Calcium phosphate cements (CPC) are widely anticipated to be an optimum bone repair substitute due to its satisfied biocompatibility and degradability, suitable to be used in minimally invasive treatment of bone defects. However the clinical application of CPC is still not satisfied by its poor cohesiveness and mechanical properties, in particular its osteoinductivity. Hyaluronic acid reinforced calcium phosphate cements (HA/CPC) showed extroadinary potential not only enhancing the compressive strength of the cements but also significantly increasing its osteoinductivity. In our study, the compressive strength of HA/CPC increased significantly when the cement was added 1% hyaluronic acid (denoted as 1-HA/CPC). In the meantime, hyaluronic acid obviously promoted ALP activity, osteogenic related protein and mRNA expression of hBMSCs (human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells) in vitro, cement group of HA/CPC with 4% hyaluronic acid adding (denoted as 4-HA/CPC) showed optimal enhancement in hBMSCs differentiation. After being implanted in rat tibial defects, 4-HA/CPC group exhibited better bone repair ability and bone growth promoting factors, comparing to pure CPC and 1-HA/CPC groups. The underlying biological mechanism of this stimulation for HA/CPC may be on account of higher osteogenic promoting factors secretion and osteogenic genes expression with hyaluronic acid incorporation. These results indicate that hyaluronic acid is a highly anticipated additive to improve physicochemical properties and osteoinductivity performance of CPCs for minimally invasive healing of bone defects.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been declared a global public-health crisis due to its impact on health, economy, and mental well-being. Here, we evaluated the clinical and epidemiological parameters associated with COVID-19 in South India.
A retrospective, quaternary care hospital-based study that included COVID-19 positive patients admitted to MIOT International Hospital, Chennai between 8 April-7 August 2020. Cases were identified by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, and radiological findings were recorded and analyzed. 17-AAG solubility dmso The primary endpoint was stable discharge from hospital/patient recovery or death. Associations between risk factors and comorbidities were analyzed using Chi-Square/Fisher's exact test.
Of the 5264 cases reviewed, 3345 cases were included. The mean (standard deviation, SD) age of the patients was 47.58 (16.69) years with a median and range hospital stay of 5 (2-41) days. 69.20% of patients were male. The most frequent comorbidities were diabetes (37.10%) and hypertension (29.10%). Contact history was available for 58% of patients. The most common symptoms were cough (36.60%), fever (28.30%), and myalgia (15.40%). Abnormal chest radiography was reported in 16.9% of patients. Phase of admission, age ≥50 years, hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease was significantly associated with mortality (p<0.05). There were 142 (4.2%) deaths in this study.
In this single centre hospital-based study, late presentation and more severe form of COVID pneumonia lead to higher mortality although it had lower mortality rate for COVID-19 in comparison. Late phase of the pandemic showed better outcomes vs. the early group.

To report a case in which an internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap that was used to cover an idiopathic macular hole (MH) during pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with the inverted internal limiting membrane flap technique partially detached from the retina. Most interestingly, the flap fell back spontaneously to re-cover the MH.
A 70-year-old woman presented with a full-thickness MH, and her vision was 20/400. She underwent PPV with an inverted ILM flap and air tamponade. When the intraocular gas was absorbed, the ILM flap detached but was held to the retina where it had not been peeled and the MH was open. Her visual acuity at this time was 20/400. The patient did not want further treatment and was followed by observation alone. At three months after the initial surgery, the ILM flap was noted to have spontaneously re-covered the MH, and her visual acuity improved to 20/200. At 6 months after the re-covering, the flap remained over the MH and the visual acuity remained at 20/200.
Surgeons should be aware that it is possible for an ILM flap created by the inverted ILM flap technique to partially detach from the retina after the tamponade gas is resorbed. Most importantly, the flap can return to re-cover the MH spontaneously.

The aim of this report was to describe a case of cataract surgery and Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) after cytomegalovirus (CMV) corneal endotheliitis and bullous keratopathy (BK) following immunosuppressive treatment for Mooren's ulcer.
A 64-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of peripheral ulcerative keratitis in his left eye. He had a history of trabeculectomy for open angle glaucoma in his left eye. He was diagnosed with Mooren's ulcer and treated with topical betamethasone and tacrolimus with systemic cyclosporine. The corneal ulcer improved, but the peripheral cornea thinned from 6 to 12 and 0-2 o'clock. Five months later, cells were observed in the left anterior chamber, and real-time polymerase chain reaction examination of the aqueous humor showed CMV-DNA-positive results. The patient was diagnosed with CMV corneal endotheliitis, and oral ganciclovir was administered. Fifteen months after the initial presentation, BK appeared with decreased vision to 20 cm/n. d. After confirmation of negative CMV-DNA in the aqueous humor, DSAEK was performed following cataract surgery. The postoperative visual acuity recovered to 0.3. Mooren's ulcer exacerbation and CMV corneal endotheliitis did not recur postoperatively.
This is the first report of a case in which a patient with Mooren's ulcer developed BK due to CMV corneal endotheliitis and required DSAEK. Cataract surgery and DSAEK could be performed without issue by creating the main wound and side ports in a manner that avoids the thinned parts of the cornea.
