Secondary forests emerging during traditional shifting cultivation practices are increasingly recognized for their fulfillment of ecosystem services and mitigation potential of climate change and biodiversity losses. The soil seed bank as a recruit reservoir is a limiting factor for natural forest regeneration of such secondary forests and is decisive for the formation and restitution of the post-disturbance community. The aim of this study was to compare the composition of the soil seed bank along a natural regeneration chronosequence from the Caxiuanã National Forest, eastern Amazon, including old-growth reference sites. We sampled standing vegetation, soil properties and soil seed banks and compared the density and species richness of different life forms among different regeneration stages. Using nonmetric, multiple scaling, we compared the composition of the soil seed bank among different regeneration stages and with standing vegetation composition. buy Monomethyl auristatin E Furthermore, we outlined the influence of stand age, veystem services, resilience and stability of secondary forests arising during shifting cultivation practices. The extensive use of fossil fuels and the environmental effect of their combustion products have attracted researchers to look into renewable energy sources. In addition, global mass production of waste has motivated communities to recycle and reuse the waste in a sustainable way to lower landfill waste and associated problems. The development of waste to energy (WtE) technology including the production of bioenergy, e.g. biogas produced from various waste through Anaerobic Digestion (AD), is considered one of the potential measures to achieve the sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN). Therefore, this study reviews the most recent studies from relevant academic literature on WtE technology (particularly AD technology) for biogas production and the application of a solar-assisted biodigester (SAB) system aimed at improving performance. In addition, socio-economic factors, challenges, and perspectives have been reported. From the analysis of different technologies, further work on effective low-cost technologies is recommended, especially using SAB system upgrading and leveraging the opportunities of this system. The study found that the performance of the AD system is affected by a variety of factors and that different approaches can be applied to improve performance. It has also been found that solar energy systems efficiently raise the biogas digester temperature and through this, they maximize the biogas yield under optimum conditions. The study revealed that the solar-assisted AD system produces less pollution and improves performance compared to the conventional AD system.Improving the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) for organic pollutant removal from water and in-depth study of the effect of oxygen doping on its photocatalytic mechanism are deserving of research attention. Oxygen-doped g-C3N4 with a suitable degree of oxidation was prepared by oxidation using concentrated acid-ultrasound double oxidation. Oxygen doping by oxidation changed the physical and chemical properties of g-C3N4, and improved its rhodamine B photocatalytic degradation efficiency. The physical and chemical properties of g-C3N4 were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis, among other methods. The photocatalytic mechanism was also studied in depth using photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, transient photocurrent measurements, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and Mott-Schottky plots. An appropriate degree of oxidation introduced pit-like defects rich in oxygen-containing functional groups onto the g-C3N4 surface, which improves its photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, in the photocatalytic process of oxidized g-C3N4, oxygen doping was confirmed to change the main active substance of g-C3N4 photocatalysis from holes to singlet oxygen. This study provides an in-depth explanation of the photocatalytic mechanism of g-C3N4 doped with oxygen, which provides guidance and reference for the design of photocatalysts for organic pollutant removal from water and the analysis of photocatalytic mechanisms for water treatment.Coping with anthropogenic environmental change is among the greatest challenges faced by wildlife, and endocrine flexibility is a potentially crucial coping mechanism. Animals may adapt to anthropogenic environments by dampening their glucocorticoid stress response, but empirical tests of this hypothesis have provided mixed evidence. An alternative hypothesis is that a non-attenuated stress response and efficient negative feedback are favored in anthropogenic habitats. To test this idea, we non-invasively sampled corticosterone release rates of common toad (Bufo bufo) tadpoles in agricultural, urban, and natural habitats, and quantified their stress response and negative feedback by a standardized stress-and-recovery protocol. We repeated the same sampling with tadpoles raised from eggs from the same ponds in a common-garden experiment to infer if the differences observed between populations in different habitats were due to individual phenotypic plasticity rather than microevolution or transgenerational effense and stronger negative feedback in these habitats supports the importance of rapidly "turning on and off" the stress response as a mechanism for coping with anthropogenic environmental change.Chronic or repeated exposure to environmental contaminants may result in allostatic overload, a physiological situation in which the costs of coping affect long-term survival and reproductive output. Continuous measurements in Otra, the largest river in southern Norway, show the occurrence of repeated 24-48 h episodes of acidification. This work investigates the impact of repeated short acidification episodes on a unique land-locked population of normally anadromous Atlantic salmon ("Bleke"). This was done by recording physiological measures of stress and allostatic load in fish exposed for 7 days to continuous or repeated episodes of simulated environmental acidification or untreated Otra water (controls). A standardized acute stress test was performed after these different exposure regimes, with brain and blood samples taken before (baseline) or after the stress test. Treatment effects on stress coping ability were assessed by neuroendocrine indicators, including telencephalic serotonergic activity and plasma cortisol.
