Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been associated with impairment of cognitive functions. Since the majority of patients with diabetes in the Saudi population are between the ages of 40 and 69 years, it is crucial to ascertain whether the control of blood glucose level negatively correlates with the level of cognitive function scores similar to the way it correlates in those who are not controlling their blood glucose level with medications.

To assess cognitive functions in patients with T2DM and examine the effect of glycemic control on cognitive functions impairment in Saudi adults with T2DM.

Seventy-nine patients with T2DM underwent cognitive assessment testing using the Cambridge neuropsychological test automated battery (CANTAB), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Fatigue severity scale. Their cognitive function scores were then correlated with their blood glucose levels, duration of diabetes, and levels of education. Poor glycemic control was defined as glycated hemoglobin levels more thas and their glycemic control. Patients with uncontrolled T2DM showed decreased cognitive scores. Moreover, worsened cognitive scores were associated with longer disease duration.

Patients with T2DM have a statistically significant association between their cognitive functions and their glycemic control. Patients with uncontrolled T2DM showed decreased cognitive scores. Moreover, worsened cognitive scores were associated with longer disease duration. In this study, we attempt to look into the cointegration and causal link of oil and food prices in the sample countries that are both food importing and oil exporting economies. Yearly data sets of 21 countries were used and the paper covers a time period of 2001-2015. The stationarity property of I(0) and I(I) of the variables informed the use of panel ARDL model. The short period analysis shows negative effects between food prices and oil price while positive effects exist in the long period. The causality result of the sample country shows that causality runs from food prices to oil price. The result implies that appropriate agricultural policies that promote favourable food prices and alternative energy options should be pursued in the countries to ensure sustained food and oil supply.Protracted and prolonged droughts lead to famine and substantial decline in agricultural productivity that contribute to food insecurity and hunger in sub-Saharan Africa which needs to explore the risk coping strategies to better target risk mitigation. The main research question of this paper was to analyze ex-post coping strategies and their determinants in rural Ethiopia. We use a cross-section data collected in 2013 from vulnerable rural households in Rayitu district, Bale Zone of Oromia Regional State. Using population-proportionate to size (PPS) sampling technique, a total number of 1,402 households in the district participated in this study. The data were analyzed using a three-stage least squares (3SLS) method. Our analysis confirms that rural households in Rayitu district experience drought and are vulnerable to the consequences of shocks. As a response, rural households adopt interdependent risk coping strategies. This supports the notion of addressing the problem of risk through integrated rural development strategies (and policies) to help the poor to improve the vulnerability to shock and help to escape out of poverty. In addition, we found that the risk coping strategies that households adopt are influenced by the resource holdings and income levels of the rural households, their access to product and financial market, and their socio-demographic characteristics. Hence, we argue that strategies and interventions to improve the livelihood of the poor and to support the vulnerable ones should be targeted to fit to the needs and priorities of households.Metabolism and in vitro fungitoxicity of perinaphthenone against three economically important fungi of the citrus, Botryodiplodia spp., Botrytis spp. and Fusarium spp. were investigated. Perinaphthenone exhibited significant antifungal activity at 62.5 μM and above. Even, the inhibitory effect against Fusarium spp. was significantly enhanced by exposure to direct light. In addition, the metabolism of perinaphthenone by the three fungi was studied. Results show that perinaphthenone was transformed almost completely during the first 24 h; two major products, whose concentration increased progressively during the twelve days of the test, were isolated and identified as 2,3-dihydro-1H-phenalen-1-ol and 2,3-dihydro-phenalen-1-one. Although both metabolic products displayed a considerable fungistatic effect, their slightly lower activities in comparison to perinaphthenone indicate that the transformation was a detoxification process. Almorexant price Studies on the relationship between the effect of some substituents in the perinaphthenone core and the mycelial growth inhibition of Botryodiplodia spp. were also carried out. Results show that the α, β-unsaturated carbonyl system is an important structural requirement but not the only to be necessary for the strong antifungal activity of perinaphthenone. In general, the antifungal properties of perinaphthenone may be modulated through the incorporation of substituents in the naphthalene core or in the α, β-unsaturated carbonyl system. It is concluded that perinaphthenone could be used as an antifungal agent or as a structural template for the development of new fungicide compounds. In the backdrop of an abundance of lignin in jute, the main focus of the present study was to conduct a quality assessment of four delignified jute lines (in which four lignin biosynthetic genes were individually downregulated) across advanced generations for industrial applications. To this end, the transgenic lines were advanced to 7th (COMT and C4H lines) and 5th (C3H and F5H lines) transformed generations. The results exhibit approximately 16-25% reduction in acid-insoluble lignin for the whole stem and 13-14% reduction in fiber lignin content for all four transgenic lines compared to the control. The altered lignin composition led to a 3-6% increase in the cellulose content and a small improvement in the enzymatic release of glucose. Lignin reduction led to an exposure of the underlying fibrils in transgenic lines as observed through a scanning electron microscope whereas, it was undiscernible in the control fiber. Furthermore, an analysis of the mechanical properties appears almost similar to that of the control with no morphological deformities.
