Several instruments are available for the assessment of critical thinking (CTh), but most are, however, unsuitable for use in large surveys with many constructs, due to length or single-person administration formats. One brief and much-used scale is the CTh scale in the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), used in this study. To ensure unbiased comparisons across countries and courses, our secondary aim was to investigate the content validity, as well as the psychometric properties, of the CTh scale to ensure the most accurate and unbiased comparison. For this purpose, Rasch and graphical loglinear Rasch models were used. After reducing the number of items due to content validity issues, the CTh scale fitted Rasch models within each national sample, and was measurement invariant relative to age group, gender, course and university. In the cross-cultural item analysis, two items functioned differentially relative to nationality, and the scale fitted a graphical loglinear Rasch model. This case-control study included 20 psoriasis patients and 20 healthy controls. Patients took narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) for 36 sessions. Our findings revealed a statistically significant difference (P  less then  .001) between psoriasis patients (either before or after treatment) and controls with lower levels of RvD1 in psoriasis patients. On comparing the RvD1 levels in psoriasis patients before and after treatment, a statistically significant increase was detected after treatment (P  less then  .001). Tissue RvD1 levels in psoriasis patients were lower than healthy controls and increased after NB-UVB treatment in psoriasis patients. Thus, it is suggested that RvD1 might have a role in the etiopathogenesis of psoriasis. Moreover, the significantly up-regulated tissue levels of RvD1 in patients after treatment with NB-UVB highlighted a novel mechanism of phototherapy-mediated response in psoriasis by up-regulating RvD1 level.Global demands for energy-efficient heating and cooling systems coupled with rising commitments toward net zero emissions is resulting in wide deployment of shallow geothermal systems, typically installed to a depth of 100 to 200 m, and in the continued growth of the global ground source heat pump (GSHP) market. Ground coupled heat pump (GCHP) systems take up to 85% of the global GSHP market. With increasing deployment of GCHP systems in urban areas coping with limited regulations, there is growing potential and risk for these systems to impact the subsurface thermal regime and to interact with each other or with nearby heat-sensitive subsurface infrastructure. In this paper, we present three numerical modeling case studies, from the UK and Canada, which examine GCHP systems' response to perturbation of the wider hydrogeological and thermal regimes. The studies demonstrate how GCHP systems can be impacted by external influences and perturbations arising from subsurface activities that change the thermal and hydraulic regimes in the area surrounding these systems. Additional subsurface heat loads near existing schemes are found to have varied impacts on system efficiency with reduction ranging from less then 1% to 8%, while changes in groundwater flow rates (due to a nearby groundwater abstraction) reduced the effective thermal conductivity at the study site by 13%. The findings support the argument in favor of regulation of GCHP systems or, to a minimum, their registration with records of locations and approximate heat pump capacity-even though these systems do not abstract/inject groundwater.Urban-driven evolution is widely evident, but whether these changes confer fitness benefits and thus represent adaptive urban evolution is less clear. We performed a multiyear field reciprocal transplant experiment of acorn-dwelling ants across urban and rural environments. Fitness responses were consistent with local adaptation we found a survival advantage of the "home" and "local" treatments compared to "away" and "foreign" treatments. Seasonal bias in survival was consistent with evolutionary patterns of gains and losses in thermal tolerance traits across the urbanization gradient. Rural ants in the urban environment were more vulnerable in the summer, putatively due to low heat tolerance, and urban ants in the rural environment were more vulnerable in winter, putatively due to an evolved loss of cold tolerance. The results for fitness via fecundity were also generally consistent with local adaptation, if somewhat more complex. Urban-origin ants produced more alates in their home versus away environment, and rural-origin ants had a local advantage in the rural environment. Overall, the magnitude of local adaptation was lower for urban ants in the novel urban environment compared with rural ants adapted to the ancestral rural environment, adding further evidence that species might not keep pace with anthropogenic change.

The direct effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on patients with intestinal failure (IF) has not been described.

We conducted a nationwide study of UK IF centers to evaluate the infection rates, presentations, and outcomes in patients with types 2 and 3 IF.

A total of 45 patients with IF contracted COVID-19 between March and August 2020; this included 26 of 2191 (1.2%) home parenteral nutrition (HPN)-dependent adults and 19 of 298 (6.4%) adults hospitalized with type 2 IF. The proportion of patients receiving nursing care for HPN administration was higher in those with community-acquired COVID-19 (66.7%) than the proportion in the entire HPN cohort (26.1%; P < .01). Two HPN-dependent and 1 hospitalized patient with type 2 IF died as a direct consequence of the virus (6.7% of 45 patients with types 2 or 3 infected).

The oldest birth cohort eligible for the vaccination program was born in 1994 and uptake is on average 63%. To evaluate the impact of the HPV vaccine in BC, ecological trends in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) rates were assessed in young women before and after the implementation of the HPV vaccination program. Information on all Pap smears and histopathological abnormalities, in calendar years 2004-2017 in women 16-28 years of age in BC were obtained from the population-based BC Cancer Cervix Screening Program database. Rates of CIN 2 and 3 were calculated as the number of cases divided by the number of cytology specimens for that period. Rate ratios (RR) were calculated by negative binomial piecewise regression. Age-centered incidence rates of CIN 2 and 3 in BC declined significantly among women 16-23 years of age after HPV vaccine introduction compared to before vaccine introduction. The overall reduction postvaccination for CIN2 and 3 in women 16-23 years was respectively 62% (95% CI 54-68%) and 65% (95% CI 58-71%). Age-specific rates for CIN2 significantly declined for those 18-22 years of age and for those 19, 20 and 23 years of age for CIN3. Among women 24-28 years of age no decline in CIN2 and 3 rate over time was observed. The observed reduction in CIN 2 and 3 rates since the introduction of the school-based HPV vaccine program might illustrate the population impact of the BC provincial school-based HPV vaccination program.A 52-year-old male was admitted with unstable angina and three-vessel coronary artery disease. Electrocardiography (ECG) changes consistent with type-1 Brugada ECG pattern were noted during admission. The patient was asymptomatic for syncope and had no family history of sudden cardiac death, ICD implantation, and Brugada syndrome. After coronary by-pass graft the Brugada ECG pattern resolved, and ajmaline test did not elicit type-1 ECG pattern, confirming the suspicion of Brugada phenocopy.
