Compared with current vaccination program, increasing vaccine uptake rates by 50% would decrease the cumulative cases by 4403, within 100 years. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of this strategy was $94,518 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained. Increasing the vaccine uptake rate by 50% can (i) reduce the incidence rates of OPC among both males and females; (ii) improve the quality-adjusted life years for both males and females; (iii) be cost-effective and has the potential to provide tremendous public health benefits in Texas. This review assesses markers of endothelial dysfunction (ED) associated with the maternal syndrome of preeclampsia (PE). We evaluate the role of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected preeclamptic women. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the potential of lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r), dolutegravir (DTG) and remdesivir (RDV) in drug repurposing and their safety in pregnancy complicated by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. In HIV infection, the trans-activator of transcription protein, which has homology with vascular endothelial growth factor, impairs angiogenesis, leading to endothelial injury and possible PE development despite neutralization of their opposing immune states. Markers of ED show strong evidence supporting the adverse role of ART in PE development and mortality compared to treatment-naïve pregnancies. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, exploits angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE 2) to induce ED and hypertension, thereby mimicking angiotensin II-mediated PE in severe cases of infection. Upregulated ACE 2 in pregnancy is a possible risk factor for SARS-CoV-2 infection and subsequent PE development. The potential effectiveness of LPV/r against COVID-19 is inconclusive; however, defective decidualization, along with elevated markers of ED, was observed. Therefore, the safety of these drugs in HIV-positive pregnancies complicated by COVID-19 requires attention. Despite the observed endothelial protective properties of DTG, there is a lack of evidence of its effects on pregnancy and COVID-19 therapeutics. Understanding RDV-ART interactions and the inclusion of pregnant women in antiviral drug repurposing trials is essential. This review provides a platform for further research on PE in the HIV-COVID-19 syndemic.Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Various therapeutic failed in the effective treatment of the lung cancer due to their limited accumulation and exposure in tumors. In order to promote the chemotherapeutics delivery to lung tumor, we introduced chitosan oligosaccharide (CSO) modification on the liposomes. CSO conjugated Pluronic P123 polymers with different CSO grafting amounts, called as CP50 and CP20, were synthesized and used to prepare CSO modified liposomes (CP50-LSs and CP20-LSs). CP50-LSs and CP20-LSs displayed significantly enhanced cellular uptake in A549 cells in vitro as well as superior tumor accumulation in vivo compared with non-CSO modified liposomes (P-LSs). This phenomenon was related to the increased affinity between CSO modified liposomes and tumor cells following massive adsorption of collagen, which was highly expressed in lung tumors. In the A549 tumor-bearing mouse model, intravenous injection of paclitaxel (PTX)-loaded CP50-LSs every 3 days for 21 days resulted in optimal antitumor therapeutic performance with an inhibition rate of 86.4%. These results reveal that CSO modification provides promising applicability for nanomedicine design in the lung cancer treatment. The immune system has crucial roles in cancer development and treatment. Whereas adaptive immunity can prevent or constrain cancer through immunosurveillance, innate immunity and inflammation often promote tumorigenesis and malignant progression of nascent cancer. The past decade has witnessed the translation of knowledge derived from preclinical studies of antitumour immunity into clinically effective, approved immunotherapies for cancer. By contrast, the successful implementation of treatments that target cancer-associated inflammation is still awaited. Anti-inflammatory agents have the potential to not only prevent or delay cancer onset but also to improve the efficacy of conventional therapeutics and next-generation immunotherapies. Herein, we review the current clinical advances and experimental findings supporting the utility of an anti-inflammatory approach to the treatment of solid malignancies. Gaining a better mechanistic understanding of the mode of action of anti-inflammatory agents and designing more effective treatment combinations would advance the clinical application of this therapeutic approach. The increased resistance/tolerance of Candida infections to antimicrobial treatment can be attributed to biofilm-associated cells. A way to overcome this situation is to re-purpose non-anti-fungal drugs that could be active against fungi. We have explored the potential of a small library of eighteen non-antifungal drugs used in different human diseases. Candida albicans was cultured in the presence and absence of different concentrations of these drugs. Subsequently, inhibition of growth, germ tube formation, adhesion, and biofilm development were studied. Out of eighteen drug molecules, six showed a reduction in planktonic and biofilm growth in a dose-dependent manner and three drugs inhibited germ tube formation. This study shows the potential of non-antifungal drugs for the development of new anti-Candida agents. In our screening program for new biologically active compounds, a new polyene macrolide, lavencidin (1), along with known compound RKGS-A2215A (2), was isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces lavendulae FRI-5 by changing the composition of liquid medium normally used for the strain. selleck chemicals llc Their structures were elucidated by spectral methods (high-resolution fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry (HRFABMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)). Compound 1 includes a conjugated pentaene moiety together with six hydroxy groups and a carboxylic acid as a side chain. Lavencidin (1) showed moderate growth-inhibitory activity against yeast and was cytotoxic against human cancer cell lines with low-micromolar IC50 values.
