The maternal direct and permanent effects were meagre for all the traits. The ewe weights had strongly negative correlations with the age of sexual maturity and positive correlations with lamb survival. The results emphasise the need to optimize the weights of maiden ewes to improve reproductive performance. This study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters of milk (305-day milk yield (MY305)), growth (weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), and weight at 550 days (W550)), and reproductive (age at first calving (AFC)) traits in Guzerá cattle by using Bayesian multiple-trait models. Systematic effects included sex and age at calving for the growth and milk traits, respectively. The additive genetic and contemporary groups (herd and year and season of birth) were included as random effects. Additionally, maternal genetic and permanent effects were also included as random effects for the WW. The heritability estimates were 0.29 (MY305), 0.42 (WW), 0.49 (YW), 0.56 (W550), and 0.25 (AFC). The genetic correlations among the growth traits were higher than 0.83; between the MY305 and WW, MY305 and YW, and MY305 and W550, the genetic correlations were 0.25, 0.32, and 0.36, respectively. The AFC was negatively correlated with the milk and growth traits. These results suggest the viability and potential of the joint selection for milk, beef, and reproductive traits in Guzerá cattle.PURPOSE Adult vitelliform lesions (AVL) are associated with age related macular degeneration (AMD) and subretinal drusenoid deposits (SRDD). We evaluated the natural course of AVL, assessing the influence of SRDD on disease progression, visual function and incidence of macular atrophy (MA) and choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM). METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2011 and March 2016. Demographic, clinical and imaging data from 26 consecutive AVL patients were analysed following case note review. Optical coherence tomography images were graded for SRDD and patients divided into those with/without SRDD. Outcomes included presenting/changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and incidence of MA/CNVM. RESULTS Mean age was 78.6 ± 7.6 years. Mean follow-up was 51.5 ± 25.6 months. Twelve patients (46.2%) had SRDD at presentation with 3 more (11.5%) developing them. Subjects with SRDD were older (mean 81.7 ± 6.1 years vs 74.3 ± 7.6 years, p = 0.010). Mean presenting BCVA was worse in SRDD eyes (0.39 ± 0.31 logMAR vs 0.19 ± 0.18 logMAR, p = 0.017). Eight of 15 patients with SRDD (53.3%) developed incident MA or CNVM; higher than those with no SRDD (1/11, 9.1%; p = 0.036). Two patients (7.7%) developed full thickness macular holes. CONCLUSIONS Patients with AVL and SRDD likely represent an advanced pathological stage or phenotype with worse visual outcome and higher risk of MA/CNVM. Possible overlap with AMD exists. Follow-up, counselling and provisions for early detection/treatment of complications should be made. Better classification including improved understanding of phenotypic and genetic variations with reference to comorbid diseases including AMD is required. Presence of SRDD in AVL offers a dichotomous classification, indicating risk of future MA/CNVM formation. The Wumeng semi-fine wool sheep is vital to the production system of the Wumeng mountainous area in Southwest China. To study the effect of nano-copper poisoning in the Wumeng semi-fine wool sheep, nano-copper poisoning model was established in sheep. We determined blood physiological and biochemical parameters, immune indexes, and antioxidant indicators. The results showed that Hb, RBC, and PCV levels in blood from the nano-copper group were markedly lower (P less then 0.01) than those in the control group. Serum LDH, AST, ALT, CPK, and Cp from the nano-copper group were significantly higher (P less then 0.01) than those in control animals. Serum SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, and T-AOC from the nano-copper group were significantly lower (P less then 0.01) than those in control sheep, and MDA content in serum from the nano-copper group were markedly higher (P less then 0.01) than those in control sheep. The levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-1β, IgA, IgM, and IgG from the nano-copper group were significantly lower (P less then 0.01) than those in the control group. It was concluded that nano-copper poisoning could not only affect the immune function of Wumeng semi-fine wool sheep but also reduce the antioxidant capacity.Mammalian Na+/H+ exchanger type I isoform (NHE1) is a ubiquitously expressed membrane protein that regulates intracellular pH (pHi) by removing one intracellular proton in exchange for one extracellular sodium ion. Abnormal activity of the protein occurs in cardiovascular disease and breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of negatively charged amino acids of extracellular loop 3 (EL3) in the activity of the NHE protein. We mutated glutamic acid 217 and aspartic acid 226 to alanine, and to glutamine and asparagine, respectively. We examined effects on expression levels, cell surface targeting and activity of NHE1, and also characterized affinity for extracellular sodium and lithium ions. Neratinib nmr Individual mutation of these amino acids had little effect on protein function. However, mutation of both these amino acids together impaired transport, decreasing the Vmax for both Na+ and Li+ ions. We suggested that amino acids E217 and D226 form part of a negatively charged coordination sphere, which facilitates cation transport in the NHE1 protein.PURPOSE The effect of combining miniaturization with endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS) is unclear. Thus, we compared the treatment outcomes between minimally invasive ECIRS (mini-ECIRS) using 16.5 Fr percutaneous access sheath and standard ECIRS using 24 Fr access sheath for renal stones MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed consecutive patients who underwent single session mini or standard-ECIRS in the modified Valdivia position for renal stones between April 2009 and May 2016. To adjust for patient characteristics, 77 pairs were matched using preoperative parameters including age, sex, history of febrile urinary tract infection (UTI), stone surface area, number of involved calyces, and staghorn calculi. RESULTS The stone free rate (SFR) was similar between mini and standard ECIRS according to non-contrast computed tomography (61.1% vs. 52.0%, p = 0.388). The rate of perioperative complications exceeding grade 2 based on the Clavien-Dindo classification was similar in both groups (19.
