The incidence of cirrhosis in Iceland has been the lowest in the world with only 3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Alcohol consumption has almost doubled in Iceland from 1980 to 2016. Obesity has also risen and hepatitis C virus has spread among people who inject drugs in Iceland. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of these risk factors on the incidence and aetiology of cirrhosis in Iceland.
The study included all patients diagnosed with cirrhosis for the first time during 2010-2015. Diagnosis was based on liver histology or 2 of 4 criteria cirrhosis on imaging, ascites, varices, and/or elevated INR.
Overall, 157 patients were diagnosed, 105 (67%) males, mean age 61 years. The overall incidence was 9.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants annually. Alcohol was the only underlying cause in 48/157 (31%), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in 34/157(22%), and alcohol and hepatitis C together in 23/157(15%) were the most common causes. In a nationwide population-based study from Iceland, including all patients diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver over a period of 5 years, we found the incidence of new cases had increased 3-fold compared with a previous study 20 years ago. Furthermore, we found that with thorough investigations, a specific cause for cirrhosis could be found in 94% of patients. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) determined by patient-reported outcomes (PROs) is impaired in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and C patients, but there are no data regarding patients with chronic hepatitis D (CHD). The aim of this study was to assess PRO scores in untreated patients with CHD and compare them with those obtained for patients with CHB.
Patients with CHD completed 3 PRO instruments (Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire [CLDQ], Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue [FACIT-F], and Work Productivity and Activity Impairment [WPAI]), and the results were compared with those of patients mono-infected with CHB.
In total, 125 patients were included 43 with CHD and 82 with CHB. Overall, baseline PROs showed differences between both groups. Several assessments, such as the worry score from CLDQ (

Chronic hepatitis D (CHD) is a viral disease that causes rapid evolution to liver cirrhosis, amongst other severe complications, when compared to patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Health-related quality of life in chronic hepatitis C and CHB has been reported widely, but no studies have been performed on patient-reported outcomes in patients with CHD. Results showed that CHD patients reported worse outcomes in psychological domains such as worry and emotional well-being, as well as in physical domains such as abdominal symptoms, physical well-being, and activity impairment in comparison with patients with CHB.
Fatal police violence in the United States disproportionately affects Black, Native American, and Hispanic people, and for these groups it is a racially oppressive population-level stressor that we hypothesize increases the risk of pregnancy loss. Focusing on core based statical areas (CBSAs) surrounding small and large urban centers, we accordingly tested whether gestational exposure to fatal police violence decreased the number of live births, which is reflective of a rise in lost pregnancies.
Our observational study linked microdata for all births (
=7,709,300) in 520 CBSAs with at least one incident of fatal police violence in 2013-2015 to Fatal Encounters, a database that prospectively identified 2594 police-related fatalities using online media reports and public records. We estimated the association between month-to-month fatal police violence and conceptions resulting in live births using distributed lag quasi-Poisson models with CBSA-level fixed effects, adjusted for seasonality and stratified by maternal race/ethnicity.
For each additional police-related fatality that occurred in the first through sixth months of gestation, we observed a 0.14% decrease (95% confidence interval 0.05%, 0.23%) in the total number of live births within CBSAs, and a 0.29% decrease in births to Black women (95% CI 0.11%, 0.48%). The association was null for births to White women.
Our findings suggest fatal police violence may have population-level consequences for pregnancy loss and adds to the evidence regarding the importance of preventing these fatalities.

Lupus enteritis (LE), a main cause of acute abdominal pain in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, is a serious and potentially fatal complication. This study aimed to identify clinical serological indicators to establish a nomogram to assess LE in SLE patients with gastrointestinal manifestations.
The clinical and laboratory data of SLE patients with gastrointestinal manifestations that were hospitalized in the West China Hospital from January 2010 to January 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression model was used to select potentially relevant features. Subsequently, a nomogram was developed using multivariable logistic analysis. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic curve, a calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA).
