The objective of this study is to investigate the utility of gelatin hydrogel-fragmented fibers (GHFF) as a material to suppress the shrinkage of cell sheets, which often happens upon detaching from a culture plate. The GHFF were fabricated by cutting gelatin hydrogel nonwoven fabrics. MC3T3-E1 cells were simply mixed with different amounts of GHFF, followed by culturing to formulate the cell sheet homogeneously incorporating GHFF. When detached from the culture plate, the cell sheet formulated without GHFF shrunk while the area became about 23% of the original one before detachment. On the contrary, the cell sheet formulated with GHFF hardly shrunk. The lactate/glucose ratio of a metabolic activity was significantly lower and the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production was higher for the cell sheet formulated with the GHFF than that obtained without the GHFF. An osteogenic activity was high for the cell sheet formulated with the GHFF compared with that obtained without the GHFF. The GHFF addition was a simple and promising method to fabricate active cell sheets without size change. Impact Statement This study introduces the utility of gelatin hydrogel-fragmented fibers (GHFF) for cell sheet engineering. Upon detaching from the culture plate, the cell sheet formulated without GHFF shrunk, while the area became about 23% of the original one before detachment. On the contrary, the cell sheet formulated with GHFF hardly shrunk. The GHFF allowed cell sheets to enhance the metabolic and osteogenic activities. The GHFF addition was a simple and promising method to fabricate active cell sheets without size change. Objective The aim of this work was to examine the association between adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MD) and lung function in older adults.Design This was an observational and cross-sectional study.Setting This research was conducted among community-dwelling older adults from the 2014 Health and Retirement Study (HRS).Subjects Subjects were 2108 adults aged 50 years or older, 1234 (58.5%) of whom were female.Measures Dietary intakes from respondents of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were used for the current analysis. Adherence to MD was evaluated using the MedDietScore, while lung function was evaluated through peak expiratory flow rate (PEF; l/min). Multiple linear regression and logistic regression were performed, adjusted for potential confounders, to examine the relation between adherence to MD and lung function. Results Mean MedDietScore was 28.0 (± 5.0), indicating a moderate adherence to MD. Multiple linear regression showed a significant association between the MedDietScore and lung function (β = 0.072, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.039-0.104) after adjusting for age, gender, body mass index, race, comorbidities, education, height, grip strength, smoking history, physical activity, and daily caloric intake. Specific food groups such as grains, dairy products, and fish consumption were also associated with PEF rate (p  less then  0.05). Logistic regression confirmed these findings, and high adherence to MD was associated with reduced risk of having PEF rate less then 80% of its peak predictive value (odds ratio 0.65, 95% CI 0.48-0.89).Conclusions The results of this study indicate that adherence to MD is an independent predictor of lung function in older adults, and dietary interventions could be a possible preventive measure in adults with a high risk of developing lung function decline. After the first, imported, laboratory-confirmed case of monkeypox in human was reported in Singapore on May 2019, countries in Asia started to strengthen disease surveillance systems. One challenge in preventing monkeypox is a lack of knowledge, particularly among healthcare workers. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of monkeypox among general practitioners (GPs) in Indonesia. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted. The survey collected participants' knowledge on a 21-item scale and explanatory variables. A two-step logistic regression analysis was employed to assess the predictors of knowledge of monkeypox. A total of 432 GPs were included; 10.0% and 36.5% of them had a good knowledge using an 80% and 70% cutoff point for knowledge domain, respectively. No explanatory variables were associated with knowledge when using 80% cutoff point. Using the lower cutoff, there was lower knowledge among GPs who graduated from universities located in Sumatra or other islands versus Java (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 0.53; 95%CI 0.28-0.97, p = 0.041) and among those were older than 30 years compared to younger GPs (aOR 0.61; 95%CI 0.39-0.96, p = 0.033). GPs working in private clinics had less knowledge compared to GPs in community health centers (aOR 0.55; 95%CI 0.31-0.99, p = 0.047). In conclusion, knowledge of monkeypox among GPs in Indonesia is relatively low in all groups. Increasing knowledge of monkeypox will be key to improving the capacity of GPs to respond to human monkeypox cases and to report into a disease surveillance system.Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the disease pattern and treatment of diverticular abscesses. Methods Patients treated for diverticulitis (K57) in Västmanland, Sweden were identified for this retrospective population-based study between January 2010 and December 2014. Patients with diverticular abscesses were included. The clinical and radiological data were extracted, and the computed tomography scans were reevaluated. Results Of the 75 patients (45 women) with a median age of 62 years (range 23-88 years), abscesses were localized pericolic in 42 patients (59%) and in the pelvis in 33 patients (41%). The median abscess size was 4.8 cm (range 1.1-11.0 cm). Six patients (8%) required urgent surgical intervention during the index admission. The median follow-up time was 58 months (range 0-95 months). During follow-up, 40 patients (58%) had disease recurrence and 35 of these patients (88%) presented with complicated diverticulitis. The median time until re-admission was 2 months (range 3 days-94 months). Patients with pelvic abscesses developed fistulas more frequently, 3 versus 11 patients (p = .003). Twenty-three percent of patients with pericolic abscesses required surgery compared with 40% of patients with pelvic abscesses (p = .09). No patients had a recurrence of abscesses after a colonic resection. Conclusion The majority of patients with diverticular abscesses had recurrences with repeated admissions regardless of abscess location. An unexpectedly high proportion of patients required surgical intervention during the follow-up period. A liberal approach regarding elective surgery for patients with recurrent diverticulitis abscesses who tolerate surgery seems justified.A randomized controlled phase I/II clinical trial was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of encapsulated human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in a plasma-derived biomaterial for regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) in mature permanent teeth with apical lesions. The trial included 36 patients with mature incisors, canines, or mandibular premolars showing pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis. Patients were randomly and equally allocated between experimental (REP) or conventional root canal treatment (ENDO) groups. On the first visit, cavity access and mechanical preparation of the root canal were performed. Calcium hydroxide medication was used, and the cavity was sealed. Three weeks later, patients were treated following their assigned protocol of ENDO or REP. Clinical follow-up examinations were performed at 6 and 12 mo. Categorical variables were evaluated by Fisher's exact test. Quantitative variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney test. The evolution over time of the percentage of perfusion units and the dimensions of lesion and cortical compromise were explored. After the 12-mo follow-up, no adverse events were reported, and the patients showed 100% clinical efficacy in both groups. Interestingly, in the REP group, the perfusion unit percentage measured by laser Doppler flowmetry revealed an increase from 60.6% to 78.1% between baseline and 12-mo follow-up. Sensitivity tests revealed an increase of the positive pulp response in the REP group at 12-mo follow-up (from 6% to 56% on the cold test, from 0% to 28% on the hot test, and from 17% to 50% on the electrical test). We present the first clinical safety and efficacy evidence of the endodontic use of allogenic umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells encapsulated in a plasma-derived biomaterial. The innovative approach, based on biological principles that promote dentin-pulp regeneration, presents a promising alternative for the treatment of periapical pathology (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03102879).Laboratory animal models are beneficial when they recapitulate all or just some of the clinical and immunological manifestations of the disease. Various animals such as cats, rats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, horses, minks, pigs, and primates have been described lupus-like phenotype. However, a mouse has remained the preferable animal for scientific investigations as a result of their reduced lifespan, easy reproduction, markedly low costs, public acceptance, ease of genetic management, and the probability to stay under standardized conditions. It is highly challenging to establish a mouse model with all features of lupus because of the difficulty and the heterogeneity of the clinical features in systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). Additionally, due to the multiple differences between the mouse and human immune system, the direct translation usually fails. Each mouse model has specific characteristics and shares many subsets of aspects with the disease observed in humans, which gives researchers a tool to select their particular needs. Over 50 years, many mice models have been developed and used to dissect the pathogenesis of lupus, also to test novel drugs and therapies. In general, mice models that contribute considerably in SLE understanding can be divided into four groups Spontaneous models, induced models, genetically modified models, along with humanizing mouse models that are the link between the mouse and human immune system. In this updated review, we will present what has been learned from different lupus mice models and how these models have contributed to a better understanding of lupus pathogenesis and treatment.A study regarding the role and uniqueness of psychiatric nursing was conducted with 94 participants from Manitoba, Canada. The primary theme of comprehensive knowledge of mental health, mental illness, and addictions was foundational for the application of the sub-themes of therapeutic relationship, holistic approach, recovery orientation, stigma reduction, and advocacy for change. Values, beliefs, and attitudes towards people with mental illness and addictions need to be instilled in psychiatric nursing students throughout their educational program to provide high quality, compassionate, and safe care. Implications for incorporation of the theme and sub-themes into psychiatric nursing curriculum are described in the paper. Background Concomitant laparoscopic splenectomy and cholecystectomy (CLSC) is performed for concurrent pathologies of the spleen and gallbladder. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the available evidence on its indications, operative technique, and outcomes. Materials and Methods The PubMed and Cochrane bibliographical databases were searched from the beginning of time (last search December 6, 2019) for studies reporting on CLSC. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) quality assessment tool was utilized for the evaluation of eligible articles. Results Eight studies met inclusion criteria and concerned collectively 108 patients (53 males and 55 females) with a mean age of 27.02 ± 20.48 years (mean, SD). selleck The most common surgery indications were hereditary spherocytosis (38.9%) and sickle cell disease or β-thalassemia (32.4%). Laparoscopic cholecystectomy preceded splenectomy in the majority of cases (75%). A five-trocar approach was most frequently (89.8%) utilized. The mean operation duration was 170.
