A systematic review of the literature was carried out. The analysis concerned the methodology and presentation of research results. In most studies assessing energy expenditure, energy expenditure was expressed in kcal per day (n = 9) and as the mean and standard deviation (n = 7). Most authors provided a detailed measurement protocol, including measurement duration (n = 10) and device calibration information (n = 7). Ten papers provided information on the day of hospitalisation when the measurements were obtained, nine on patient nutrition, and twelve on the criteria for inclusion and exclusion of participants from the study. Small study group sizes and study at a single centre were among the most cited limitations. Studies assessing energy expenditure in patients with sepsis by indirect calorimetry differ in the methodology and presentation of results, and their collective analysis is difficult. A meta-analysis of the results could enable multi-site and large patient evaluation. Standardisation of protocols and presentation of all collected data would enable their meta-analysis, which would help to achieve greater knowledge about metabolism in sepsis.Adiposity rebound (AR) is defined as the second rise in the body mass index (BMI) usually occurring in early childhood. This study aimed to investigate the timing of AR and the factors determining early AR (EAR) by tracking BMI patterns using large-scale longitudinal nationwide data (n = 142,668; 73,389 boys and 69,279 girls) over seven time periods (4-6, 9-12, 18-24, 30-36, 42-48, 54-60, and 66-71 months). The average BMI rebound indicating AR was found before the age of 5 years (6th time period, 54-60 months). Interestingly, children experiencing BMI rebound during the 4th to 6th time periods showed a small increase in the proportion of underweight in the 2nd time period, but a dramatically higher proportion of underweight during the corresponding time period, similar to M-shaped patterns. In contrast, overweight or obese children in the above group showed opposite W-shaped patterns. The parameters predicting the risk of EAR are diverse for each time period by sex. Adequate breastfeeding before the age of 1 year, adequate diet, and reduced sugar-sweetened beverage consumption after the age of 1 year were important for reducing EAR. This study presents for the first time, the timing of AR and the major determinants of EAR among Korean infants and children based on large-scale nationwide data.Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients are at high risk of presenting with arterial calcification or stiffness, which confers increased cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. In recent years, it has become evident that VC is an active process regulated by various molecules that may act as inhibitors of vessel mineralization. Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), one the most powerful naturally occurring inhibitors of arterial calcification, requires vitamin K as a co-factor in order to undergo post-translational γ-carboxylation and phosphrorylation and become biologically active. The inactive form of MGP (dephosphorylated, uncarboxylated dp-ucMGP) reflects vitamin K deficiency and has been repeatedly associated with surrogate markers of VC, stiffness, and cardiovascular outcomes in CKD populations. As CKD is a state of progressive vitamin K depletion and VC, research has focused on clinical trials aiming to investigate the possible beneficial effects of vitamin K in CKD and dialysis patients. In this study, we aim to review the current evidence regarding vitamin K supplementation in uremic patients. The opioid antagonist naltrexone (NTX) decreases intake of preferred diets in rats at very low doses relative to doses needed to decrease intake of "bland" laboratory chow. In the absence of an opioid agonist, NTX is not discriminable using operant techniques. In the current study, we found that rats given intermittent access to a 25% sucrose solution learned to discriminate between various naltrexone doses and saline. None of the rats given only water learned to discriminate between naltrexone and saline. When access to the sucrose solution was discontinued for 14 days, the rats lost the ability to discriminate between NTX and saline. We also studied the changes of c-Fos IR in selected brain regions in rats treated with saline versus NTX that were drinking water or 25% sucrose. An injection of NTX or saline resulted in a significant drug, diet, and interaction effect in various brain regions associated with feeding behavior, particularly the amygdala, accumbens, and hypothalamic sites. Thus, we found that ingestion of a sucrose solution results in the ability of rats to reliably discriminate naltrexone administration. In addition, sucrose and naltrexone altered c-Fos IR in an interactive fashion in brain regions known to be involved in ingestion behavior. The human gut microbiota is currently the focus of converging interest in many diseases and sports performance. This review presents gut microbiota as a real "orchestra conductor" in the host's physio(patho)logy due to its implications in many aspects of health and disease. Reciprocally, gut microbiota composition and activity are influenced by many different factors, such as diet and physical activity. Literature data have shown that macro- and micro-nutrients influence gut microbiota composition. Cumulative data indicate that gut bacteria are sensitive to modulation by physical activity, as shown by studies using training and hypoactivity models. Sports performance studies have also presented interesting and promising results. Therefore, gut microbiota could be considered a "pivotal" organ for health and sports performance, leading to a new concept the nutrition-microbiota-physical activity triad. The next challenge for the scientific and medical communities is to test this concept in clinical studies. The long-term aim is to find the best combination of the three elements of this triad to optimize treatments, delay disease onset, or enhance sports performance. The many possibilities offered by biotic supplementation and training modalities open different avenues for future research.Sarcopenia is frequently encountered in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). We evaluated and compared the diagnostic performance of a strength, assistance walking, rise from a chair, climb stairs, and falls (SARC-F) questionnaire, SARC-F combined with calf circumference (SARC-CalF), and calf circumference (CC) for screening sarcopenia among patients undergoing PD. We measured the appendicular skeletal muscle mass, evaluated using a multifrequency bioimpedance spectroscopy device, handgrip strength, and 6-m gait speed. SARC-F, SARC-CalF, and CC were obtained in all participants. Sarcopenia was defined using four different diagnostic criteria, including the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019, revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2), Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), and International Working Group on Sarcopenia (IWGS). Among 186 enrolled patients undergoing PD (mean age 57.5 ± 14.1 years), the sarcopenia prevalence was 25.8-38.2% using the four definitions. The discriminative powers of SARC-CalF (range 0.648-0.748) and CC (range 0.652-0.813) against the four definitions were better than those exhibited by SARC-F (range 0.587-0.625), which achieved significant difference, except when adopting the criteria of the FNIH. After stratification by gender, the superiority of SARC-CalF and CC over SARC-F was maintained when AWGS 2019, EWGSOP2, and IWGS were applied. In conclusion, CC and SARC-CalF outperformed SARC-F in the diagnostic accuracy of sarcopenia among patients undergoing PD.Due to the role that sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) play in the obesity epidemic, SSB taxes have been enacted in the United States in the California cities of Albany, Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco, as well as in Boulder, Philadelphia, and Seattle. We pooled five years of Nielsen Consumer Panel and Retail Scanner Data (2014-18) to examine purchasing behaviors in and around these cities that have instituted SSB taxes. We included households that were either subject to the tax during the study period or were in surrounding areas within the same state. The goal was to test for the differential impact of SSB taxes by income level and type of tax. Multivariate analyses of beverage purchases found that (1) there is a dose-response relationship with the size of the SSB tax; (2) the Philadelphia tax, which is the only one that includes low-calorie beverages, is associated with greater reductions in SSB purchases and an increase in bottled water purchase; and (3) approximately 72% of the tax is passed through to consumers, but this does not vary by income level of the household. Few income-related effects were detected. Overall, our findings suggest that the Philadelphia model may be the most effective at encouraging healthy habits in beverage choice.Previous studies have suggested a close but inconsistent relationship between essential nutrients and the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and whether this association is causal remains unknown. We aimed to investigate the potential causal relation between essential nutrients (essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, essential minerals, and essential vitamins) and the risk of ALS using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Large-scale European-based genome-wide association studies' (GWASs) summary data related to ALS (assembling 27,205 ALS patients and 110,881 controls) and essential nutrient concentrations were separately obtained. BMS-986020 antagonist MR analysis was performed using the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method, and sensitivity analysis was conducted by the weighted median method, simple median method, MR-Egger method and MR-PRESSO method. We found a causal association between genetically predicted linoleic acid (LA) and the risk of ALS (OR 1.066; 95% CI 1.011-1.125; p = 0.019). An inverse association with ALS risk was noted for vitamin D (OR 0.899; 95% CI 0.819-0.987; p = 0.025) and for vitamin E (OR 0.461; 95% CI 0.340-0.626; p = 6.25 × 10-7). The sensitivity analyses illustrated similar trends. No causal effect was observed between essential amino acids and minerals on ALS. Our study profiled the effects of diet-derived circulating nutrients on the risk of ALS and demonstrated that vitamin D and vitamin E are protective against the risk of ALS, and LA is a suggested risk factor for ALS.
