At present, the levels of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in arable land are high and affect the growth and development of important food crops, including rice and maize. However, the application of silicon (Si) in contaminated areas increases the metal tolerance potential of these plants. This work aimed to study the variations in the distribution pattern of endogenous Si in various tissue regions in roots and leaves of rice and maize exposed to cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) stresses. For these experiments, 45 day-old rice (var. Varsha) and maize (var. CoHM6) seedlings were treated with 1.95 g Zn and 0.45 g Cd kg-1 soil. Under Cd stress, the distribution of Si was high in the cortical region of the root, but under Zn stress, the highest Si deposition was found in the endodermis. In leaves, Si deposition was high in both the mesodermis and stelar regions of Cd-treated plants but more Si was deposited in the mesodermis tissue of Zn-treated plants. Heavy metal (Cd and Zn) accumulation and Si deposition showed a strong negative correlation in the roots of rice and maize plants. Complexation with metal ions and redistribution of Si were considered the major mechanisms in Si-mediated mitigation of Cd and Zn stress. Cd- and Zn-induced anatomical changes, such as endodermal thickening, deposits in the xylary elements and aerenchyma formation in the roots of rice and maize, were also associated with the Si distribution. The current study tested the hypothesis that variation in parental emotional support explains differences in cortisol reactivity among 159 youth, including both previously institutionalized (PI; N = 78) and non-adopted (NA; N = 81) children (ages 9-10) and adolescents (ages 15-16). Youth participated in a Modified Trier Social Stress Test after a period of preparation with either their parent or a supportive stranger. Saliva samples were collected to derive a measure of cortisol reactivity. Our findings revealed that parents buffered the cortisol stress response for PI children and adolescents only if they were high on emotional support. Our results also suggest that simply preparing with a parent might buffer the stress response for NA children; for NA adolescents, however, only emotionally supportive parents significantly buffered their adolescents' stress.Water deficit (WD), a major contributor to yield reductions in faba bean (Vicia faba), is a complex phenomenon that varies across daily to seasonal cycles. Several studies have identified various morphological and physiological indicators of WD tolerance, which generally show limited water use during WD. Limited information is available on the impact of WD on nutrient content and reproductive biology of the faba bean. We studied carbohydrates, amino acids, mineral nutrients and the abundance of naturally occurring carbon isotopes (δ13 C) in leaf and grain tissues of faba bean genotypes grown under well-watered (WW) and WD conditions. δ13 C of leaf tissues were found to indicate changes in water use due to WD but this was not reflected in grain tissues. Nutrient concentrations with regard to amino acids and minerals were not influenced by WD. compound library inhibitor However, carbohydrate accumulation was found to be significant for WD, specifically through the presence of a higher concentration of myo-inositol in WD leaf tissues. Alternatively, sucrose concentration in grain tissues was reduced under WD treatment. WD hampered reproductive functionality by reducing pollen viability and germination with the severity and duration of stress and this reduction was less prominent in the drought-tolerant genotype (AC0805#4912) compared to the sensitive one (11NF010c-4). It was also demonstrated that WD caused developmental impairment in the stamen and pistil, where the pistil appeared more sensitive than stamen. These findings suggest that WD impairs pollen viability and pistil function reducing yield volume, but the nutrient content of the resulting yield is not significantly affected.Pneumonia represents a major health care burden and Gram-negative bacteria provide an increasing therapeutic challenge at least in part through the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains. IL-33 is a multifunctional cytokine belonging to the IL-1 family that can affect many different cell types. We sought here to determine the effect of recombinant IL-33 on the host response during murine pneumonia caused by the common Gram-negative pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae. IL-33 pretreatment prolonged survival for more than 1 day during lethal airway infection and decreased bacterial loads at the primary site of infection and distant organs. Postponed treatment with IL-33 (3 h) also reduced bacterial growth and dissemination. IL-33-mediated protection was not observed in mice deficient for the IL-33 receptor component IL-1 receptor-like 1. IL-33 induced a brisk type 2 response, characterized by recruitment of type 2 innate lymphoid cells to the lungs and enhanced release of IL-5 and IL-13. However, neither absence of innate lymphoid cells or IL-13, nor blocking of IL-5 impacted on IL-33 effects in mice infected with Klebsiella. Likewise, IL-33 remained effective in reducing bacterial loads in mice lacking B, T, and natural killer T cells. Experiments using antibody-mediated cell depletion indicated that neutrophils and inflammatory monocytes were of importance for antibacterial defense. The capacity of IL-33 to restrict bacterial growth in the lungs was strongly reduced in mice depleted of both neutrophils and inflammatory monocytes, but not in mice selectively depleted of either one of these cell types. These results suggest that IL-33 boosts host defense during bacterial pneumonia by a combined effect on neutrophils and inflammatory monocytes. © 2020 The Authors. A symmetrical torso has equivalent areas of shape on either side of the midline. The posterior torso has two areas of prominence, known as the 'most prominent points' on either side of the midline which can be used as reference points to measure symmetry of the posterior torso. This study used the three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of the most prominent points, measured using ISIS2 surface topography and standardised by torso size, in children without abnormal surface topography, with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) (right thoracic curves) and with Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK). The purpose was to demonstrate the variability of the position of the points in these three groups. The variability of the 3D coordinates was calculated for each group (mean, standard deviation and range in millimetres) and the standardised data were illustrated using 3D 95% confidence interval ellipsoids. In those without deformity, the position of the left and right point was mirrored with little difference.
