The molecular basis of the interaction of Sorcin with RyR2 and RyR3 is demonstrated by SPR. Sorcin also interacts with other ER proteins as SERCA2 and Sigma-1 receptor in a calcium-dependent fashion. We also show that Sorcin regulates ER calcium transients Sorcin increases the velocity of ER calcium uptake (increasing SERCA activity). The data presented here demonstrate that Sorcin may represent both a novel early marker of neurodegenerative diseases and a response to cellular stress dependent on neurodegeneration.Winter Eurasian cooling after the mid-1990s has been verified by numerous studies, although in recent decades, the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere have been rapidly warming globally. Because the cooling is not uniform at different spatial and temporal scales, over time, this change may not truly reflect the nature of climate fluctuations. Here, by using three types of data (reanalysis, weather station, and remote sensing image data) to assess variations in Eurasian seasonal cooling, we examine the causes of these changes. During a 30-year climatology (1989-2018), we show that a significant (P  less then  0.05) abrupt change in the autumn Eurasian air temperature trend occurred in 2003. Our results suggest that from 2004-2018, the autumn Eurasian temperature reveals a significant cooling trend (P  less then  0.05). We demonstrate that the autumn cooling in Eurasia is likely influenced by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Siberian high (SH). Since 2004, the strengthening of the PDO and SH explains approximately 54% and 18% of the autumn cooling in Eurasia, respectively. We also find that the cooling in autumn is stronger than that in winter.Phonon trapping has an immense impact in many areas of science and technology, from the antennas of interferometric gravitational wave detectors to chip-scale quantum micro- and nano-mechanical oscillators. It usually relies on the mechanical suspension-an approach, while isolating selected vibrational modes, leads to serious drawbacks for interrogation of the trapped phonons, including limited heat capacity and excess noises via measurements. To circumvent these constraints, we realize a paradigm of phonon trapping using mechanical bound states in the continuum (BICs) with topological features and conducted an in-depth characterization of the mechanical losses both at room and cryogenic temperatures. Our findings of mechanical BICs combining the microwave frequency and macroscopic size unveil a unique platform for realizing mechanical oscillators in both classical and quantum regimes. The paradigm of mechanical BICs might lead to unprecedented sensing modalities for applications such as rare-event searches and the exploration of the foundations of quantum mechanics in unreached parameter spaces.A solid with larger sound speeds usually exhibits higher lattice thermal conductivity. Here, we report an exception that CuP2 has a quite large mean sound speed of 4155 m s-1, comparable to GaAs, but single crystals show very low lattice thermal conductivity of about 4 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature, one order of magnitude smaller than GaAs. To understand such a puzzling thermal transport behavior, we have thoroughly investigated the atomic structures and lattice dynamics by combining neutron scattering techniques with first-principles simulations. This compound crystallizes in a layered structure where Cu atoms forming dimers are sandwiched in between P atomic networks. In this work, we reveal that Cu atomic dimers vibrate as a rattling mode with frequency around 11 meV, which is manifested to be remarkably anharmonic and strongly scatters acoustic phonons to achieve the low lattice thermal conductivity. In grasses, phased small interfering RNAs (phasiRNAs), 21- or 24-nucleotide (nt) in length, are predominantly expressed in anthers and play a role in regulating male fertility. However, their targets and mode of action on the targets remain unknown. Here we profile phasiRNA expression in premeiotic and meiotic spikelets as well as in purified male meiocytes at early prophase I, tetrads and microspores in rice. We show that 21-nt phasiRNAs are most abundant in meiocytes at early prophase I while 24-nt phasiRNAs are more abundant in tetrads and microspores. By performing highly sensitive degradome sequencing, we find that 21-nt phasiRNAs direct target mRNA cleavage in male germ cells, especially in meiocytes at early prophase I. These targets include 435 protein-coding genes and 71 transposons that show an enrichment for carbohydrate biosynthetic and metabolic pathways. Our study provides strong evidence that 21-nt phasiRNAs act in a target-cleavage mode and may facilitate the progression of meiosis by fine-tuning carbohydrate biosynthesis and metabolism in male germ cells.Variation in the human gut microbiome can reflect host lifestyle and behaviors and influence disease biomarker levels in the blood. this website Understanding the relationships between gut microbes and host phenotypes are critical for understanding wellness and disease. Here, we examine associations between the gut microbiota and ~150 host phenotypic features across ~3,400 individuals. We identify major axes of taxonomic variance in the gut and a putative diversity maximum along the Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes axis. Our analyses reveal both known and unknown associations between microbiome composition and host clinical markers and lifestyle factors, including host-microbe associations that are composition-specific. These results suggest potential opportunities for targeted interventions that alter the composition of the microbiome to improve host health. By uncovering the interrelationships between host diet and lifestyle factors, clinical blood markers, and the human gut microbiome at the population-scale, our results serve as a roadmap for future studies on host-microbe interactions and interventions. The fatigue performance of high strength aluminum alloys used in planes, trains, trucks and automobiles is notoriously poor. Engineers must design around this important limitation to use Al alloys for light-weighting of transportation structures. An alternative concept for microstructure design for improved fatigue strength is demonstrated in this work. Microstructures are designed to exploit the mechanical energy imparted during the initial cycles of fatigue to dynamically heal the inherent weak points in the microstructure. The fatigue life of the highest strength Aluminum alloys is improved by 25x, and the fatigue strength is raised to ~1/2 the tensile strength. The approach embraces the difference between static and dynamic loading and represents a conceptual change in microstructural design for fatigue.
