This study aims to quantify how frugivory influences activity budgets across age-sex classes of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. MATERIALS AND METHODS Daily proportions of fruit-feeding and activity budgets were calculated using 6 years of observational data on four habituated groups. We fitted generalized linear mixed models to test for age-sex differences in the amount of fruit-feeding, and to test whether these factors influence the proportion of time spent feeding, resting, and traveling. RESULTS Bwindi mountain gorillas spent on average 15% of feeding time consuming fruit, with monthly variation ranging from 0 to 70%. Greater amounts of fruit-feeding were associated with more time feeding and traveling, and less time resting. Immatures tended to spend more feeding time on fruit than adults, but less overall time feeding and more time traveling. There were no significant differences in the amount of fruit-feeding and overall feeding time between adult females and silverback males, despite differences in body size. DISCUSSION This study confirms that gorillas are frugivorous, and only the Virunga mountain gorilla population can be characterized as highly folivorous. Along with other frugivorous great apes, Bwindi mountain gorillas alter their activity patterns in response to varying amounts of fruit in their diet. A better understanding of how variable ecological conditions can drive diversity even within a subspecies has important implications for understanding relationships between ecology, body size, and foraging strategies in great apes. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.PURPOSE Sparse-data CT frequently occurs, such as breast tomosynthesis, C-arm CT, on-board 4D CBCT, and industrial CT. However, sparse-data image reconstruction remains challenging due to highly undersampled data. This work develops a data-driven image reconstruction method for sparse-data CT using deep neural networks (DNN). METHODS The new method so-called AirNet is designed to incorporate the benefits from analytical reconstruction method (AR), iterative reconstruction method (IR), and DNN. It is built upon fused analytical and iterative reconstruction (AIR) that synergizes AR and IR via the optimization framework of modified proximal forward-backward splitting (PFBS). By unrolling PFBS into IR updates of CT data fidelity and DNN regularization with residual learning, AirNet utilizes AR such as FBP during the data fidelity, introduces dense connectivity into DNN regularization, and learns PFBS coefficients and DNN parameters that minimize the loss function during the training stage. And then AirNet with treconstruction quality both visually and quantitatively among all methods under comparison for all sparse-data scenarios (sparse-view and limited-angle), and provided the best photon and proton treatment plan quality based on sparse-data CT. However, a high false-positive rate of fetal acidosis indicated by CTG leads to an increase in obstetric interventions. We developed a microdialysis probe that is integrated into a fetal scalp electrode allowing continuous measurement of lactate subcutaneously, thus giving instant information about the oxygenation status of the fetus. Our aim was to establish proof of concept in an animal model using a microdialysis probe to monitor lactate subcutaneously. MATERIAL AND METHODS We performed an in vivo study in adult male wild-type Wistar rats. We modified electrodes used for CTG monitoring in human fetuses to incorporate a microdialysis membrane. Optimum flow rates for microdialysis were determined in vitro. For the in vivo experiment, a microdialysis probe was inserted into the skin on the back of the animal. We revisited pioneering data sets collected at the deciduous forested Horonai Stream and conducted ecosystem-level syntheses to demonstrate that the direction of direct and indirect interactions can change depending on the timescale of observation. Prior experimental studies showed that terrestrial prey that enter the stream from the adjacent forest caused positive indirect effects on aquatic invertebrates during summer by diverting fish consumption. Seasonal and annual estimates of secondary production and organic matter flows along food web pathway demonstrate that this seasonal input of terrestrial invertebrate prey increases production of certain fish species, reversing the indirect effect on aquatic invertebrates from positive at the seasonal time scale to negative at the annual time scale. Even though terrestrial invertebrate prey contributed 54% of the annual organic matter flux to fishes, primarily during summer, fish still consumed 98% of the aquatic invertebrate annual production, leading to top-down control that is not revealed in short-term experiments and demonstrating that aquatic prey may be a limiting resource for fishes.
