Competitions are part and parcel of daily life and require people to invest time and energy to gain advantage over others and to avoid (the risk of ) falling behind. Whereas the behavioral mechanisms underlying competition are well documented, its neurocognitive underpinnings remain poorly understood. We addressed this using neuroimaging and computational modeling of individual investment decisions aimed at exploiting one's counterpart ("attack") or at protecting against exploitation by one's counterpart ("defense"). Analyses revealed that during attack relative to defense (i) individuals invest less and are less successful; (ii) computations of expected reward are strategically more sophisticated (reasoning level k = 4 vs. k = 3 during defense); (iii) reward prediction errors track ventral striatum activity; (iv) risk prediction errors were not correlated with neural activity in either ROI or whole-brain analyses; and (v) successful exploitation correlated with neural activity in the bilateral ventral striatum, left OFC, left anterior insula, left TPJ, and lateral occipital cortex. VcMMAE We conclude that, in economic contests, coming out ahead (vs. not falling behind) involves sophisticated strategic reasoning that engages both reward and value computation areas and areas associated with theory of mind.Sudan III is a coloring agent used in chemical industries and food additives. This article uses spectroscopic and molecular docking methods to investigate the interaction of Sudan III with bovine serum albumin (BSA) under a physiological condition. Spectroscopic analysis of the emission quenching revealed that the quenching mechanism of BSA by Sudan III was static. The binding sites and constants of Sudan III-BSA complex were observed to be from 0.72 and 6.41 × 102 L·mol-1 to 0.69 and 5.83 × 102 L·mol-1 at 298 and 310 K, respectively. The enthalpy change (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) revealed that van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds stabilized the Sudan III-BSA complex. Energy transfer from tryptophan to Sudan III occurred by a fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism, and the r distance (3.32 nm) had been determined. The results of UV-Vis absorption, synchronous, three-dimensional fluorescence, and circular dichroism spectra showed that Sudan III induced conformational changes of BSA. Molecular docking studies revealed that Sudan III situated within subdomain IIA of BSA. A study on the interaction between Sudan III and BSA was of fundamental importance for providing more information about the potential toxicological effect of chemicals at the molecular level.Purpose Theoretical models and substantial research have proposed that general auditory sensitivity is a developmental foundation for speech perception and language acquisition. Nonetheless, controversies exist about the effectiveness of general auditory training in improving speech and language skills. This research investigated the relationships among general auditory sensitivity, phonemic speech perception, and word-level speech perception via the examination of pitch and lexical tone perception in children. Method Forty-eight typically developing 4- to 6-year-old Cantonese-speaking children were tested on the discrimination of the pitch patterns of lexical tones in synthetic stimuli, discrimination of naturally produced lexical tones, and identification of lexical tone in familiar words. Results The findings revealed that accurate lexical tone discrimination and identification did not necessarily entail the accurate discrimination of nonlinguistic stimuli that followed the pitch levels and pitch shapes of lexical tones. Although pitch discrimination and tone discrimination abilities were strongly correlated, accuracy in pitch discrimination was lower than that in tone discrimination, and nonspeech pitch discrimination ability did not precede linguistic tone discrimination in the developmental trajectory. Conclusions Contradicting the theoretical models, the findings of this study suggest that general auditory sensitivity and speech perception may not be causally or hierarchically related. The finding that accuracy in pitch discrimination is lower than that in tone discrimination suggests that comparable nonlinguistic auditory perceptual ability may not be necessary for accurate speech perception and language learning. The results cast doubt on the use of nonlinguistic auditory perceptual training to improve children's speech, language, and literacy abilities.Purpose Relative fundamental frequency (RFF) is an acoustic measure that is sensitive to functional voice differences in adults. The aim of the current study was to evaluate RFF in children, as there are known structural and functional differences between the pediatric and adult vocal mechanisms. Method RFF was analyzed in 28 children with vocal fold nodules (CwVN, M = 9.0 years) and 28 children with typical voices (CwTV, M = 8.9 years). RFF is the instantaneous fundamental frequency (f 0) of the 10 vocalic cycles during devoicing (vocal offset) and 10 vocalic cycles during the revoicing (vocal onset) of the vowels that surround a voiceless consonant. Each cycle's f 0 was normalized to a steady-state portion of the vowel. RFF values for the cycles closest to the voiceless consonant, that is, Offset Cycle 10 and Onset Cycle 1, were examined. Results Average RFF values for Offset Cycle 10 and Onset Cycle 1 did not differ between CwVN and CwTV; however, within-subject variability of Offset Cycle 10 was decreased in CwVN. Across both groups, male children had lower Offset Cycle 10 RFF values as compared to female children. Additionally, Onset Cycle 1 values were decreased in younger children as compared to those of older children. Conclusions Unlike previous work with adults, CwVN did not have significantly different RFF values than CwTV. Younger children had lower RFF values for Onset Cycle 1 than older children, suggesting that vocal onset f 0 may provide information on the maturity of the laryngeal motor system.Introduction Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is characterized by widespread erythema and edema, superficial sterile coalescing pustules, and lakes of pus. Although the impact of GPP is thought to be substantial, emerging literature on its clinical, humanistic, and economic burden has not previously been described in a structured way.Areas covered A structured search focused on the identification of studies in GPP using specific search terms in PubMed and EMBASE® from 2005 onwards, with additional back-referencing and pragmatic searches. Outcomes of interest included clinical, humanistic, and economic burden.Expert opinion Despite its significant clinical, humanistic, and economic burden, GPP is poorly classified and inadequately studied. A recent European (ERASPEN) consensus classifies GPP into relapsing and persistent disease and classifies patients on the presence or absence of psoriasis vulgaris. Classification of GPP lesions involving >30% body surface area or use of hospitalization as a surrogate may be a way to identify significant flares.
