A pilot microCT evaluation evaluating a mixing tip revealed incomplete mixture between the two resins with porosity introduced from turbulence as the materials are forced through the tip during preparation. CONCLUSIONS A wide range of porosity was identified between the ten materials evaluated. These preliminary results warrant more investigation evaluating additional resin composite core materials, the preparation capabilities of automix tips, and porosity presence in the unmixed materials. © 2020 by the American College of Prosthodontists.AIMS To understand the relationships between physical and chemical parameters of kaolinite and diatomaceous earth, and their capacities to remove bacteria from aqueous media. selleck products To determine the optimal aqueous media parameters for use of these products in water disinfection processes. METHODS AND RESULTS Seven kaolinite and three diatomaceous earth products were evaluated. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus megaterium were used as proxy for bacterial pathogens. Fully calcined kaolin and amorphous diatomaceous earth demonstrated the highest extent and consistency in removing all the bacteria. The removal depended on ionic strength and pH of aqueous media with 100 mmol l-1 pH 5 potassium hydrogen phthalate buffer revealing the highest (2 log per gram) extent of the removal. Al3+ cations enhanced sorption up to 4 log per gram. CONCLUSIONS Calcined kaolin and amorphous diatomaceous earth are excellent sorbents for bacteria. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Fully calcined kaolin and amorphous diatomaceous earth are perspective tools for wastewater and water disinfection against waterborne bacterial pathogens. © 2020 The Society for Applied Microbiology. An unknown intense signal (Pun ) with a mean chemical shift of 5.3 ppm was observed in 31 P MR spectra from the calf muscles of patients with the diabetic foot syndrome. The aim of the study was to identify the origin of this signal and its potential as a biomarker of muscle injury. Calf muscles of 68 diabetic patients (66.3 ± 8.6 years; body mass index = 28.2 ± 4.3 kg/m2 ) and 12 age-matched healthy controls were examined by (dynamic) 31 P MRS (3 T system, 31 P/1 H coil). Phantoms (glucose-1-phosphate, Pi and PCr) were measured at pH values of 7.05 and 7.51. At rest, Pun signals with intensities higher than 50% of the Pi intensity were observed in 10 of the 68 examined diabetic subjects. We tested two hypothetical origins of the Pun signal (1) phosphorus from phosphoesters and (2) phosphorus from extra- and intracellular alkaline phosphate pools. 2,3-diphosphoglycerate and glucose-1-phosphate are the only phosphoesters with signals in the chemical shift region close to 5.3 ppm. Both compounds can be excluded 2,3-diphosphoglycerate due to the missing second signal component at 6.31 ppm; glucose-1-phosphate because its chemical shifts are about 0.2 ppm downfield from the Pi signal (4.9 ppm). If the Pun signal is from phosphate, it represents a pH value of 7.54 ± 0.05. Therefore, it could correspond to signals of Pi in mitochondria. However, patients with critical limb ischemia have rather few mitochondria and so the Pun signal probably originates from interstitia. Our data suggest that the increased Pun signal observed in patients with the diabetic foot syndrome is a biomarker of severe muscular damage. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.Smoke exposure from bushfires, such as those experienced in Australia during 2019-2020, can reach levels up to 10 times those deemed hazardous. Short-term and extended exposure to high levels of air pollution can be associated with adverse health effects, although the most recent fires have brought into sharp focus that several important knowledge gaps remain. In this article, we briefly identify and discuss the existing Australian evidence base and make suggestions for future research. © 2020 Asian Pacific Society of Respirology.Osteoarthritis is the most common articular disease that can lead to chronic pain and severe disability. Curcumin-an effective ingredient in turmeric with anti inflammatory property-plays an important role in protecting the joints against destructive factors. Gingerols and piperine, are the effective ingredients of ginger and black pepper, which may potentially enhance and sustain the effect of curcumin in this direction. To determine the effect of cosupplementation with turmeric extract, black pepper, and ginger on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) in patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis, compared with Naproxen. Sixty patients with two different levels of knee osteoarthritis (Grade 2 and 3) were studied. Individuals were randomly assigned to receive daily turmeric extract, ginger, and black pepper together or Naproxen capsule for 4 weeks. PGE2 was evaluated by ELISA method. 24-hr recall was also assessed. All of participants completed the study. PGE2 decreased significantly in both groups (p less then  .001), but there was no significant differences between groups. The results of this study indicated that intake of the selected herbs twice a day for 4 weeks may improve the PGE2 levels in patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis similar to Naproxen drug. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.PURPOSE This is a single center, retrospective study to assess the prevalence of peri-implant disease and biologic complications in a cohort of partially edentulous subjects in relation to selected prosthetic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Subjects previously treated with one or more implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis (ISFDPs) were recalled for a comprehensive examination. Clinical and radiographic records were taken and questionnaires were administered. The prevalence of implant failure, peri-implant disease and other biologic complications was correlated with selected prosthetic, clinical and patient-related factors using chi-square and multiple regression analyses. RESULTS A convenience sample of 71 subjects with 100 prostheses supported by 222 dental implants was enrolled in the study. The mean follow-up time after prosthesis delivery was 3.3 ± 1.5 years (range of 1 - 9 years). The cumulative implant survival rate was 99.1%. Peri-implantitis was the most frequent major biologic complication (5% of implants), while the most frequent minor biologic complication was peri-implant mucositis (84.
