ation as a phenotypic characterization may assist in genotyping; however, its predictive value on actual illness outcome still requires more research. The Genome-Wide QTL analysis for anxiety trait in the same sample is ongoing.Engineering designers frequently use prototypes to gather input from stakeholders. Design guidelines recommend the use of quick and simple prototypes early and often in a design process. However, the type and quality of a prototype can influence how stakeholders perceive a new design concept and can therefore impact their responses. Additionally, different levels of experience, expertise, and preparedness for providing input to designers may lead stakeholders from different geographical or cultural settings to provide different responses, making the format of a prototype even more influential. Although design practitioners are known to intentionally align their prototyping approach with the specific design question to be answered, it is unclear the extent to which prototyping approaches should vary based on the stakeholders, context, and setting of a design project. To investigate how the format and quality of prototypes influence stakeholders' responses, we conducted a field study with various medical professionals in Ghana. We presented prototypes for a medical device in different formats to stakeholders and collected responses to the design through semi-structured interviews. We found that professional expertise, prototype format, and question type influenced the types of responses that stakeholders provided. These findings suggest that designers seeking input from stakeholders on new concepts should consider context-specific prototyping strategies, especially when designing at distance and across cultures.Transvaginal ultrasound is widely used for ovarian cancer screening but has a high false positive rate. Photoacoustic imaging provides additional optical contrast to supplement ultrasound and might be able to improve the accuracy of screening. Here, we report two copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles types (nanodisks and triangular nanoprisms) as the photoacoustic contrast agents for imaging ovarian cancer. Both CuS nanoprisms and nanodisks were ~6 nm thick and ~26 nm wide and were coated with poly(ethylene glycol) to make them colloidally stable in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) for at least 2 weeks. Sunitinib supplier The CuS nanodisks and nanoprisms revealed strong localized surface plasmon resonances with peak maxima at 1145 nm and 1098 nm, respectively. Both nanoparticles types had strong and stable photoacoustic intensity with detection limits below 120 pM. The circular CuS nanodisk remained in the circulation of nude mice (n=4) and xenograft 2008 ovarian tumors (n=4) 17.9-fold and 1.8-fold more than the triangular nanoprisms, respectively. Finally, the photoacoustic intensity of the tumors from the mice (n=3) treated with CuS nanodisks was 3.0-fold higher than the baseline. The tumors treated with nanodisks had a characteristic peak at 920 nm in the spectrum to potentially differentiate the tumor from adjacent tissues.
COVID-19 is a new human-infecting coronavirus for which the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic. The first Italian cases occurred in February 2020 since then, there has been an exponential increase in new cases, hospitalizations and intensive care assistance demand. This new and sudden scenario led to a forced National Health System reorganization and review of welfare priorities. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of this pandemic on ordinary activities in two plastic surgery divisions in Rome, hosted in a COVID-19 and a non-COVID-19 hospital.
The data of this comparative retrospective study was collected between 9 March and 9 April 2019 and the same period of 2020 from two plastic surgery units, one in a COVID-19 hospital and second in a non-COVID-19 hospital in Rome, Italy. The 2019-2020 data of the two hospitals was compared regarding the number of surgeries, post-operative dressings and first consultations performed.
Both units sustained a decrease in workload due to lockdown effects. Statistically significant differences for day surgery procedures (
value = 0.0047) and first consultations (
value < 0.0001) were found between the COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 institutes, with a drastic trend limiting non-urgent access to COVID-19 hospitals.
The long-term effects of healthcare reshuffling in the "COVID-19 era" imply a delay in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and cancellation of many reconstructive procedures. These findings pose a question on the future consequences of a long-term limitation in plastic surgery healthcare.Level of evidence Level III, risk/prognostic study.

It includes active learning and the dual effect of optimizing policies, whereby optimal policies are used to learn about the stochastics of the dynamic system in addition to their immediate effect on the performance of the system. The OPTCON3 algorithm approximates the nonlinear model with a time-varying linear model and applies a procedure similar to that of Kendrick to the series of linearized models to calculate approximately optimal policies. The results for two simple economic models serve to test the OPTCON3 algorithm and compare it to previous solutions of the stochastic control problem. Initial evaluations show that the OPTCON3 approach may be promising to enhance our understanding of the adaptive economic policy problem under uncertainty.The concept of similarity is used as the basis for many data exploration and data mining tasks. Nearest neighbor (NN) queries identify the most similar items, or in terms of distance the closest points to a query point. Similarity is traditionally characterized using a distance function between multi-dimensional feature vectors. However, when the data is high-dimensional, traditional distance functions fail to significantly distinguish between the closest and furthest points, as few dissimilar dimensions dominate the distance function. Localized similarity functions, i.e. functions that only consider dimensions close to the query, quantize each dimension independently and only compute similarity for the dimensions where the query and the points fall into the same bin. These quantizations are query-agnostic and there is potential to improve accuracy when a query-dependent quantization is used. In this work we propose a query dependent equi-depth (QED) on-the-fly quantization method to improve high-dimensional similarity searches. The quantization is done for each dimension at query time and localized scores are generated for the closest p fraction of the points while a constant penalty is applied for the rest of the points. QED not only improves the quality of the distancemetric,but also improves query time performance by filtering out non relevant data. We propose a distributed indexing and query algorithm to efficiently compute QED. Our experimental results show improvements in classification accuracy as well as query performance up to one order of magnitude faster than Manhattan-based sequential scan NN queries over datasets with hundreds of dimensions. Furthermore, similarity searches with QED show linear or better scalability in relation to the number of dimensions, and the number of compute nodes.This study reveals a new microfluidic biosensor consisting of a multi-constriction microfluidic device with embedded electrodes for measuring the biophysical attributes of single cells. The biosensing platform called the iterative mechano-electrical properties (iMEP) analyzer captures electronic records of biomechanical and bioelectrical properties of cells. The iMEP assay is used in conjunction with standard migration assays, such as chemotaxis-based Boyden chamber and scratch wound healing assays, to evaluate the migratory behavior and biophysical properties of prostate cancer cells. The three cell lines evaluated in the study each represent a stage in the standard progression of prostate cancer, while the fourth cell line serves as a normal/healthy counterpart. Neither the scratch assay nor the chemotaxis assay could fully differentiate the four cell lines. Furthermore, there was not a direct correlation between wound healing rate or the migratory rate with the cells' metastatic potential. However, the iMEP assay, through its multiparametric dataset, could distinguish between all four cell line populations with p-value less then 0.05. Further studies are needed to determine if iMEP signatures can be used for a wider range of human cells to assess the tumorigenicity of a cell population or the metastatic potential of cancer cells.Due to the lack of specific early detection methods for pancreatic cancer, it usually goes undetected until it is advanced. By employing paper-based electrodes (PPE), herein we for the first time developed a disposable low-cost paper-based immunosensor for rapid early quantitative detection of pancreatic cancer with a new biomarker, pseudopodium-enriched atypical kinase one, SGK269 (PEAK1). The immunosensor was constructed by fabricating PPEs immobilized with the versatile nanomaterial graphene oxide for the incorporation of antibodies to form an immunosensing platform, without the need of complicated surface modification. After it was confirmed that the PPEs exhibited excellent electrochemical properties, a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was subsequently constructed by employing graphene oxide layers immobilized with anti-PEAK1, and the antibody conjugated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs-tagged-Anti PEAK1). Further, spectral and surface characteristic studies confirmed the formation of the immunosensing platform. The immunosensor for PEAK1 exhibited a wide linear range between 10 pg mL-1 and 106 pg mL-1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 10 pg mL-1. The obtained results point towards rapid, sensitive, and specific early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer at the point of care and other low-resource settings.Quantitative analysis using thin-layer chromatography coupled in tandem with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (TLC-SERS) still remains a grand challenge due to many uncontrollable variations during the TLC developing process and the random nature of the SERS substrates. Traditional chemometric methods solve this problem by sampling multiple SERS spectra in the sensing spot and then conducting statistical analysis of the SERS signals to mitigate the variation of quantitative analysis, while still ignoring the spatial distribution of the target species and the correlation among the multiple sampling points. In this paper, we proposed for the first time a parallel feature extraction and fusion method based on quaternion signal processing techniques, which can enable quantitative analysis using recently established TLC-SERS techniques. By marking three deterministic sampling points, we recorded spatially correlated SERS spectra to constitute an integral representation model of triple-spectra by a pure quaternion matrix.
