Loeys-Dietz (LDS) syndromes (types 1-5) are autosomal dominant conditions with pathogenic variants in TGFβR1, TGFβR2, SMAD3, TGFβ2 and TGFβ3 that affect the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and craniofacial systems. Aortic root dissection is a major cause of mortality in these individuals. Aortic root dilation is often present in childhood and may be recognized in utero. KGaA, Weinheim.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent an emerging class of π-conjugated molecules in the area of optoelectronic devices and materials. Unprecedented synthetic routes to various PAHs from simple phenol derivatives by a palladium-catalyzed annulative dimerization of phenylene triflate through twofold inter- and intramolecular C-H activation have been established. The initially formed partially fused PAHs can be smoothly transformed into a variety of fully fused PAHs by the Scholl reaction. Furthermore, the reactions of phenanthrene-substituted aryl triflates proceeded regioselectively. The findings inspired the development of a rapid and efficient synthesis of polybenzoacene derivatives. This study not only allows transformation of phenyl triflates, but also discloses a new retrosynthetic strategy towards PAHs, especially polybenzoacenes. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.BACKGROUND The present study aimed to investigated the expression pattern of long noncoding RNA LINC00858 (LINC00858) in gastric cancer (GC) patients and its feasibility as a new prognostic biomarker. selleck chemicals llc METHODS We examined LINC00858 expression in GC tissues and matched normal tissues from 189 patients using a quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The correlations of LINC00858 levels in GC patients with clinicopathologic features were analyzed using a chi-squared test. The influence of LINC00858 on the overall survival rate of GC patients was precisely calculated using Kaplan-Meier methods (log rank tests). Multivariate Cox regression assays were carried out for the identification of the independent risk factors for GC. RESULTS We observed that LINC00858 was distinctly up-regulated in GC tissues compared to adjacent non-tumor specimens (p less then 0.01). Higher expression of LINC00858 in GC was found to be associated with TNM stage (p = 0.003) and lymphatic metastasis (p = 0.007). Using Kaplan-Meier assays, we found that patients with high expression levels of LINC00858 had a distinctly poor overall survival and disease-free survival compared to those with low expression levels of LINC00858 (p = 0.0102). Multivariate analyses confirmed that LINC00858 (p less then 0.05) was an independent prognosis factor for GC patients. KGaA, Weinheim.AIMS To evaluate the reliability of different methods to normalize pelvic floor muscles (PFM) electromyography (EMG). METHODS Thirty nulliparous women (23.9 ± 3.2 years), free from PFM dysfunction, completed two test sessions 7 days apart. For EMG normalization, signals were acquired during four different tasks using a vaginal probe in situ PFM maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and three daily activities with increased intra-abdominal pressure (coughing, Valsalva maneuver, and abdominal contraction). The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), relative standard error of measurement (%SEM), and minimal detectable change (MDC) were calculated for each variable. RESULTS ICC values for test-retest reliability of normalization methods ranged from 0.61 to 0.95. The highest values were obtained for mean root mean square (RMS) of the abdominal contraction and peak RMS of PFM-MVC. Normalization using RMS of PFM-MVC showed the lowest values of SEM and MDC. CONCLUSIONS The normalization of EMG data is considered a fundamental part of EMG investigations. These findings suggest that the normalization of PFM-EMG by either peak RMS of PFM-MVC or mean and peak RMS of abdominal contraction has excellent reliability and it can be applied in studies involving the evaluation of young women. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Around 2% of cutaneous neoplasms arise in the scalp (scalp tumors STs). They can be classified as primary STs (epithelial, melanocytic, adnexal) or metastastatic (from distal tumors or as a spreading from contiguous structures). This anatomic location is usually poorly examined during dermatological consultations, also due to the presence of the hair cover. Moreover, self-examination of the hair-covered skin is often harder for the patient. The peculiar features of the scalp may explain the worse prognosis of STs compared to neoplasms of other locations. The hair coverage protects the scalp from UV radiations, but due to the complex pathogenesis of STs, they may also develop in younger patients. Until now, STs have been not extensively investigated in the dermatological literature, and most publications are written by otolaryngologists, or by head, neck and plastic surgeons. Thus, dermatologists above all have the opportunity and the task to explore the scalp carefully, with the opportunity to make an early diagnosis, possibly changing the patient's prognosis.
