was 3.27±0.98 (range 2-7 AEDs). Focal seizure was the most common seizure type seen in 72.27% of children (159/220). The risk of developing new-onset seizure following ascent to high-altitude areas is currently unknown. We undertook a prospective study to quantify this risk.

The study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in India between July 2015 and December 2017. It included apparently healthy males of age ≥18 years who ascended to an altitude of ≥ 2500m and stayed there for > 30 continuous days. Individuals with a history of seizure in the past two years, those who had not undergone acclimatization protocol, and those who had a history of any chronic systemic illness were excluded.

The 39,213 individuals included in the study together had 39,848.6 person-years of high-altitude exposure. New-onset seizure after ascent occurred in 41 of them, indicating a seizure incidence rate of 102.9 per 100,000 person-years (95% CI=75.8-139.7). The incidence per 100,000 person-years (95% CI) at altitudes of 2,500-3,500m, 3,500-5,800m, and > 5,800m was 82.3 (53.6-126.1), 134.6 (84.9-213.6), and 210.8 (52.8-841.4), respectively. Seizure was secondary to cerebral venous thrombosis in 12 (29.3%) individuals. No etiology could be determined in the remaining 29 (70.7%) individuals.

Many patients who may otherwise benefit from anastomoses get a permanent colostomy for low rectal cancers in low- and middle-income countries because of lack of training and/or lack of equipment for low rectal anastomoses. Our local team provided stepwise training for stapled low rectal anastomoses.

Local surgeons with overseas formal training in colorectal surgeries facilitated periodical simulation-based training workshops on stapled low rectal anastomoses for surgeons and trainees over 3y (2015-2017) in a Nigerian tertiary hospital. Additional training with live surgeries was conducted.

Twenty-six participants, including 12 consultant surgeons and 14 senior registrars, concluded hand-on training modules in both wet and dry laboratory sessions. Two-thirds of them also had opportunities to assist during live surgeries. After initial training, stapled low rectal anastomoses were carried out by a team of consultants operating together. With time, locally trained residents assisted consultants in carrying out the procedures. Of the 198 colorectal procedures carried out within the study period, 18 (0.09%) were rectal resections and anastomoses, of which 14 were stapled low rectal anastomoses.

Although there are many patient-reported outcome measures used for ventral hernia (VH), disease-specific instruments, such as the Hernia-related Quality-of-Life (QoL) Survey (HerQLes) and Abdominal Hernia-Q (AHQ), have shown greater accuracy in capturing all VH-related QoL. We present a novel calibration that allows providers to convert scores between the AHQ and HerQLes, enabling better unification of QoL data.

Patients with VH were prospectively identified and simultaneously administered both the AHQ and HerQLes pre- and post-operatively. To ensure the validity of the calibration, responses were excluded if patients answered instruments on different dates or if the responses were discordant on corresponding questions within each instrument. The calibration was estimated using a linear mixed effects model, including linear and quadratic scores, timing of survey relative to surgery and their interactions as fixed effects, and patients as random effects to account for multiple surveys from the same patient.

In total, 109 patients were included, responding to 300 pairs of surveys (112 preoperative and 188 postoperative), of which 17 (5.6%) were excluded because of discordant responses. Conversion of the HerQLes to AHQ was most accurate when including whether the survey was completed pre- or post-operatively, with a mean squared error of 0.0091. Similarly, converting the AHQ to HerQLes was most accurate when factoring in the timing of survey administration, with a mean squared error of 0.016.

From there, it can be transmitted to humans by aerosolization resulting in severe pneumonia. Most large outbreaks are caused by cooling towers colonized with L. pneumophila. The resident microbiota of the cooling tower is a key determinant for the colonization and growth of L. pneumophila. In our preceding study, the genus Pseudomonas correlated negatively with the presence of L. pneumophila in cooling towers, but it was not clear which species was responsible. Therefore, we identified the Pseudomonas species inhabiting 14 cooling towers using a Pseudomonas-specific 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing strategy. We found that cooling towers that are free of L. pneumophila contained a high relative abundance of members from the Pseudomonas alcaliphila/oleovorans phylogenetic cluster. P. alcaliphila JCM 10630 inhibited the growth of L. pneumophila on agar plates. Analysis of the P. alcaliphila genome revealed the presence of a gene cluster predicted to produce toxoflavin.
