We aimed to clarify the pathophysiology of epilepsy involving seizures with apparently generalized onset, progressing to focal ictal rhythm through stereotactic EEG (SEEG) implantation, recording, stimulation and high-frequency oscillation (HFO) analysis.

We identified two patients with seizures with bilateral electrographic onset evolving to focal ictal rhythm, who underwent SEEG implantation. Patients had pre-surgical epilepsy work-up, including prolonged video scalp EEG, brain MRI, PET, ictal/interictal SPECT, MEG, and EEG-fMRI prior to SEEG implantation.

Both patients had childhood-onset seizures involving behavioural arrest and left versive head and eye deviation, evolving to bilateral tonic-clonic convulsions. Seizures were electrographically preceded by diffuse, bilateral 3-Hz activity resembling absence seizures. Both had suspected focal lesions based on neuroimaging, including 3T MRI and voxel-based post-processing in one patient. Electrode stimulation did not elicit any habitual electroclinical seizures. HFO analysis showed bilateral focal regions with high fast-ripple rates.

Now, we developed a novel, real-time bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) assay to monitor the GAP activity of ARHGAP25 in vitro. Using this approach, we revealed that phosphorylation of S363 and S488, but not that of S379-380, controls ARHGAP25's RACGAP activity. On the other hand, we found in granulocyte-differentiated human PLB-985 cells that superoxide production and actin depolymerization are regulated by residues S363 and S379-380. The present data demonstrate the value of our BRET-GAP assay and show that different phosphorylation patterns regulate ARHGAP25's GAP activity and its effect on superoxide production and phagocytosis.As the research and treatment of childhood cancer steadily progresses, so has the interest in children's needs, not only throughout such treatment but also following completion. Whilst there is increased literature focussing on the long-term psychosocial impact of treatment completion, little is currently known about how children and young people (CYP) experience the more immediate end of their cancer treatment. The current review seeks to examine CYP's experiences of the end of their cancer treatment. Sixteen studies were retrieved using a systematic search strategy across five databases, all of which used qualitative methodology. Thematic synthesis was chosen to analyse the data. Four overarching themes were generated, which encompassed 'the continuity of cancer', 'ambivalence of needs', 'making sense of the cancer experience' and 'sense of self following the ending'. The end of treatment is a time of complexity for CYP, yet it is currently largely overlooked. In order to scaffold these endings for CYP, increased emphasis and thought needs to be placed on the end of treatment and the support that is provided within it.

High turnover and recruitment challenges of nursing home employees and managers are an ongoing concern. This study's objective was to examine intent to quit among all staff and assess the roles of job characteristics and job satisfaction. Employees and managers within one nursing home chain working in direct patient care or nursing were compared.

Data came from the Work, Family, Health Network 18-month follow-up survey in 2012 (total = 1,000, managers = 101, employees = 899). A cumulative logit model controlling for demographics was estimated for intent to quit. Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory of Work Motivation guided the study.

Employees scored significantly lower on family-supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSBs), schedule control, and decision authority than managers. Employees and managers did not differ on job satisfaction, intent to quit, or job demands. Satisfied workers had an 83% decrease in the odds of reporting an intent to quit compared to workers who were neutral or disagreed (odds ratio [OR] = 0.17, p < .0001). Decision authority (OR = 3.49) and schedule control (OR = 5.18) were independently related to greater odds of reporting an intent to quit. In contrast, FSSBs (OR = 0.69), safety compliance (OR = 0.71), and the combination of high decision authority with high schedule control (OR = 0.72) were related to lower odds of reporting an intent to quit.

In this introduction to Zoo Biology's special issue on Conservation Psychology, we discuss the articles that make up this collection and propose further avenues for research and consideration within the field.

Smartphones generate radio-frequency electromagnetic fields. While short-term exposure in adults was considered quite safe, effects of long-term exposure or exposure during pregnancy on fetuses or during breastfeeding on newborns are not well studied yet. The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and usage characteristics of smartphones among a sample of pregnant women, and promote the correct and conscious use of the smartphone.

In this work, nickel availability for the production and function of E. coli [NiFe]-hydrogenase was explored through immunoblot and activity assays. Whole-cell hydrogenase activities were assayed in high throughput against a small molecule library of known bioactives. Iodoquinol was identified as a potential inhibitor of the nickel biosynthetic pathway of [NiFe]-hydrogenase through a two-step screening process, but further studies with immunoblot assays showed confounding effects dependent on the cell growth phase.
