The critical laser radiation power was demonstrated simultaneously to cause complete denaturation of collagen (as indicated by the DSC data) and coagulation necrosis of all the three venous wall layers, total homogenization of the tissue and obliteration of vasa vasorum (as indicated by the histological analysis data). Lower laser radiation powers fail to produce these effects. Critical laser power provides the desired result of the thermal effect on the vein ex vivo, namely, tissue necrosis and vasa vasorum destruction. read more The complete degradation of the collagen recorded by DSC could be a marker of the irreversible destruction of the vein wall in modeling of endoluminal thermal treatment. Most illnesses and deaths in industry workers are associated with occupational diseases (ODs). In recent years, mining has grown rapidly into a major driver of the Mongolian economy. In this study, the organization-based registry data on OD incidence and mortality from the archival data of the 'Erdenet' Copper and Molybdenum Concentrator Plant in Mongolia were used. We estimated the ODs burden in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) loss between 1999 and 2019. A total of 72,802 DALYs were lost over 20 years, of which 97.5% were due to years lived with disability and 2.5% for years of life lost. The disease burden was high in men, accounting for 76.8% of total DALY. In terms of age groups, among people aged 46-55, DALY accounted for the largest percentage of losses. We found that workplace dust, noise, ergonomics, and vibration were the main factors attributed to the DALYs during the past two decades.Correct identification of the substance basis of Pseudostellariae Radix (PR) odor is important not only for the quality control of the products, but also for the safety of the consumers. PR is often described with a special smell, such as strange, moldy or earthy. Electronic nose-based technology coupled with headspace solid phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was used to investigate the volatile components in PR from 47 germplasms cultivated in traditional fields. A total of 48 common compounds were identified based on HS- SPME-GC-MS technology, and 25 of them with aroma characteristics were found based on Alpha soft 13.4. The 1-Octen-3-ol, geosim, (E)-2-nonenal and 1- methylnaphthalene as contributing marker compounds of the 'specific smell' of PR were identified. The odor recognition mode, with demonstrated excellent accuracy in recognition abilities, enabled the correct identification of commercial samples including complex mixtures. We report a case of Becker muscular dystrophy in a 6-month-old, mixed-breed, castrated male pig detected with macroglossia at a meat inspection center. The pig presented a severely enlarged tongue extending outside its mouth. The tongue was firm and pale with discolored muscles. Histologically, there was severe fibrosis, fatty replacement, and myofiber necrosis, degeneration, and regeneration. Immunofluorescence showed focal and severely weak labeling for dystrophin at the sarcolemma of myocytes in the tongue. Analysis of dystrophin mRNA showed a 62 base pair insertion between exons 26 and 27. The insertion was derived from intron 26. Based on these findings, we diagnosed the case as Becker muscular dystrophy-the first known muscular dystrophy case induced by pseudoexon insertion in animals. One new isoindolinone lactam lithocarlactam A (1) and one new triterpene lithocarin D (2), along with nine known natural products (3-11) were isolated from the broth extract of marine fungus Phomopsis lithocarpus FS508, which was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample. Their structures were elucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic analysis and comparison with previously published literatures for the known compounds. Moreover, compounds 1 and 2 were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against SF-268, MCF-7, HepG-2, and A549 cell lines. However, both of them showed no activity against the tumor cell lines. Two new cycloartanes, combretic acid C (1) and combretanone I (3), were isolated from the leaves of Combretum quadrangulare Kurz, together with the previously-reported combretic acids A-B (2 and 5) and combretanone A (4). An extensive set of spectroscopic methods were used to elucidate the structures of these compounds. Cytotoxicity against the K562 cancer cell line was evaluated. Compound 1 showed strong activity, with an IC50 value of 9.7 µM. The other compounds showed moderate activity. Alpha-glucosidase inhibition was also evaluated. The isolated compounds showed moderate inhibition, with IC50 values in the range 102.2-194.7 µM.
This study aimed to demonstrate the necessary walking skills for community ambulation of individuals with chronic stroke using a validated community ambulation survey.
A total of 107 older adults and 99 ambulatory, urban-living people with chronic stroke were sampled by convenience method. A community ambulation survey was developed to establish content and concurrent validity. Using the survey, older adults and individuals with stroke documented the frequency with which walking tasks were performed throughout the day.
The survey was valid for clinical use (kappa coefficients ranging from 0.737 to 0.873). Compared with those encountered by the older adult group, walking tasks less frequently performed by the stroke group included the use of revolving doors, navigating stairs, walking through crossways, carrying and manipulating objects, and walking at a fast pace and for long distances. Participants in the stroke group used automatic doors to enter buildings and walked through underpasses to pass crosswg in the community.Implications for rehabilitationCommunity ambulation survey is appropriate to identify the challenging walking tasks that people with chronic stroke show less participation in community.People with chronic stroke showed less frequent participation in walking tasks such as using stairs, using crossways, carrying objects, and walking fast and long distances, which are challenging for them.To achieve the final goal of stroke rehabilitation, it is necessary to repeatedly practice challenging walking tasks in a routine rehabilitation schedule. This paper uses the internet-based biosurveillance to describe the Brazilian e-commerce of non-inspected dairy products and maps its traditional sale in a medium-sized city (Londrina). We searched the sales of illegal dairy products on Facebook Marketplace and conducted a census of street markets and a random sample of formal markets. Although prohibited in Brazil, consumers can easily find informal dairy products on internet and retail sale. In addition, 7% of the food products hold a false label to mimic food inspection. The e-commerce was linked with regions with higher access to technology and Human Development Index (HDI). We believe that our approach shows a step forward in the public health interventions and could be replicated stimulating debates about policies required to improve the public health surveillance.
The need to effectively communicate HIV/AIDS prevention messages in Libya, where HIV prevalence is relatively low yet increasing, cannot be overstressed. A review of the literature on HIV prevalence, risk factors, stigma and awareness found that there is a lack of HIV research, information and support in the country. This is particularly true regarding women, who account for 25%-30% of people living with HIV in Libya.
Drawing on the various literature, this narrative review will (1) present a historical trajectory of Libyan women and their role in society and (2) identify some challenges that HIV prevention programmes face in reaching Libyan women.
Medline, PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Cochrane Library were searched for English and Arabic language articles. Primary research studies and official reports indicating a discussion or research on HIV in Libya and Libyan women were considered. Reference lists of articles were reviewed to identify additional studies. Thirty-seven articles den carried out in Libya may be compromised as they were not designed to recognize and adhere to sociocultural norms that impact on Libyan women's scope for choice and agency. By understanding the interplay between gender, social and structural factors in Libya, a model of better adjusted prevention and early intervention activities could be developed; a toolkit that conceptualizes the culture and that appreciates the role of a Libyan woman is changing. The present study evaluated the antibacterial potential of endophytic fungi isolated from Dillenia indica L. and identified bioactive compounds responsible for their antimicrobial activity. A total of twenty-five endophytic fungi were preliminarily screened for their antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria, i.e., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis by dual culture assay. The strains having antibacterial activity were selected and crude extracts were prepared from them. The crude extracts were screened for antibacterial activity by agar well diffusion assay. The ethyl acetate extract of Fomitopsis meliae showed the highest activity against selected human pathogenic bacteria, with a zone of inhibition ranging from 15 to 29 mm. The Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the ethyl acetate extract of F. meliae showed the presence of 40 compounds with predominance of Dodecane (8.87%), Ethyl 2-thiopheneacetate (4.12%), Tetradecane (13.86%), Hexadecane (12.05%), Octadecane (6.67%), Benzaldehyde, 4-(1-methylethyl)- (10.83%), Griseofulvin (3.31%).The advent of proteolysis-targeting chimaeras (PROTACs) mandates that new ligands for the recruitment of E3 ligases are discovered. The traditional immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) such as thalidomide and its analogues (all based on the phthalimide glutarimide core) bind to Cereblon, the substrate receptor of the CRL4ACRBN E3 ligase. We designed a thalidomide analogue in which the phthalimide moiety was replaced with benzotriazole, using an innovative synthesis strategy. Compared to thalidomide, the resulting "benzotriazolo thalidomide" has a similar binding mode, but improved properties, as revealed in crystallographic analyses, affinity assays and cell culture. This note is intended to try to shed light on the discoveries made entitled "Biologging is suspect to cause corneal opacity in two populations of wild living Northern Bald Ibises (Geronticus eremita)". In this article, researchers participating in a reintroduction program for this endangered species in Europe document the unilateral corneal opacity that took place after birds were equipped with solar radio transmitters fixed on their upper-back position. The authors propose several possible effects caused by the device to explain the problem, and they conclude that the most parsimonious explanation for the symptomatology is a repetitive slight temperature rise in the corneal tissue due to electromagnetic radiation by the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) module of the device. The proposal of this communication is that these effects do not necessarily have to be thermal, but they can be non-thermal and thus more subtle and insidious. These effects may be caused by electromagnetic radiation at low levels but in long-term exposure.
