Rugal hyperplastic gastritis (RHG) is associated with Lauren's diffuse-type gastric cancer (GC) and the accompanying active inflammation is linked to gastric hypoacidity. We tried to establish the steps for identifying high-risk GC patients.
We included 196 patients with confirmed Helicobacter pylori infection by rapid urease test during screening endoscopy for health check-up from January 2016 to September 2016; all patients underwent blood tests for pepsinogen I and II and fasting serum gastrin. We compared RHG findings with various other endoscopic mucosal images. We also evaluated the relationships between RHG and other mucosal aspects for a given acid status based on serological markers.
Hypoacid and ultra-low-acid (67%) statuses were dominant, with only 18% hyperacid patients. RHG with high acid was related to a less atrophic body type (p=0.001), and RHG with ultra-low acid was associated with body xanthoma (p=0.029) and increased serum gastrin level (p=0.038). However, RHG's influence on gastric acidity was only seen in closed-type endoscopic atrophic border (EAB), not in open type (p=0.001).

The small AgNP (3 nm) as a stable source of silver ions, their crystal form, and homogeneous distribution in the whole solid membrane were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger analysis were applied to investigate the elemental composition, concentration, and chemical state of surface atoms. It was found that ultra-small metallic nanoparticles might form a steady source of silver ions and enhance the biostatic properties of solid membranes. Ultra-small AgNP with disturbed electronic structure and plasmonic properties may generate interaction between amine groups of the biopolymer for improving the homogeneity of the nanometallic layer. Tumor-bearing mice were divided into two groups by systematic injection with urokinase plasminogen activator receptor-targeted (n = 7) and nontargeted (n = 5) imaging nanoprobes as a contrast agent, respectively. Each mouse was imaged at 6, 24, and 48 h following the injection of nanoprobes using the FMT endoscope. The results show that systemic delivery of targeted nanoprobes produced a 4-fold enhancement in fluorescence signals from tumors, compared with tumors that received nontargeted nanoprobes. This study indicates that our miniaturized FMT endoscope, coupled with the targeted nanoparticle-NIR dye conjugates as a contrast agent, has high sensitivity and specificity, and thus great potential to be used for image-guided detection and removal of a primary tumor and local metastatic tumors during surgery.Environmental exposure to low concentrations of heavy metals is common in the general population, but the toxicity, immune response mechanisms, and the effects of single and mixed metal exposures have not been clearly identified. In this study, A549 cells and Raw264.7 cells were exposed to low concentrations of the heavy metals nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd) for 24, 48, and 72 h, and then cell viability and cytokine levels were analyzed. We found that exposure to low concentrations of Ni (50 nM) or Cd (10 nM) alone did not affect cell viability. However, mixing them together decreased cell viability. In addition, the levels of IL-10, IL-12, and TNF-α decreased with single (only Cd) and mixed (Ni and Cd) exposures. These results show that exposure to low concentrations of heavy metals could affect the normal immune response, even without obvious clinical manifestations. Therefore, chronic exposure to heavy metals might have adverse effects on overall health.
